Marshall vs South Alabama Prediction, Picks & Odds (Tuesday, Oct. 20)
By SportsHub Model · Edited by Kyle Parker
The 20-second version
- No edge: the model gives South Alabama a 58% win chance at low confidence, while the -152 to -179 moneyline already implies 60-64%.
- South Alabama scores 38.8 points per game to Marshall's 22.0, but allows 34.5, and both of its losses came on the road.
- Marshall's starting QB is unannounced: Carlos Del Rio-Wilson (6 TD, 5 INT) and Zion Turner are in an open competition.

South Alabama (4-2, 2-0 Sun Belt) visits Marshall (3-3, 0-2) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. ET at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, W.Va., live on ESPN2. The Jaguars are laying 3 to 3.5 points with the total at 64.5 to 65.5. The tension: a 38.8-point offense that has lost both its road tests against a Herd team that runs the ball well and keeps handing it away. SportsHub's call: no edge.
How these teams got here
South Alabama arrives on a tear. The Jaguars hung 52 on ULM and 56 on Arkansas State in their last two games and average 38.8 points per game. The catch is the other side of the ball: they allow 34.5 per game, and both losses came on the road, 28-24 at Tulane and 45-21 at Kentucky. They're 3-0 at home and 1-2 away. Per College Football News, South Alabama has scored 39 or more in four of six games and won all four.
Marshall is the opposite story. The Herd opened 3-1 with three wins by a combined nine points (28-26 over Middle Tennessee, 30-24 at Missouri State, 36-35 over Gardner-Webb), then dropped both Sun Belt games: 45-17 at James Madison and 27-21 to Coastal Carolina. Against Coastal, Marshall trailed 27-0 before rallying, and per WV MetroNews the offense threw three interceptions and lost three fumbles. The Herd score 22.0 points per game and allow 33.7.
Rest is a wash. Marshall last played Oct. 10, South Alabama on Oct. 8.
South Alabama's ground game vs a leaky run defense
This game lives on the ground. South Alabama runs for 220.3 yards per game with a two-back punch: Keenan Phillips (444 yards, 5 TD on 80 carries) and PJ Martin (423 yards, 6 TD). The team has 18 rushing touchdowns. Marshall gives up 193.8 rushing yards per game, so the Jaguars should move the chains.
Through the air, Jared Hollins has been efficient and careful: 56-of-92 for 855 yards, 7 TD and 2 INT. Bishop Davenport has added 450 yards and 3 TD without a pick. Anthony Eager has turned 11 catches into 305 yards and 4 scores, and Brendan Jenkins leads the team with 355 receiving yards. The Jaguars have committed just three turnovers all season.
Marshall's best counter is its own run game. The Herd average 158.7 rushing yards, and per College Football News, South Alabama is 0-2 when it allows more than 155 rushing yards, a mark Marshall has hit three times. South Alabama's defense allows 164.2 rushing yards and 264.8 passing yards per game, so the Herd can score if they hold onto the ball. Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw (324 yards, 4 TD) is the receiver to watch.
Marshall's quarterback question
Carlos Del Rio-Wilson has started all six games: 90-of-140 for 1,041 yards, 6 TD and 5 INT, plus 218 rushing yards. After the Coastal loss, coach Tony Gibson opened the job to a competition with Zion Turner (33-of-51, 374 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT), per WV MetroNews, with the starter decided by how the week of practice went. We found no announced starter as of Tuesday morning.
The backfield is thinner too. Fox Sports lists leading rusher Jo'Shon Barbie (230 yards) as out, which puts more on Judah Price (207 yards on 28 carries) and the quarterback's legs. For South Alabama, Fox Sports lists tight end Everett Hunter as probable. We found no official availability report for this game.
How the line has moved
The price has drifted toward South Alabama. At one licensed book the Jaguars' moneyline moved from -159 to -179, and the Herd from +125 to +140. Across licensed books the Jaguars now sit between -152 and -179, with the spread at 3 at most shops and 3.5 at one.
Prediction: no edge
No edge. The reasons:
- The model doesn't beat the market. It gives South Alabama a 58% win probability at low confidence. The moneyline range of -152 to -179 implies 60% to 64%.
- The scoring gap is real. South Alabama scores 16.8 more points per game than Marshall, and the defenses are nearly identical (34.5 vs 33.7 allowed).
- But the venue cuts the other way. Both South Alabama losses came on the road, and the Jaguars are 1-2 away from Mobile.
- Marshall's run game is the Jaguars' weak spot. The Herd's 158.7 rushing yards per game sits right at the line where South Alabama has lost both times.
- The Marshall quarterback is unknown. A starter's name changes this number, and it hasn't been announced.
The swing factor is turnovers. Marshall gave the ball away six times against Coastal; South Alabama has three giveaways in six games. If the Herd protect the ball, a field-goal game is live.
On the total, the two teams point in different directions: South Alabama's games have averaged 73.3 combined points, Marshall's 55.7. With 64.5 to 65.5 sitting in the middle, we pass there too.
