By SportsHub Model · Edited by Kyle Parker
The 20-second version
- No edge: the model leans Charlotte at low confidence, and its 14% draw chance sits well under the market's roughly 23%.
- Charlotte (47 points, 5th in the East) clinches a fourth straight playoff berth with a win or a draw.
- Portland (34 points, 11th in the West) is winless in seven (0-4-3) and five points behind ninth-place Colorado.
- The Timbers are missing four defenders; they have allowed 56 goals, 1.87 per game.

The Portland Timbers (34 points, 11th in the West) host Charlotte FC (47 points, 5th in the East) at Providence Park on Saturday at 10:30 p.m. ET on Apple TV. The market makes it close to a coin flip: Portland sits between -105 and +102 on the three-way moneyline, Charlotte +205 to +220, the draw +295 to +320. Charlotte can clinch a playoff spot with one point; Portland hasn't won in seven. Our call: no edge.
How these teams got here
Portland is running out of runway. The Timbers are five points behind ninth-place Colorado with four games left, and they haven't won since a 5-4 shootout at Minnesota on Sept. 5. That's 0-4-3 in seven, including home losses to Dallas (1-2), San Jose (1-3) and the LA Galaxy (0-2). Last week's 0-0 draw at Colorado was only the second clean sheet of the season for James Pantemis.
Charlotte arrives in a far better spot. The Crown sit one point behind fourth-place Chicago and one ahead of Philadelphia. Their last outing was a 2-2 draw at Philadelphia on Oct. 17, with Rodolfo Aloko and Idan Toklomati scoring. A week before that, Toklomati scored twice, the winner in stoppage time, to beat Dallas 3-2. This is the last of three straight road games.
The stakes are lopsided. A Charlotte win or draw clinches a fourth straight playoff berth, and the Crown could have it wrapped up before kickoff if Columbus draws Toronto or Red Bull New York fails to beat Inter Miami earlier Saturday. Portland needs three points no matter what.
Toklomati against a patched-up back line
Charlotte has the hottest finisher on the field. Toklomati has 13 goals, a club single-season MLS record, and he's the focal point of an attack averaging 1.77 goals per game.
Portland can score too: 51 goals, 13th in MLS. Kristoffer Velde leads with 17 goal contributions (8 goals, 9 assists), David Da Costa has 5 goals and 9 assists, and Ariel Lassiter has 5 goals. The problem is at the other end. The Timbers have allowed 56 goals (1.87 per game), a career high for Pantemis, who has started every match. Charlotte allows 1.50 per game, with Kristijan Kahlina in goal.
Injuries hit Portland's defense hardest
The Timbers are down four defenders: Brandon Bye, Zac McGraw, Juan Mosquera and Alex Bonetig are all out. That leaves a projected back four of Jimer Fory, Kamal Miller, Waterman and Ronald Hernández to deal with Toklomati. Forward Antony and backup keeper Hunter Sulte are questionable, and Portland hasn't scored in its last two games.
Charlotte's absences are mostly depth: Archie Goodwin, Brandt Bronico, Aron John and Nimfasha Berchimas are out, with Doucouré and Liel Abada questionable. The projected spine of Tim Ream, Henry Kessler, Westwood, Diani and Pep Biel is intact.
Prediction: no edge
Our model makes Charlotte a 55% favorite, Portland 31% and the draw 14%, but at low confidence. Stripping the vig from the licensed books gives roughly Portland 46%, Charlotte 30%, draw 23%. That gap looks like an edge on Charlotte, but we don't headline low-confidence calls, and here's why we don't trust this one:
- The model underprices the draw. Portland has drawn 7 of 30 and Charlotte 8 of 30. A 14% draw doesn't fit two teams that split points a quarter of the time.
- Motivation cuts toward Portland. The Timbers need three points; Charlotte needs one and may have clinched before kickoff.
- The defensive numbers favor Charlotte. A 0.37 goals-per-game gap in goals allowed and four missing Portland defenders are real.
- Form backs Charlotte, home field backs Portland. It's 0-4-3 for the Timbers against a Charlotte side on its third straight road trip.
The swing factor is the early games: if Charlotte has clinched by 10:30 p.m., expect some rotation.
On the total, 3.5 is shaded to the over (-120 to -127). Portland games average 3.57 goals and Charlotte games 3.27, so the number is fair, and we pass there too.
