The match kicked off at 7:30 PM ET. Miami had 60.4% of the ball and outshot Cincinnati 14-13, with four shots on target to three. All four goals came in the final 30 minutes.

How It Happened

A scoreless first half. Lionel Messi was back in Miami's starting lineup and was booked in the 44th minute. Play stopped late in the half while Gidi received treatment, and he stayed on. Both coaches made changes at the break, with Tom Barlow coming on for Cincinnati and Telasco Segovia and Ian Fray for Miami.

61', Miami 1-0. Off a corner, Casemiro set up Suárez, who finished with his right foot from the left side of the box into the bottom right corner.

80' and 86', Cincinnati turn it around. Evander teed up Mboma Dem for a left-footed strike from the right side of the box into the top left corner. Six minutes later Barlow led a fast break, and Gidi, a center back, beat Dayne St. Clair from outside the box for his first MLS goal.

90', Miami salvage a point. Fillipi, on since the 83rd minute, took a pass from Rodrigo De Paul and scored from the left side of the box, his first MLS goal. In stoppage time Fray blocked an Evander shot from around the penalty spot, Cincinnati's last real chance. Miami coach Kily González said afterward his team was "far too passive in the first half."

Model Check

There was no pick: the preview was a no-edge call. The model favored Inter Miami at 79% (very high confidence) but gave the draw only 5%, while the market priced the draw near 19% after the vig. Miami didn't win; the match ended level. With no pick, there is nothing to grade and no return.

What held up from the preview:

  • The draw price: held up. The result the model rated at 5% is the one that landed.
  • Miami's defense: held up as a concern. A team allowing 1.71 goals per match gave up two in six minutes.
  • Cincinnati's motivation: held up. Chasing a playoff place, they scored twice in the last 10 minutes of regulation to briefly lead.
  • Messi as the swing factor: didn't swing it. He started and went the distance but had no goal or assist.

The preview's lean to the over (3.5 goals) hit with four goals.

Betting Results

  • Moneyline (3-way): a draw after 90 minutes. Pregame prices: Miami -208 to -244, draw +390 to +430, Cincinnati +425 to +500.
  • Spread: the preview published no spread line. With a draw, Cincinnati covered any plus handicap and Miami failed any minus line.
  • Total: four goals. The over 3.5 (near -175 before the match) won, and so did the under 4.5 (near -149).

FC Cincinnati vs Inter Miami Prediction, Picks & Odds (MLS, Oct. 28)

By SportsHub Model · Edited by Kyle Parker

The 20-second version

  • No edge: the model's 79% on Inter Miami relies on a 5% draw; licensed books price the draw near 19% after vig, leaving Miami around 64%.
  • Inter Miami have scored 73 goals (2.35 per match), the most in the East; Cincinnati have allowed 71 (2.29 per match).
  • Cincinnati are 8th on 42 points, level with 7th-place Orlando, after back-to-back wins over D.C. United.
  • Miami won the first meeting 5-3 at Cincinnati; Messi has 25 goals and 14 assists.

FC Cincinnati (11-11-9) visit Inter Miami (15-6-10) on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. ET at Nu Stadium, streaming on Apple TV. Licensed books have Miami at -208 to -244, the draw at +390 to +430 and Cincinnati at +425 to +500. The East's highest-scoring attack meets a back line that has conceded 71 goals, and the model's big Miami number rests on a draw price no book accepts. SportsHub verdict: no edge.

How these teams got here

Miami sit 3rd in the East on 55 points, level with New England and 15 back of Nashville, and they've already clinched a playoff spot. Their last outing was a 2-0 loss to the Red Bulls, with Lionel Messi rested from the starting lineup after a trip to Spain. Before that came three straight wins: 3-1 at Atlanta, 2-0 over NYCFC and 4-0 over D.C. United, nine goals scored and one allowed.

The season numbers explain the hype: 73 goals, 2.35 per match, the most in the Eastern Conference. The other side of the ledger is less tidy at 1.71 conceded per match, with only six clean sheets in 31 games.

Cincinnati arrive with something to play for. They're 8th on 42 points, level with 7th-place Orlando and four clear of 10th-place Columbus, with positions 8 and 9 headed to the wild-card round. Back-to-back wins over D.C. United (2-1 at home, 2-0 away) followed losses to New England (3-2) and Columbus (2-0). They score at 2.06 per match, but the 71 goals allowed (2.29 per match) are the second most in the East.

Messi and Denkey against two open back lines

This is a shootout on paper. Messi has 25 goals and 14 assists, Luis Suárez has 15 goals and Rodrigo De Paul has 14 assists. Cincinnati counter with Kevin Denkey's 17 goals, Evander's 14 and Pavel Bucha's 10 assists.

The first meeting this season went exactly the way the scoring numbers suggest: Miami won 5-3 at TQL Stadium. Per Hooligan Soccer, Miami have scored in each of their last 15 home games, and Cincinnati have conceded in 15 of 16 road matches.

The expected-goals numbers tell a quieter story. Miami create 1.99 xG per match and allow 1.75, a margin of only +0.24. Cincinnati sit at 1.73 for and 1.64 against. Their actual goals allowed (2.29) run well above that xG, which points to poor finishing luck and goalkeeping more than a defense that gets carved open every week. On underlying numbers this matchup is closer than the table suggests.

Cincinnati's back line is thin

The absences fall mostly on the visitors' defense. Miles Robinson and Julián Malatini are both out, and Tyrell Malacia is questionable, which strips Cincinnati's three-man back line of experience against Messi and Suárez. Ender Echenique, who has seven assists, is also questionable.

Miami are without forwards Tadeo Allende, out since May with a knee injury, and Mateo Silvetti. Neither is a reason to fade them with Messi expected back in the starting lineup.

Prediction: no edge

The model makes Miami a 79% winner, a very-high-confidence call. We're not following it:

  • The draw is the whole gap. The model gives the draw 5%. The licensed books price it at +390 to +430, roughly 19% once the vig is removed, which leaves Miami near 64%. The model's "edge" comes from shrinking the draw, not from anything Miami do better than the market thinks.
  • The price is already steep. At -208 to -244 you're laying a lot on a team that concedes 1.71 a match and just lost 2-0.
  • xG trims the gap. Miami's +0.24 xG margin per match isn't dominance, and Cincinnati's defense has been unlucky more than broken.
  • Motivation leans Cincinnati. Miami are already in; Cincinnati are fighting Orlando for 7th.

The swing factor is Messi. If he starts and plays 90 minutes against a depleted Cincinnati back line, Miami's attack can blow this open the way it did in the 5-3.

On the total, books hang 3.5 with the over near -175 and 4.5 with the under near -149. Miami's matches average 4.06 goals and Cincinnati's 4.35, but the xG totals (3.74 and 3.37) point lower. The over is the lean, at a price that already reflects it.
