Bruins vs Kings Prediction, Picks & Odds (Oct 17, 2026)
By SportsHub Model · Edited by Kyle Parker
The 20-second version
- Pick: Bruins moneyline at +125. The model gives Boston 60%, while the licensed price implies about 44% to 47%.
- LA goalies Kuemper (.847) and Forsberg (.853) are both well under .900. Swayman is at .930.
- Boston is on the second night of a back-to-back after a 10 p.m. ET game in Anaheim, and its starter isn't confirmed.
- The Kings have 11 goals in five games (31st) and a 57.9% penalty kill.

The Boston Bruins (5-2-0 entering Friday) visit the winless Los Angeles Kings (0-3-2) on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 9:00 p.m. ET, on NESN and ABTV. The Kings are favored at -133 to -149, with Boston +112 to +125. The hook: LA has scored 11 goals in five games and gets a rested team against a Bruins club on the second night of a back-to-back. Our model still likes Boston: Pick: Bruins moneyline (+125).
How these teams got here
Boston has been one of the East's early surprises under Marco Sturm. The Bruins have won three straight by a combined 17-5, the last a 6-3 win in San Jose on Tuesday that opened a four-game road trip. Through seven games they've scored 26 goals and allowed 16, a +10 differential. Sturm wasn't thrilled with that San Jose game, saying it was "not our best game" after Boston was outshot 38-26, so the process hasn't been as clean as the scoreboard.
Los Angeles is the opposite story. The Kings are tied for the NHL's worst record, with losses to Colorado (8-4), Florida (2-1) and Edmonton (4-1) plus overtime defeats to San Jose and Vegas. They've scored 2.2 goals per game and allowed 4.2. Three of the five losses were by one goal, so there's some bad luck in there, but a team that has scored more than one goal just twice can't lean on luck as an explanation.
The schedule is the wrinkle. Boston plays Friday at 10 p.m. ET in Anaheim, then flies up the freeway for this one less than 24 hours later. The Kings haven't played since Tuesday's loss to Edmonton.
The goaltending gap
This is where the game tilts. Jeremy Swayman has been excellent for Boston: 5-1-0 with a .930 save percentage and a 1.99 GAA. Swayman was the projected starter Friday in Anaheim, which makes him unlikely to go again Saturday. Boston hasn't announced a starter; Michael DiPietro was listed as the backup.
Even with a backup in net, the Bruins are on the right side of the crease matchup. Darcy Kuemper is 0-3-1 with an .847 save percentage and a 4.53 GAA, and Anton Forsberg sits at .853 in two appearances. Both are well below .900. For LA to win, it needs one of them to steal a game, and nothing in five starts says that's coming.
Up front, Boston has depth: Fraser Minten leads the team with 4 goals and 3 assists in seven games, and Charlie McAvoy scored in his first game back from a suspension that cost him the first six. Artemi Panarin (3-1-4) is the only Kings skater with more than one goal, and Brandt Clarke (1-3-4) is the only other player with four points.
Kings missing the second-line punch
Los Angeles has Kevin Fiala (lower leg) and Mats Zuccarello on injured reserve, and Alex Turcotte is also on IR. Fiala is still working back from the leg injury he suffered at the Winter Olympics, which needed two surgeries, and the club hoped for a return around the start of November. Losing two wingers who drive a second line is a big reason the Kings rank 31st in goals scored.
Special teams compound it. The LA power play is converting 15.8% (22nd), and the penalty kill has been brutal at 57.9%, second-lowest in the league. Boston's units aren't great either, with a 16.7% power play and a 76.0% penalty kill, but the Bruins don't need to be great on special teams against a kill that leaks like that. Boston has no injuries listed beyond McAvoy's return.
How the line has moved
Money has come in on the home side. Earlier Friday, the licensed books had the Kings between -133 and -143. Now they're as high as -149, and the best Bruins price has drifted from +120 to +125. That's a home-favorite price for a team without a win, which tells you the market is weighing the back-to-back heavily, and probably the backup goalie too. The total sits at 5.5, with the over priced at -125 to -132.
Prediction: Bruins moneyline (+125)
The SportsHub model gives Boston a 60% chance to win. The licensed moneyline implies roughly 44% to 47%. The move toward LA makes the gap wider, and it's too wide to ignore, even after adjusting for the travel.
- Goaltending. Both LA goalies are under .855. Boston's backup doesn't have to be Swayman, just better than that.
- Scoring. Boston has averaged 3.71 goals per game, while LA has averaged 2.2 and ranks 31st.
- Special teams. The Kings' 57.9% penalty kill hands Boston free chances with every LA minor.
- Form. The Bruins have won three straight by a combined 17-5. The Kings are still looking for their first win.
Swing factor: fatigue. If the Friday game in Anaheim goes long or turns physical, Boston's legs in the third period are the Kings' best path. A confirmed Bruins starter Saturday morning matters, too.
On the total, LA's goaltending argues for goals, but its offense argues against them. We see no edge at 5.5 and stick with the side.
