ATP roundup: Cristian Garin upsets Alexander Zverev in Munich

Updated:

Cristian Garin of Chile upset No. 1 seed Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-4 on Friday to move to the semifinals at the BMW Open in Munich.

Garin won the tournament in 2019, and he beat Zverev in his home country on the way to that title. For Garin, it was the first victory over a top-10 player since he defeated Casper Ruud last year at Indian Wells.

The difference in the tight, two-hour match came with Zverev serving down 3-2 in the second set. Garin outlasted him to win a 17-point game, take a 4-2 lead and hold on for the win.

In the semis, Garin will meet third-seeded Taylor Fritz, who dispatched sixth-seed Jack Draper of Great Britain 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1).

Second-seeded Holger Rune of Denmark got past Marc-Andrea Huesler of Switzerland 6-4, 7-6 (3) and will face the winner of the quarterfinal match between No. 4 seed Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany and No. 5 Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, which will conclude on Saturday. Struff led 7-5, 3-1 when their match was suspended Friday due to a lack of light.

Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell

Fifth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas swatted aside an upset attempt and recorded a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8) victory over Argentina’s Facundo Diaz Acosta to reach the semifinals in Spain.

Acosta led 6-5 in the third set and later had a match point in the tiebreak before Tsitsipas won four of the final five points to win the match. Tsitsipas of Greece overcame seven double faults.

Tsitsipas will face Dusan Lajovic in the semifinals after the Serbian notched a 6-4. 3-6, 6-2 victory over No. 16 seeded Arthur Fils of France.

Third-seeded Casper Ruud of Norway will face No. 13 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina in the other semifinals. Ruud beat Italian Matteo Arnaldi 6-4, 6-3, while Etcheverry defeated No. 12 Brit Cameron Norrie 7-6 (4), 7-6 (1).

Tiriac Open

Fourth-seeded Alejandro Tabilo rallied past wild card Joao Fonseca of Brazil 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 to reach the semifinals in Bucharest, Romania.

While Fonseca won more points than Tabilo — 101 to 95 — Tabilo benefited from his eight aces and four double faults from his opponent to advance. The Chilean will meet Marton Fucsovics in the semis after the Hungarian took down Corentin Moutet of France 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

The other semifinal will feature qualifier Gregoire Barrere of France against the winner of the quarterfinal match between Argentine compatriots, top-seeded Francisco Cerundolo and fifth-seeded Mariano Navone. The match was suspended due to darkness on Friday and will resume on Saturday to start the third set. Cerundolo won the first set 7-5, and Navone won the second set 6-4.

Barrere defeated Spain’s Pedro Martinez, the eighth seed, 6-7 (2) 6-3, 6-4.
