No edge: we're passing

Inter are the right favorite, but at around -295 the price already bakes in their edge. The model's 80% rests on a 5% draw chance that isn't realistic for a Serie A match, so we see no value on any side.

Inter vs Fiorentina prediction, picks and odds card for Serie A Matchday 8

Inter Milan (6-1-0, 19 points) host Fiorentina (1-1-5, 4 points) at San Siro on Sunday at 7:30 a.m. ET on CBS Sports Network and Paramount+. It's first against 18th, and the market prices it that way: Inter sit around -295 on the three-way moneyline, the draw near +425 and the Viola at +600. The tension is a short-handed Inter attack against a defense that has leaked 17 goals. SportsHub's call: no edge.

How these teams got here

Inter's only dropped points came in a 2-2 draw at Roma. Since then they have won six straight league games, the latest a 3-1 comeback at Bologna on Oct. 17. Seven matches in, the defending champions have scored 21 goals, conceded 9 and sit top of the table on 19 points.

Europe has been bumpier. Inter lost 4-3 to Club Brugge on Oct. 13, then ground out a 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday, their first Champions League win of the season, finishing the match with ten men per Cult of Calcio. That's a short turnaround to a Sunday lunchtime kickoff in Milan.

Fiorentina are heading the other way. Paolo Vanoli's side has one league win in seven, at Venezia, and has lost back-to-back league games: 2-1 at Genoa and 3-1 at home to Como on Oct. 18. The Viola sit 18th, level on points with 17th-placed Genoa, with 8 goals scored and 17 conceded. They haven't played since Como, so they arrive with a full week of rest.

Inter's attack against a back line that keeps breaking

This is the game in one line: the league's top side averages 3.0 goals per league game, and its opponent concedes 2.4.

Inter don't lean on one scorer. Marcus Thuram has 4 league goals, Hakan Çalhanoğlu has 3 from midfield, and Pio Esposito, Ange-Yoan Bonny and wing-back Carlos Augusto have 2 apiece. That spread matters this week, because the captain is out. Cult of Calcio notes Inter have won all four home league games this season, 15-6 on aggregate, and have scored three or more in six of their last eight home league matches.

Fiorentina's goals run through Franco Mastantuono (3) and Mateo Pellegrino (2). SB Nation's preview points out that the Viola have finished below their expected goals and will have to track Inter's midfield runners, Barella and the wing-backs, to keep this close. On the road against a side that scores this freely, that's a lot to ask.

Who's missing, and why it matters

Inter will be without Lautaro Martínez, who has 4 league goals in 5 appearances. Benjamin Pavard and Curtis Jones are also out. Most previews list John Stones as out too, while SB Nation has him questionable, and Cult of Calcio reports Luis Henrique strained a muscle against Shakhtar. DAZN expects Djed Spence to get his first league start. Add the midweek game with ten men, and some rotation is likely, which dulls the edge of Inter's attack a little.

Fiorentina's problems are at the back. Fabiano Parisi is out, and Luca Ranieri (foot) and Arthur Atta are questionable. Cult of Calcio also lists Riccardo Sottil as out. Losing Ranieri would thin a defense that is already conceding nearly two and a half goals a game.

Prediction: no edge

No edge. Inter should win, but the price already says so.

  • The gap is real. Inter have 19 points to Fiorentina's 4, a +12 goal difference to -9, and a perfect home league record.
  • The price takes it away. At -295, Inter's implied chance is about 75%, or roughly 69% once the hold is spread across the three outcomes. The model says 80%, but it gives the draw only 5%, while the market prices it near 19%. A draw that unlikely isn't credible in Serie A, so the gap between the model and the market is an artifact.
  • Inter's legs are a question. Inter played a Champions League game on Wednesday with ten men, they are without Lautaro, and Fiorentina are rested. That's enough to keep this closer than the -295 implies.
  • Fiorentina's injuries cut the other way. If Ranieri sits, Inter's runners will find space.

Swing factor: an early Inter goal. Fiorentina have shown little in seven matches to suggest they can chase one at San Siro.

On the total: the main line is 3.5, with the over around +100 and the under near -130. Inter's 3.0 goals per game and Fiorentina's 2.4 conceded point toward goals, but rotation and a short week argue against a rout. It's a reasonable lean to the over, not a play.
