The 20-second version
- No edge: our model has Penn State vs Chattanooga at 50/50 (very low confidence), while the market prices Penn State near 90%.
- Penn State opened -16.5 and is now -12.5 at every licensed book; the total hasn't moved off 159.5.
- Penn State scored 60 paint points and won the glass 45-28 in its opener; Chattanooga took 33 threes at Louisville.
- Both openers finished at 154 combined points, 5.5 under tonight's total.

Penn State (1-0) hosts Chattanooga (0-1) Thursday at 6:00 PM ET at the Bryce Jordan Center on BTN, with the Nittany Lions laying 12.5 points at every licensed book after opening -16.5. The hook: Mocs coach Dan Earl, Penn State's No. 2 all-time assist man, brings a rebuilt roster that let it fly from three at Louisville. SportsHub call: no edge. Our model sees a coin flip the market doesn't.
How these teams got here
Penn State is trying to turn the page on a 12-20 season that included a 2-9 mark in true road games and a 9-8 record at home. Monday's opener was a clean start: a 97-57 rout of Canisius in which the Nittany Lions led by as many as 42. Freshman forward Roko Prkacin came off the bench for 28 points on 12-of-14 shooting in 20 minutes, and sophomore Ivan Juric posted 14 points and 15 rebounds.
Chattanooga went 13-19 last season, Earl's fourth in charge. He is now 81-58 at Chattanooga, per Nittany Sports Now. The Mocs opened Monday at Louisville and never led in an 84-70 loss. Yonatan Levy and freshman Zach Bleshoy scored 14 apiece, freshman Lenny Anigbata added 12, and freshman Kobe McDowell-White handed out 7 assists.
Both teams last played Monday night, so neither has a rest edge. This is the second road game in four days for the Mocs.
The paint vs. the arc
The matchup comes down to two very different shot profiles.
Penn State lived inside against Canisius. It scored 60 points in the paint, won the glass 45-28 with 14 offensive rebounds and shot 55% from the field. It also went just 4-of-19 from three, so the half-court spacing is still a question.
Chattanooga went the other way at Louisville: 33 of its 57 shots came from three, and it made 12 (36%). The cost showed up everywhere else. Louisville outscored the Mocs 42-26 in the paint and grabbed 18 offensive rebounds.
Ball security is the other swing stat. Chattanooga turned it over 18 times at Louisville. Penn State forced 17 turnovers against Canisius and turned them into 21 points. If the Mocs give it away at that rate again, the paint gap gets wider.
The caveat is that each team has one game on the books, against opponents at opposite ends of the sport. Canisius is not Louisville, and the numbers above should be read with that in mind.
Roster turnover and who's available
College basketball has no official injury report, and neither school has announced a status for Thursday.
One name is worth tracking. Tate Darner, Chattanooga's top returning scorer (9.9 points and 4.4 rebounds last season), did not appear in the Louisville box score. No reason has been made public in anything we found. If he's back, the Mocs add a proven scorer to a group that got 26 of its 70 points from two freshmen on Monday.
Penn State is rebuilt too. Freddie Dilione V (14.0 points per game) and Kayden Mingo (13.7) are gone from last season's roster. Josh Reed (11.5 last season) and Juric (10.2) return. Reed had 12 in 21 minutes on Monday.
How the line has moved
This line has moved a lot. Penn State opened -16.5 with a moneyline around -1350. It now sits at -12.5 at every licensed book, with the moneyline at -900 to -1050 and Chattanooga +600 to +660.
The total opened at 159.5 and hasn't budged. Four points off a double-digit spread before tip-off means the market doesn't trust the Canisius blowout as a measuring stick.
Prediction: no edge
SportsHub call: no edge on Penn State vs Chattanooga.
- The model is a coin flip. It has the game 50/50 at very low confidence. The licensed moneylines imply roughly 90% for Penn State, and ESPN's matchup predictor has Penn State at 90.2%. A gap that wide reflects a model short on 2026-27 data, not a hidden edge.
- The interior favors Penn State. It scored 60 paint points and won the boards by 17, against a Chattanooga team Louisville beat by 16 inside.
- The three-point volume favors the dog's cover chances. Thirty-three attempts per night is a high-variance plan, and it's exactly how a 12.5-point underdog stays close.
- The value is gone. The four points the spread has already shed came straight out of the Penn State side's price.
Swing factor: Chattanooga's three-point shooting. A 12-for-33 night keeps it inside the number; a cold one turns this into another Penn State runaway.
On the total: both openers finished at exactly 154 combined points, 5.5 under tonight's 159.5. That's one game each, though, and not enough to bet the under.
