Alavés vs Málaga Prediction, Picks & Odds (LaLiga Matchday 10)
By SportsHub Model · Edited by Kyle Parker
The 20-second version
- No edge: the model's 73% for Alavés rests on a 5% draw chance; the market prices Alavés near 57% and the draw near 26%.
- Alavés are 3-0-2 at home with 10 goals scored; Málaga have 1 goal in 4 road games.
- Alavés are winless in five (0-1-4); Málaga are last at 0-4-5 and still looking for a first win.

Alavés (3-2-4, 7th) host last-place Málaga (0-4-5) on Friday at 3:00 p.m. ET at Mendizorroza in Vitoria-Gasteiz, on ESPN Deportes and ESPN+. Alavés sit around -155 on the three-way line, with the draw at +260 to +275 and Málaga near +475; the total is 2.5. The tension: a home side that has lost four of its last five against a promoted club still chasing its first LaLiga win. Our call: no edge.
How these teams got here
Alavés opened the season like a team ready to climb. Three home wins came early: 3-0 over Getafe, 1-0 over Villarreal and 5-2 over Osasuna. Since that Osasuna win, Quique Sánchez Flores' side is 0-1-4: a 2-1 loss at Racing Santander, 0-1 at home to Valencia, 0-0 at Athletic Club, 1-2 at home to Atlético Madrid and a 2-1 loss at Celta Vigo last Sunday. Four of those defeats came by a single goal, so this is a team losing tight games rather than getting blown out.
Málaga came up through the Segunda playoff, beating Almería in the final in June, and the jump has been brutal. Nine games, no wins, 6 goals scored, 18 conceded. The draws came against Deportivo, Levante, Celta and Espanyol; the losses include 0-4 at Real Madrid and last Sunday's 2-5 home defeat to Real Sociedad at La Rosaleda. Juanfran Funes' side sits on 4 points, seven behind Alavés.
Where it gets decided: Mendizorroza against a toothless road attack
The split that matters is venue. Alavés are 3-0-2 at home with 10 goals scored and 5 allowed. Málaga are 0-1-3 away with 1 goal scored and 8 allowed. On paper that is a mismatch.
The underlying numbers back the gap without making it a rout. Alavés average 1.44 goals and 1.25 expected goals per game, and concede 1.18 xG. Málaga average 0.67 goals on 0.84 xG and give up 1.62 xG per match. Alavés play without the ball (42% possession) and still create the better chances.
Lucas Boyé is the focal point for Alavés with 5 league goals, and he is the one starter in the attack that looks locked in; Toni Martínez and Mariano Díaz are competing to partner him. For Málaga, Adrián Niño has 3 goals and scored against Real Sociedad. Funes could pair him with Chupete up front in something close to a 4-4-2.
Goalkeeping is another edge for the hosts: Alavés stop 74% of shots on target and have 3 clean sheets; Málaga are at 65% with one.
Málaga travel thin in midfield
Málaga's absences hit the middle of the park. Pablo Martínez did not travel with plantar fasciitis, and he was one of the scorers against Real Sociedad. Joaquín Muñoz is out with a right soleus injury, Juan Cruz suffered a setback, and Aarón Ochoa, Diego Murillo and Julen Lobete remain in recovery, Lobete with a torn ACL. Jens Cajuste has medical clearance but little match rhythm, so a start is unlikely.
Alavés are without Facundo Garcés and Mikel Rodríguez, both recovering from ACL tears. They do get Ángel Pérez back from the suspension that followed his red card against Atlético, and Ville Koski is over the muscle problem he picked up with Finland. That gives Sánchez Flores close to his preferred back three and wing backs.
Prediction: No edge on the result
Our model makes Alavés a 73% favorite, with Málaga at 22% and the draw at just 5%. That draw number is the problem. Strip the margin from the three-way prices and the market lands near 57% Alavés, 26% draw and 16% Málaga. Give the draw a realistic quarter of the outcomes and the model's own Alavés number falls back toward the high 50s, right where the price already sits.
- The venue split favors Alavés: 10 home goals in 5 games against a Málaga attack with 1 road goal in 4.
- But form doesn't: Alavés have one point from their last five and haven't won since early September.
- The draw is live: Málaga have drawn four of nine, and all of Alavés' last five finished within one goal, including a 0-0.
- -155 is a full price for a team in this run, with no draw protection.
The swing factor is the first goal. With one goal in four road games, Málaga are poorly built to chase a deficit, so an early Alavés goal changes the game; a scoreless first hour makes the draw the likeliest single outcome.
On the total of 2.5, the under is the shorter price, but the trends cut both ways: Alavés' home games went over in 3 of 5, Málaga's road games stayed under in 3 of 4. We pass there too.
