By SportsHub Model · Edited by Kyle Parker
The 20-second version
- No edge: the model has the 76ers at 64% with low confidence, and the -161 to -164 moneyline already implies about 62%.
- Philadelphia's defense ranks 5th (102.5 rating) but its offense ranks 28th (105.4); Indiana is 11th on offense and 15th on defense.
- Tyrese Haliburton (hamstring) and Andrew Nembhard (neck) are questionable; Ivica Zubac, T.J. McConnell and Ben Sheppard are out.
- The spread moved from 76ers -1.5 to -3.5/-4.5 on Tuesday; the total sits at 237.5.

The Philadelphia 76ers (3-1) visit the Indiana Pacers (2-2) on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 7:00 PM ET at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, live on ESPN. Philadelphia is a 3.5- to 4.5-point road favorite after a sharp Tuesday move, with the total at 237.5. The hook: a top-five defense that can't shoot, against a Pacers offense waiting on Tyrese Haliburton's hamstring. Our call: no edge.
How these teams got here
Philadelphia opened 3-0, winning 106-100 at New York, then beating Cleveland 114-106 and Milwaukee 127-116, before Detroit held it to 93 points in a 106-93 loss on Sunday. Tyrese Maxey is carrying the scoring at 28.8 points per game. Joel Embiid adds 21.7 points and 9.7 rebounds in three appearances, Jaylen Brown 20.8 points, and LeBron James, at 42, 16.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.7 assists.
Indiana has alternated results: a 123-120 win in New Orleans, a 121-105 home loss to Dallas, a 136-109 rout in Brooklyn, then a 110-102 loss in Milwaukee on Monday. Haliburton played 35 minutes in that one and scored 22. He's averaging 21.8 points and 9.5 assists, while Pascal Siakam leads the team at 23.5 points and 7.8 rebounds.
Rest tilts to Philly: the Sixers have been off since Sunday, the Pacers since Monday night.
Philadelphia's defense vs. Indiana's shot-making
The numbers split cleanly. Philadelphia's defensive rating of 102.5 ranks 5th, and opponents are scoring 107.0 a night. The offense, though, sits 28th at 105.4 points per 100 possessions, with a 48.0% effective field goal rate that ranks 27th. What keeps it afloat is ball security, a league-best 10.8% turnover rate, and pace (104.4, 4th).
Indiana is the mirror image. It's 11th in offensive rating (113.5) and 9th in effective field goal rate (55.4%), but 15th on defense (112.1), and it's coughing up 15.5 turnovers a game. Obi Toppin has been the bench spark at 15.8 points on 40% from three.
The swing is the backcourt. If Indiana's two main creators sit, a team that already turns it over meets a defense that forces stops while rarely wasting its own possessions.
Haliburton, Nembhard and a thin Pacers frontcourt
The official injury report lists Haliburton questionable with left hamstring tightness, and Andrew Nembhard (16.0 points, 5.7 assists) questionable with neck soreness. Ivica Zubac is out with a left ankle sprain, and T.J. McConnell (hamstring) and Ben Sheppard (meniscus) are out too. Aaron Nesmith and Toppin are probable.
Losing Zubac, who averaged 9.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in three games, hands center minutes to Jay Huff and Larry Nance Jr. against Embiid. Philadelphia's absences are depth pieces: Dominick Barlow, Tacko Fall and Jabari Walker are out. Embiid, Maxey, Brown and James aren't on the report.
How the line has moved
Philadelphia was a 1.5- to 2-point favorite earlier Tuesday. By the evening, as Indiana's injury list grew, the spread had moved to 76ers -3.5 to -4.5, with the moneyline at -161 to -164 (Pacers +135 to +140). The total slipped from as high as 240.5 to 237.5 across licensed books. The market has already priced the Haliburton risk.
Prediction: no edge
Our model makes Philadelphia a 64% winner, but at low confidence, and the moneyline already implies about 62%. No edge on this game.
- Defense travels: Philly's 102.5 defensive rating (5th) against Indiana's 112.1 (15th).
- Shooting doesn't: Indiana's 55.4% effective field goal rate (9th) against Philly's 48.0% (27th).
- Possessions: Philly's 10.8% turnover rate leads the league; Indiana gives away 15.5 a game.
- Price: the spread has already moved three points, so the value on the Sixers is gone at -4.5.
The swing factor is Haliburton. If he plays at full speed, +4.5 looks generous for Indiana; if he and Nembhard both sit, -3.5 looks short.
On the total, 237.5 sits above what both teams have produced: Philadelphia's games average 217 combined points (110 scored, 107 allowed) and Indiana's 231.5. Our lean is the under, but four games is a tiny sample, so it stays a lean.
