AEK Athens vs Real Madrid Prediction, Picks & Odds (Champions League Matchday 4)
By SportsHub Model · Edited by Kyle Parker
The 20-second version
- No edge: the model's very-low-confidence number runs against the market, and Real Madrid at -450 is already priced like the clear favorite it is.
- Real Madrid are 3-0-0 in the league phase and have won five straight in all competitions, 17-6 on goals.
- AEK lost their two Champions League road games 3-1 and 5-1 and start backup keeper Alberto Brignoli with Thomas Strakosha out.

AEK Athens (1-0-2 in the league phase) host unbeaten Real Madrid (3-0-0) at OPAP Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 12:45 p.m. ET, streaming on Paramount+. Madrid are -450 to win in 90 minutes, out from -320 at the open, with AEK at +1000, the draw at +600 and the total at 3.5. AEK need points to climb out of 27th; Madrid have won five straight in all competitions. Our call: no edge.
How these teams got here
AEK opened the league phase with a 1-0 win over LASK and then came apart on the road: 3-1 at Shakhtar on Oct. 14 and 5-1 at Manchester City on Oct. 20. That is eight goals conceded in two Champions League trips. At home in the Greek league they look like a different side, with a 3-0 win over OFI and a 5-0 rout of Panetolikos, but Sunday's 2-0 loss at Panathinaikos made it three defeats in their last five. Across those five games AEK scored 10 and allowed 10.
The table explains why Wednesday matters to them. AEK sit 27th with three points and a -5 goal difference, level on points with Napoli in 24th, the last playoff place, and behind only on goal difference.
Real Madrid have no such worries. They are 5th with nine points and a +5 goal difference after beating Inter 2-1, Roma 4-3 in Rome and RB Leipzig 4-1. Domestically they won 2-1 at Barcelona on Oct. 25 and 3-0 at Racing Santander on Sunday. Over their last five games Madrid are 5-0 with 17 goals scored and six allowed.
Mbappé against a back line that keeps leaking
The matchup that decides this one is Madrid's attack against an AEK defense that has given up eight goals in its last two Champions League games. Kylian Mbappé has three goals, an assist and 12 shots in three league-phase games. Yan Diomande adds a goal and two assists, Arda Güler has two assists in two appearances, and Jude Bellingham has fired seven shots.
AEK's goals have come from all over: Stavros Pilios, Lovro Majer and Răzvan Marin have one each in this competition. Domestically the scoring runs through the strikers. Barnabás Varga has nine goals in 13 appearances in all competitions and Luka Jović seven in 15, per Sports Mole.
Madrid are not airtight, though. They have conceded five goals in three games, three of them in the 4-3 win in Rome, and Thibaut Courtois has already made 16 saves. AEK's Alberto Brignoli has six. If AEK are going to make this a game, it will be by turning Madrid's open play into chances of their own.
Team news: a backup keeper and a thinner Madrid bench
AEK's first-choice goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha is out with a hand injury, so Brignoli stays in goal. João Mário and Lazaros Rota are doubts through illness, per Sports Mole's Tuesday team news, which still has both in its projected AEK XI. Rota is the projected right back, so losing him would weaken the side Vinícius Júnior attacks.
Madrid are without Rodrygo (knee), Raúl Asencio (leg) and Ferland Mendy (thigh). Federico Valverde is a doubt with a hamstring problem, though he is back in training. He has a goal and a team-high 148 accurate passes in the Champions League, so his absence would cost Madrid more control than goals. Sports Mole's projected Madrid XI still has Mbappé, Bellingham and Vinícius together up front.
How the line has moved
The market has moved firmly toward Madrid. They opened at -320 and are now -450; AEK drifted from +650 to +1000 and the draw from +475 to +600. Madrid -1.5 shortened from -125 to -175. The over 3.5 moved from -120 to -135, so goals are being priced in too.
Prediction: no edge
We don't have a side worth headlining. The model's number is very low confidence and makes AEK the more likely winner, which runs against everything above. Here is how we read the game:
- Form: Madrid are 5-0 in their last five with a 17-6 goal margin; AEK are 2-3 with a 10-10 margin.
- Table: Madrid have nine points from nine; AEK have three and have lost both league-phase road games by a combined 8-2.
- Goalkeeping: AEK are on their backup with Strakosha out.
- Price: at -450, Madrid need to win about 82% of the time to break even. That is a fair number for this matchup, but not a value number.
The swing factor is Valverde. Without him Madrid's midfield has less control, and AEK kept clean sheets in both of their last two home games, 3-0 and 5-0 in the league.
On the total, both sides' recent games have been high-scoring: Madrid's last five averaged 4.6 goals and AEK's 4.0. The over 3.5 at -135 already reflects that, so we pass there too.
