Introduction to MLB

The allure of Major League Baseball betting lies in its long, action-packed season offering numerous opportunities for bettors. Understanding and applying MLB tips is crucial for anyone looking to navigate the complexities of baseball wagering and turn their bets into significant wins.

Betting on MLB is a bit different from sports like football and basketball. The low scoring in baseball makes MLB betting unique. The other thing that is a huge plus for baseball bettors is the MLB regular season schedule.

There are 30 MLB teams, each playing a 162-game regular season schedule. That gives bettors 2,430 games to bet on in a season. When you factor in the various types of bets – futures, props, and more – betting MLB presents tons of opportunities to find success.

Sports Hub is here to help bettors and handicappers take advantage of those opportunities. Here’s how you can take advantage of MLB.

Understanding MLB Betting Odds and Where to Find Them

One of the foundational MLB tips is mastering how to read and interpret betting odds. Before diving into placing bets, you must grasp the mechanics behind MLB betting odds. These odds can appear in various formats: American, Decimal, and Fractional, with the American format being the most prevalent in the U.S. This format demonstrates the amount required to bet to win $100 or the potential winnings from a $100 bet. Becoming proficient in understanding these odds is a pivotal first step in your journey toward successful MLB betting. For the latest betting odds and scores, visit our MLB odds and scores pages.

Key MLB Tips for Different Types of Bets

  • Moneyline Bets: Always consider the starting pitchers and recent team performance.
  • Run Line Bets: Understand the home/away dynamics and bullpen strength.
  • Over/Under (Totals) Bets: Pay attention to weather conditions and ballpark factors.
  • Prop Bets: Use player statistics and matchups to make informed decisions.
  • Futures Bets: Look at long-term team trends and offseason moves.

Most Common MLB Bets

What separates baseball betting from sports like football and basketball is the lack of scoring. As a result, baseball is more of a moneyline sport. Betting the money line is one of the common bets across all major sports.

MLB bettors can also wager on baseball totals and the point spread, which is called the run line in baseball. Just like the other major sports, there are hundreds of team and player props available with every game on the daily MLB schedule.

Don’t be overwhelmed! We’ve got your back here at Sports Hub, whether you’re a sports bettor looking to win more bets or a handicapper looking to generate more business. Read on to learn more about the most common MLB bets.

Moneyline Bets

As mentioned, betting on MLB games is typically done on the moneyline. The money line bet is the easiest to understand for the inexperienced bettor. It’s like when you were young and bet your buddy that your team would beat his team. The only difference is there are odds attached to each bet.

Understanding the odds is the key to winning more moneyline bets. Let’s look at an example from an MLB game. The New York Yankees are playing their rival, the Boston Red Sox.

  • New York Yankees -125
  • Boston Red Sox +130

The favorite is always listed with negative odds. In this case, it’s the Yankees at -125. What does this mean? If a bettor likes the Yankees to win, the bettor must wager $125 to win $100. You don’t have to bet $125, but you would win $1.00 for every $1.25 you wagered.

On the other end is the underdog, the Red Sox. If you like Boston to pull the upset, you can wager $100 to win $130 based on the odds of +130. For every dollar wagered in this case, the bettor would win $1.30 if the Red Sox win.

MLB bettors need to know that underdogs win roughly 44 percent of the time in MLB games. That opens up a lot of value for bettors.

Run Line Bets:

As mentioned, the point spread in baseball is called the run line. Because of the lack of scoring, betting on the point spread, like in football, just can’t be done in baseball.

Oddsmakers came up with the run line, which is almost always 1.5. That means the favorite is listed at -1.5 and the underdog at +1.5. Odds are attached to each side of the bet. An example appears below.

  • New York Yankees -1.5 (+150)
  • Boston Red Sox +1.5 (-160)

The Yankees are the favorite and must win by at least two runs in order to cover the spread. Odds of +150 are attached to the Yankees run line. A bettor that likes the Yankees to win by at least two would earn $1.50 for $1.00 wagered.

That represents the difficulty of winning by at least two runs in MLB games. Roughly one-third of all MLB games are decided by a single run. That is why, in many cases, you will see the run line favorite with plus-money odds.

Underdogs cover the spread in MLB games when they lose by one run or win the game outright.

Totals Bets

Another common MLB bet is on the game total. Bettors wager on whether a game’s final combined score will go Over or Under a total set by oddsmakers. The total is also given odds and might appear as follows in any sportsbook.

  • New York Yankees O 8.5 (-105)
  • Boston Red Sox U 8.5 (-115)

In the Yankees-Red Sox game, the total has been set at 8.5. It is typical for MLB totals to be set between 6.5 and 8.5. Sometimes, there will be totals that are higher, but not often. MLB totals often come in increments of 0.5. This prevents a “Push” or tie.

There is no winner or loser if a total was set at 8 and the final score was 5-3. When this happens, most sportsbooks just refund your bet.

If, after looking at various metrics, you like the two teams to combine for nine or more runs, you would bet $105 to win $100 on the Over. If you like the Under, the wager is $115 to win $100.

MLB Leagues & Divisions

One of the things the Sports Hub prides itself on is delivering the information bettors and handicappers need to reach their goals. Like pretty much any endeavor these days, the more information you have, the higher your chances of success.

That’s why we present you with the MLB leagues and divisions all in one convenient location. You’ll find the 30 MLB teams organized into the American and National Leagues. Each league is divided into three divisions, each of which is made up of five teams. Sports Hub users can see all of this below.

The organization of the leagues and divisions is important when it comes to MLB betting. The way that the regular season schedule is made relies upon the configuration of the league. For example, division opponents play each other 13 teams each season. Teams will play the other 10 teams in their league as follows: there will be six games against six opponents and seven games against the other four for a total of 64 games.

Teams in the American League will play every team in the National League during the regular season. Teams will play a four-game series against their geographic rival and a three-game series against the other 14 teams in the league.

Understanding the MLB schedule can help bettors and handicappers maximize their goals.
