By SportsHub Model · Edited by Kyle Parker
The 20-second version
- No edge: our model has App State at 52% (very low confidence), and the moneyline already makes the Mountaineers a slight favorite.
- App State QB Malachi Singleton (ankle) is questionable; Henry Hasselbeck would start if he sits.
- Coastal leads the Sun Belt with 13 takeaways and has won the last four meetings.
- The total has dropped from about 52 at open to 48.5-49.5.

Appalachian State (3-2) visits Coastal Carolina (2-4) on Friday at 8 p.m. ET at Brooks Stadium in Conway, South Carolina, on ESPN2. Licensed books have App State as a 1- to 1.5-point favorite, with the moneyline around -115 to -120 and the total down to 48.5-49.5 from an opener near 52. The hook: App State quarterback Malachi Singleton is questionable with an ankle injury, and Coastal has won four straight in this series. SportsHub's call: no edge.
How these teams got here
App State started 3-0, beating Maine 55-3, East Carolina 27-24 and Charlotte 26-21. Then the wheels came off: a 41-31 loss to NC State and a 10-3 home loss to Old Dominion in the rain, a game in which Singleton went 5-for-23 for 72 yards and hurt his ankle on the final drive. The Mountaineers are 0-1 in the Sun Belt but still carry the better season numbers: 28.4 points scored and 19.8 allowed per game.
Coastal is 2-4 overall, 1-1 in league play, and just snapped a three-game skid with a 27-21 win at Marshall. The Chanticleers led that game 27-0 and forced six turnovers. Before that came losses to Liberty, Delaware and, at home, 31-24 to Georgia Southern. They score 25.2 and allow 24.3 per game.
Coastal's takeaways vs. App State's ball security
This is where the game tilts. Coastal leads the Sun Belt with 13 takeaways, and App State coach Dowell Loggains singled out corner Travis Roman and Coastal's pass rush as problems on tape. App State's defense leads the conference with 8 interceptions, and edge rusher Caleb Sandstrom has 5 sacks.
Offensively, Coastal runs through quarterback Deuce Bailey, who leads the Sun Belt with 13 touchdown passes (1,340 yards, 3 interceptions) and is a threat with his legs. Running back Dominic Lee-Knicely has 362 rushing yards, including 169 and a 70-yard score at Marshall, and Clayton Coppock Jr. has 231 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns.
App State's passing game is the stronger unit on paper at 268.6 yards per game, with Sam Pickett III (16 catches, 257 yards) the top target. But Coastal's defense is leaky against the run, giving up 189.7 rushing yards per game, and App State runs for only 134.4. If the Mountaineers can't lean on the ground game, the pressure lands on whoever plays quarterback.
The Singleton question
Everything hinges on Malachi Singleton. Before his ankle injury he had completed 101 of 155 passes for 1,278 yards, 7 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He was listed questionable early in the week, and Loggains has kept it that way until game time. If he can't go, Henry Hasselbeck is expected to start.
Against a defense built on turnovers, a backup quarterback, or a hobbled starter, is a real worry. That's the biggest reason the market has stayed close to a pick'em even though App State has the better point differential (+43 to Coastal's +5).
How the line has moved
The spread barely moved, from App State -1 to -1.5, and the moneyline has held near its opener. The total is the story: it opened around 52 and has dropped to 48.5-49.5. That's the market pricing in a less explosive App State offense if Singleton is limited. The over has hit in only 2 of App State's 5 games; Coastal is 3-3.
Prediction: No edge on App State-Coastal Carolina
There is no edge here, and this is why:
- The model sees a coin flip. App State wins 52% of the time in our model, at very low confidence, and a -115 to -120 moneyline already implies about 53-55%.
- The numbers split. App State has the better scoring margin (28.4 vs. 19.8), but Coastal has the takeaways (13) and has won the last four meetings, including 45-37 in Boone last October.
- The quarterback status is unresolved. A healthy Singleton tilts this toward App State; Hasselbeck tilts it back.
- Home field matters in a near pick'em. Coastal plays in Conway, where the spread already sits under a field goal.
Swing factor: turnovers. Coastal forced six at Marshall; App State's defense has eight interceptions. Whoever wins that battle likely wins the game.
On the total: the 3.5-point drop has already priced in Singleton's uncertainty, so we see no value left on the under at 48.5-49.5.
