FIU vs Middle Tennessee Prediction, Picks & Odds (Week 8)
By SportsHub Model · Edited by Kyle Parker
The 20-second version
- No edge: the model gives FIU 77%, in line with the -380 to -410 moneyline, so we pass on the 10 to 10.5-point spread.
- FIU allows 14.7 points per game and a CUSA-best 101.0 rushing yards per game.
- Middle Tennessee scores 22.8 but allows 28.3 per game, and its third-down offense ranks second-worst in the nation (per College Football News).
- FIU's offense averages 19.7 points and has scored touchdowns on just 5 of 16 red-zone trips.

FIU (3-3) hosts Middle Tennessee (3-3) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET at Pitbull Stadium in Miami, live on CBS Sports Network. The Panthers are laying 10 to 10.5 points, with the total at 45.5 to 46. The tension: Conference USA's best run defense against a Blue Raiders offense that can't stay on schedule, priced as if FIU's own offense will cash the gap. Our call: no edge — the model's 77% for FIU matches the market.
How these teams got here
Same record, very different shapes. FIU is 3-0 at home and 0-3 on the road, scoring 19.7 points per game and allowing just 14.7. The defense has carried this team: per College Football News, FIU has held every opponent except Jacksonville State to 20 points or fewer.
That exception was last week. The Panthers lost 27-24 at Jacksonville State, a game that, per The League Winners, slipped away on penalties and a missed field goal, with a share of the CUSA lead on the line. Before that, FIU beat New Mexico State 22-3 and LIU 20-3 — wins built on defense, not firepower.
Middle Tennessee is the mirror image: 22.8 points scored, 28.3 allowed, also 3-0 at home and 0-3 away. The Blue Raiders come in off a 33-30 win over Delaware, but this is also the team that lost 55-0 at Kansas. They now go on the road, where they haven't won this season.
FIU's run defense vs. Middle Tennessee's ground game
This is where the game gets decided. FIU allows 101.0 rushing yards per game, the best mark in Conference USA. Middle Tennessee runs for 120.8 per game (seventh in CUSA), led by Antonio Martin Jr., who has 433 yards on 83 carries (5.20 per carry) and ranks fourth in the league in rushing.
If Martin gets stuffed, the game falls on Roman Gagliano. He has been careful with the ball — 1,204 yards, 11 TDs, 2 INTs — and threw for 291 yards and 3 TDs against Delaware. Cam'ron Lacey is his go-to target with 35 catches, 369 yards and 4 TDs. But Middle Tennessee's passing offense sits second-to-last in CUSA at 200.7 yards per game, and per College Football News its third-down conversion rate is second-worst in the nation. FIU, per the same outlet, ranks 10th nationally in third-down stops.
The catch is FIU's offense. JJ Kohl has thrown for 1,458 yards with 7 TDs and 7 INTs, including 278 yards and 2 TDs at Jacksonville State. Running back Devonte Lyons has 151 yards over the last two games. Still, FIU has scored touchdowns on just 5 of 16 red-zone trips (31.25%). Field goals don't cover double digits — even against a Middle Tennessee defense that ranks second-to-last in CUSA.
The lineup picture
We found no official injury report for either team, so there is no injury table for this game. The notable change is at quarterback for Middle Tennessee: Gagliano took over from Nick Vatiato and has been the more efficient passer. Kohl, the App State transfer, is FIU's starter. Linebacker Korey Smith (56 tackles, third in CUSA) anchors the Blue Raiders' defense. Check back before kickoff for any late news.
Prediction: No edge
No edge. FIU is the more likely winner, but the price already says so:
- The model and the market agree. The model gives FIU 77%. The moneyline range of -380 to -410 implies 79-80% before the vig is removed. There's no gap to bet into.
- The spread asks FIU's offense to score. A 19.7-point offense with a 31.25% red-zone touchdown rate has to win by 11 or more.
- Middle Tennessee covers often. Per 1070 The Zone, the Blue Raiders are 4-2 against the spread, and FIU hasn't covered in its one chance as a double-digit favorite this season.
- The matchup still favors FIU. The run defense and third-down numbers point to an FIU win. That's why we aren't taking the points either.
Swing factor: Gagliano's accuracy. Per College Football News, Middle Tennessee is 3-1 when it completes 55% or more of its passes, and FIU is 0-3 when opponents hit that mark.
The total: The two offenses average 42.5 points combined, under a 45.5 to 46 number. Per 1070 The Zone, both teams have gone over just twice in six games. Our lean is the under, but not enough to headline.
