By SportsHub Model · Edited by Kyle Parker
The 20-second version
- No edge: our model's projection for Georgia vs Auburn doesn't line up with the market, so we're passing on a headline pick.
- No. 1 Georgia (6-0) is laying 19 to 20.5 points at home after beating Alabama 20-17 last week.
- Auburn QB Byrum Brown has been sacked 18 times in five games; Georgia has 17 sacks in six.
- Auburn is without LB Xavier Atkins; Georgia's KJ Bolden is doubtful and RB Chauncey Bowens is out.

No. 1 Georgia (6-0, 4-0 SEC) hosts Auburn (3-2, 1-2 SEC) at Sanford Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The Bulldogs are laying 19 to 20.5 points with the total at 49.5, and the hook is simple: can Byrum Brown, already the most-sacked quarterback in the country, survive a pass rush that just helped beat Alabama? Our model's read on this game doesn't hold up against the market, so SportsHub has no edge on Georgia vs Auburn.
How these teams got here
Georgia has done nothing but win. The Bulldogs are 6-0, scoring 46.2 points per game and allowing 14.0, a +193 point differential. Last week's 20-17 win over Alabama was their best result of the season and pushed them to No. 1 in the AP poll. They also start fast: Georgia has outscored opponents 164-40 in the first quarter, per DawgNation. Against the number, Georgia is 5-1 this season and the over is 5-1 in its games, per SI.
Auburn arrives off its only bye week. The Tigers are 3-2 under first-year coach Alex Golesh, averaging 26.8 points and allowing 21.4. Their last outing was a 24-14 loss at Tennessee on Oct. 3, a game in which they opened with four straight three-and-outs and didn't pick up a first down until their fifth possession. Auburn is still looking for its first ranked win under Golesh, and history in Athens isn't kind: the Tigers haven't won there since 2005, and Kirby Smart is 10-1 against them, per the AJC.
Last year's meeting at Auburn was closer than the scoreboard suggests. Georgia won 20-10, and the turning point was a goal-line fumble forced by linebackers CJ Allen and Raylen Wilson.
Georgia's pass rush vs. Byrum Brown
This is the matchup that decides how big the margin gets. Georgia has 17 sacks in six games, fourth in the SEC. Brown has been sacked 18 times in five games, the most in the country, including four times at Tennessee.
Brown is still the reason Auburn can hang around. He averages 68.8 rushing yards per game, ran for 107 yards at Tennessee, and has accounted for 105 career rushing and passing touchdowns, eight more than any other active FBS player. If Auburn keeps him on schedule with designed runs and quick throws, it can shorten the game. If it falls into third-and-long, Georgia's front has feasted on that all year.
On the other side, Gunner Stockton has been as efficient as any quarterback in the league: 76.6% completions, 1,298 yards, 14 touchdowns and 2 interceptions through six games. Golesh called him a veteran who moves the ball and avoids mistakes. Georgia's run game has been patched together, with Dwight Phillips Jr. leading the team at 255 yards after a career game against Alabama.
One caution for anyone assuming a blowout: Georgia's defense ranks 52nd in opponent-adjusted EPA per play and 20th in opponent success rate, per SI. Good, not suffocating.
Who's missing
Georgia's injury list is long. RB Chauncey Bowens, the team leader with six rushing touchdowns, is out after Lisfranc surgery. WRs Isiah Canion and Thomas Blackshear, EDGE Amaris Williams (torn ACL) and S Tyriq Green are also out. Safety KJ Bolden was downgraded to doubtful on Thursday's report. The good news for Georgia: RB Nate Frazier, who missed four straight games with a rib injury, is not on the report, and OL Marcus Harrison was removed from it.
Auburn will be without LB Xavier Atkins, a preseason All-American who is tied for the team lead with 3 sacks and second with 37 tackles. TE Hunter Herring and OL Tai Buster are also out. That puts more on LB Elijah Melendez, who leads Auburn with 38 tackles and also has 3 sacks.
Prediction: No edge
- The price already says blowout. A moneyline of -1429 to -2000 implies Georgia wins about 93-95% of the time. Our model's output for this game points the other way from the market and the matchup data, so we're not putting a side on it.
- Twenty points is a lot in this rivalry. Georgia is 7-3 against the spread in the last 10 meetings, per SI, but last year's 20-10 result wouldn't have covered this number.
- The sack battle cuts one way. Georgia's 17 sacks against Auburn's 18 allowed is the clearest edge on the board, and it favors the Bulldogs winning, not necessarily by 20.
- Auburn's defense is thinner without Atkins. Losing a 3-sack linebacker against an offense putting up 46.2 a game hurts.
Swing factor: Auburn's protection. If Brown gets sacked four or more times again, this could be decided by halftime. If he turns those plays into scrambles, the Tigers can stay inside the number.
On the total: 49.5 sits between Georgia's 5-1 over record this season and a series in which the under is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings, per SI. Those pull in opposite directions, so there's no total play here either.
