The Vancouver Canucks (2-6-0) visit the Florida Panthers (3-2-2) on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise (ESPN+ and Scripps Sports in the US, Sportsnet in Canada). Florida is -286 to -303 on the moneyline with a 6.5 total. Vancouver has lost five straight and owns the league's worst penalty kill; Florida just dropped seven on Columbus. Our pick: Panthers moneyline (-286).
Canucks vs Panthers Odds
Ranges across licensed US sportsbooks as of Thursday morning:
| Market | Canucks | Panthers |
|---|---|---|
| Moneyline | +230 to +245 | -286 to -303 |
| Puck line | +1.5 (+100 to -109) | -1.5 (-114 to -120) |
| Total 6.5 | Over -104 to +110 | Under -120 to -130 |
At -286, the Panthers carry an implied win probability of about 74%. Our model has Florida at 79%, a five-point gap in our favor. The juice is on the under 6.5 at every licensed book.
Panthers: Short-Handed Up Front, Still Producing
Florida is playing without Aleksander Barkov and Brad Marchand, both on injured reserve, and it hasn't mattered as much as you'd think. The Panthers sit at 19 goals for and 20 against through seven games, and six of those seven were on the road. Their only home game so far was a 4-1 loss to Minnesota.
The bounce-back came Tuesday in Columbus: a 7-3 win behind a Brady Tkachuk hat trick (four points), two goals each from Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Reinhart, and Matthew Tkachuk assisting on all three of his brother's goals. Matthew carried a five-game point streak into that night.
Defensively, Florida allows just 25.0 shots per game (9th) and 2.86 goals per game (14th). The weak spots are the power play (18.4%, 18th) and discipline: a league-high 14.1 penalty minutes per game.
Goaltending is the question. Jacob Markstrom (2-1-1, 2.03 GAA, .904 SV%) left Monday's 5-3 loss in Buffalo after one period and is listed day-to-day; coach Paul Maurice called it "standard stuff." Akira Schmid (1-1-1, 3.70 GAA, .875) is the projected starter, unconfirmed as of this morning.
Canucks: Leaking Goals and Shots
Vancouver's numbers are rough across the board:
- 4.75 goals allowed per game (31st)
- 31.6 shots allowed per game (31st)
- 22.4 shots on goal per game (30th)
- 57.1% penalty kill (32nd)
The Canucks have scored 26 goals in eight games, but that's propped up by a 14.5% shooting percentage (tied 4th) on very few shots. The skid reads 2-7 at Carolina, 1-4 at New Jersey, 2-6 at the Rangers and 3-2 at the Islanders on Tuesday, when they were outshot 38-26. Brock Boeser scored on the power play in that game, his 80th career power-play goal.
Thatcher Demko is on IR with a hip injury. Kevin Lankinen is 1-5-0 with a 6.90 GAA and .786 save percentage, so Leevi Merilainen (1-1-0, 2.46 GAA, .929) is the projected starter after stopping 35 of 38 in New York. Vancouver is 1-4 on the road.
Key Matchup: Panthers Power Play vs Canucks Penalty Kill
| Stat | Canucks | Panthers |
|---|---|---|
| Power play | 20.0% (T16th) | 18.4% (18th) |
| Penalty kill | 57.1% (32nd) | 75.9% (23rd) |
| Shots for/game | 22.4 | 26.9 |
| Shots against/game | 31.6 | 25.0 |
Vancouver kills fewer than six of every ten penalties. Florida's power play hasn't been sharp, but Reinhart scored on it Monday in Buffalo. Flip side: the Panthers take more penalties than anyone, which gives the Canucks' 20% power play chances to stay close.
Injury Report
| Team | Player | Pos | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Panthers | Aleksander Barkov | C | IR |
| Panthers | Brad Marchand | LW | IR |
| Panthers | Jacob Markstrom | G | Day-to-day |

| Canucks | Thatcher Demko | G | IR |

Also out for Florida: Jonah Gadjovich (IR). For Vancouver: Mackenzie MacEachern, Akil Thomas and Jack Thompson (all IR).

Canucks vs Panthers Prediction
Pick: Florida Panthers moneyline (-286). Our model makes Florida a 79% winner against a market price that implies about 74%. Why we're on the Panthers:
- Shot volume. Florida allows 25.0 shots a game; Vancouver allows 31.6 and generates only 22.4. That's a big gap to make up on the road.
- Special teams mismatch. A 57.1% penalty kill is the worst in the league, and Florida's power play found the net Monday in Buffalo.
- Form. Vancouver has lost five straight and is 1-4 away from home; Florida just scored seven in Columbus.
- Shooting luck runs out. The Canucks' 14.5% shooting on so few shots won't keep bailing out a defense allowing 4.75 a night.
The risk: Florida's goaltending. If Schmid starts and plays to his .875, a hot Merilainen can steal this one. We prefer the moneyline to the -1.5 puck line because of that, plus Florida's thin center depth without Barkov.
Predicted score: Panthers 4, Canucks 2.
