Lakers vs Clippers Prediction, Picks & Odds (Friday, Oct 23)
By SportsHub Model · Edited by Kyle Parker
The 20-second version
- No edge: the model gives the Lakers 71% to win, but -355 to -390 on the moneyline implies about 78–80%.
- Both teams won their openers big: the Lakers beat Golden State 127-105, and the Clippers beat Sacramento 121-96 without trailing.
- The Clippers are without Bradley Beal, Brandon Ingram, Max Strus, Jordan Miller and Yanic Konan Niederhauser, so Darius Garland (30 in the opener) carries the load.
- Walker Kessler went 12-of-12 for 26 points in his Lakers debut, and the Lakers won the paint 66-56.

The Los Angeles Lakers (1-0) host the Los Angeles Clippers (1-0) on Friday at 10:00 PM ET at Crypto.com Arena (Spectrum SportsNet, ClipperVision). The Lakers are 9- to 9.5-point favorites, and their moneyline runs -355 to -390. Both teams won their openers by 20-plus, but the Clippers arrive without Bradley Beal, Brandon Ingram or Max Strus. Our model makes the Lakers 71% to win, below the roughly 78–80% the price implies. No edge on the side.
Two blowouts, two very different opponents
The Lakers opened Wednesday with a 127-105 win over Golden State. They led by as many as 35 and scored 103 points through three quarters, per ESPN. There's a caveat: the Warriors played without Jimmy Butler III, Brandin Podziemski, Kristaps Porzingis, Moses Moody and Charles Bassey.
The Clippers were just as clean in Inglewood. They beat Sacramento 121-96, led 41-29 after one quarter and never trailed. Their bench outscored the Kings' reserves 53-34. It was their first season opener without Kawhi Leonard since 2019, and nobody missed a beat.
So both teams have one +20 margin each. That's one box score per side, not a trend. The page's form and head-to-head modules give you the history. The question here is which opening night carries over against a better opponent.
Doncic and Kessler vs the Clippers' frontcourt
Luka Doncic did what he wanted against Golden State: 28 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals in under 30 minutes. He got there on 7-of-18 shooting, with 5-of-12 from three. Austin Reaves added 23 points and 6 assists.
The story was Walker Kessler. In his Lakers debut he scored 26 points on 12-of-12 shooting, with 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. Per ESPN, he was the first Laker to shoot 100% on at least 12 attempts since Wilt Chamberlain in 1969. The starting five outscored the Warriors 34-24 in 12 minutes together, a 141.7 offensive rating.
Per SB Nation, the Lakers won the paint 66-56 while shooting just 22.2% from three. That's the matchup to watch. Brook Lopez (17 points, 11 rebounds off the bench) and Isaiah Jackson have to keep Kessler away from the rim. If they can't, the Lakers don't need their jumpers to fall.
On the other end, Darius Garland carried the Clippers with 30 points. Rookie Keaton Wagler chipped in 15 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Rui Hachimura had 10 points and 8 rebounds in his Clippers debut, and Friday he faces the team that traded him.
The Clippers' injury list is most of this line
Five Clippers are out: Beal (right knee management), Ingram, Strus (right plantar fascia tear), Jordan Miller (left rotator cuff surgery) and Yanic Konan Niederhauser (right Lisfranc surgery). ESPN lists Beal, Ingram, Strus and Konan Niederhauser with a Nov. 8 estimated return.
Without Beal and Ingram, the Clippers lose two of their most reliable shot creators. That puts the scoring load on Garland, and it's why a 1-0 team that just won by 25 is a 9-point underdog.
The Lakers have smaller questions. Cameron Carr (oblique) and Adou Thiero (knee) are out for a second straight game. Jake LaRavia is questionable with a right ankle sprain; he had 10 points and two 3-pointers in the opener before he got hurt. Collin Sexton is off the injury report and expected to make his Lakers debut after missing the preseason with a right soleus strain.
Prediction: no edge
No edge. The model likes the Lakers to win, but not at this price.
- The price is past the model. -355 to -390 implies about 78–80%. The model is at 71%, with medium confidence. Laying that juice means paying for certainty the numbers don't show.
- The margin case splits. The Lakers' paint edge (66-56) and five Clippers absences argue for a double-digit win. The Clippers' opener (+25, never trailed, a 53-34 bench edge) argues they won't fold. At -9 to -9.5, those two cancel out.
- One game of data. Each team has a single result, and the Warriors were missing five players. That isn't enough to bet a big number either way.
- The Lakers' rotation is in flux. Sexton's debut and LaRavia's ankle make the bench minutes hard to project.
The swing factor is Garland. If he gets to 30 again with Beal and Ingram out, +9.5 is live. If the Lakers' starters repeat that 141.7 rating, it isn't.
The total sits at 225.5 to 226.5. Opening night produced 232 and 217 combined points, and one game each doesn't give us a read on pace, so we pass there too.
