Jazz vs Spurs Prediction, Picks & Odds (Wednesday, Oct. 28)
By SportsHub Model · Edited by Kyle Parker
The 20-second version
- No edge: the model gives San Antonio 80%, a shade below the 82%–83% the licensed moneylines imply, so we pass on Spurs -11.5 to -13.5.
- Utah lost Jaren Jackson Jr. (torn MCL, at least six weeks) on Monday; Lauri Markkanen (wrist) and Jaxson Hayes (shoulder) are questionable.
- Net rating gap: Spurs +6.7 (10th) vs. Jazz -8.2 (24th). Utah's 120.0 defensive rating ranks 24th.
- The Spurs are on the second night of a back-to-back; their injury report wasn't filed as of Wednesday morning.

The San Antonio Spurs (2-2) visit the Utah Jazz (1-3) at Delta Center on Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. ET (KJZZ and Jazz+ in Utah, DAZN in San Antonio, NBA League Pass elsewhere). San Antonio is laying 11.5 to 13.5 points, with the moneyline between -560 and -650. The tension: Utah just lost Jaren Jackson Jr. to a torn MCL, but the Spurs are on the second night of a back-to-back. Our call: no edge.
How these teams got here
San Antonio opened 0-2, falling 116-104 to Oklahoma City and 114-110 to Houston, then flipped the switch. The Spurs won 122-106 at Dallas and hammered Sacramento 130-103 on Tuesday, shooting 54.4% from the field and 17-of-37 from three. Julian Champagnie poured in 26 off the bench and Victor Wembanyama added 29 and 10.
The blowout matters for tonight: nobody on the roster played more than 30:14, and Wembanyama logged just 26:46. San Antonio scores 116.5 points per game (12th) and allows 109.8 (9th), good for a +6.7 net rating.
Utah's lone win came 120-119 over New Orleans. Around it: a 123-103 loss at Memphis, a 132-123 loss to the Lakers and a 110-105 loss to Memphis on Monday. The Jazz give up 121.0 points per game (22nd) and own a 120.0 defensive rating (24th). They did have Tuesday off, the one schedule edge they get.
Wembanyama against a thin Utah frontcourt
This is the matchup that swings the number. Wembanyama averages 22.3 points and 10.8 rebounds, and Utah's big-man depth chart is in pieces. Jackson is out, Jusuf Nurkić (right foot) is out, and Jaxson Hayes (right shoulder) is questionable. On Monday, Mo Bamba played 28:34 once Jackson went down.
De'Aaron Fox runs the show at 7.8 assists per game, and San Antonio takes 38.3 threes a night at 35.3%. Utah sits at 32.6% on 33.8 attempts, and it went 10-of-33 against Memphis.
The Jazz attack runs through Keyonte George (22.8 points, 7.8 assists). Ace Bailey leads the team at 8.5 rebounds, and rookie Darryn Peterson scored 14 on Monday. The problem is ball security: Utah coughs it up 16.8 times per game, against San Antonio's 13.8.
The injury picture
Jackson tore the MCL in his right knee in the second quarter Monday, and the team says he will miss at least six weeks. That removes Utah's No. 2 scorer (16.3 points) and its best rim protector in one blow.
Lauri Markkanen (16.0 points) played only 6:02 Monday before spraining his right wrist, his shooting wrist. X-rays were negative, an MRI showed a sprain, and he's officially questionable.
On the other side, San Antonio's report hadn't been filed as of Wednesday morning, which is normal on the second night of a back-to-back. Tobias Harris (calf) sat out Tuesday. Check the Spurs' list before tip: any rest for Wembanyama or Fox changes this game.
How the line has moved
San Antonio opened around -12.5 with a -575 moneyline. Most books now sit at -13 to -13.5 (one is at -11.5) and -600 to -650. The total opened at 234.5 and has dipped to 233.5–234.5. The market has moved toward the Spurs despite the back-to-back, so it's pricing a full-strength San Antonio.
Prediction: no edge
No edge. San Antonio is the better team by a wide margin, but the price already reflects that:
- Model vs. market: the model gives the Spurs 80%, below the 82%–83% the licensed moneylines imply once the vig comes out.
- The ratings gap is real: +6.7 net rating (10th) against -8.2 (24th), and a 108.4 defensive rating (8th) against Utah's 120.0.
- Utah's interior is thin: Jackson and Nurkić are out, and Hayes is questionable. Wembanyama should feast.
- The spread is the catch: 13 points on the road, on a back-to-back, for a team that started 0-2 is a lot to cover. Utah's day of rest pushes the other way.
Swing factor: Markkanen. If his wrist holds up, Utah has a second scorer next to George; if he sits, the Jazz are short on shot creation.
On the total: Utah's games have averaged 233.8 combined points and San Antonio's 226.3, which brackets the 233.5–234.5 number. No play there either.
