- Both teams have scored exactly 117 points in four MAC games; Western Michigan is +34 in league play, Bowling Green +24.

- The line opened Western Michigan -15.5 and has settled at -13.5; the total rose from 43.5 to 44.5.

Western Michigan (5-3, 3-1 MAC) hosts Bowling Green (2-6, 2-2 MAC) at noon ET Saturday at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo, on CBS Sports Network. The Broncos are 13.5-point favorites at every licensed book, with the moneyline from -525 to -550 and the total at 44.5. The hook: in four MAC games, each team has scored exactly 117 points, yet the market prices this as a two-touchdown gap. SportsHub's call: no edge.
How these teams got here
Western Michigan opened with a 13-12 loss at Michigan, beat Monmouth and Rice, then got run off its own field by Boise State, 32-7. MAC play has been kinder: 20-17 at Buffalo, 38-7 over Kent State and 21-14 at Central Michigan before last Saturday's 45-38 loss at Toledo. On the season, the Broncos score 26.6 points a game and allow 20.4.
Bowling Green's 2-6 record carries some ugly non-conference baggage: a 20-13 home loss to FCS Tarleton State, then 56-7 at Nebraska and 55-7 at Iowa State. Since league play started, the Falcons have been competitive. They won 24-20 at Miami (OH) and 38-10 over Sacramento State, then lost 32-31 in overtime to Ball State and 31-24 at Buffalo.
Strip out the non-conference games and the gap shrinks. Western Michigan is +34 in MAC play (117-83), and Bowling Green is +24 (117-93). Both teams played last Saturday, so neither has a rest edge.
Jalen Buckley vs an offense that can't run
The Broncos win by leaning on the ground game. They run for 162.1 yards per game, and Jalen Buckley has 634 yards and 8 touchdowns on 120 carries. Broc Lowry adds 255 rushing yards and 4 scores to his 1,251 passing yards, 10 TDs and only 3 interceptions. Aveion Chenault is the top target with 28 catches for 431 yards.
Bowling Green can't answer in kind. The Falcons average 3.2 yards per carry (132nd nationally, per Covers) and 288.0 total yards per game (135th). Austyn Dendy leads them with 371 rushing yards at 3.6 a carry. That puts the offense on Jay Kastantin, who is 130 of 194 for 1,418 yards, 10 TDs and 6 interceptions. He has been sharper lately, with 432 yards and 5 TDs across the last two games, mostly to Winn Sharp (25 catches, 305 yards) and tight end Jeremiah Scoby (27 catches, 282 yards).
That passing game is Bowling Green's best path to a cover. Western Michigan allows only 20.4 points a game (37th, per Covers), but 368.6 yards (83rd) and 216.4 passing yards (81st). The Broncos also own the turnover column: 13 takeaways (4 interceptions, 9 fumble recoveries) against Bowling Green's 9, while Lowry has thrown half as many picks as Kastantin.
Lineup watch
We couldn't find a published availability report for either team as of Friday afternoon, and Nucleus lists no active injuries for either side. Both quarterbacks played last week: Lowry threw 29 passes at Toledo and Kastantin 27 at Buffalo. Check for late status news before kickoff. A change at either quarterback would move this number more than anything else in the matchup.
How the line has moved
The Broncos opened at -15.5 with a total of 43.5 and a -750 moneyline. The spread drifted to -13.5 by Oct. 26, touched -12.5 on Oct. 28 and settled back at -13.5, while the moneyline came in to -525 to -550. The market has taken two points off the opener and nudged the total up a point to 44.5.
Prediction: no edge
No edge. Here's why we're passing:
- The model has nothing to say. It has this game at 50/50 with very low confidence. The books price Western Michigan near 84%, and ESPN's matchup predictor is at 88.7%. We won't headline a side the model doesn't back.
- The Broncos are the better team. They have the run game (162.1 yards a game against a Falcons attack averaging 3.2 a carry), home field and the turnover edge (13 takeaways to 9).
- But 13.5 is a lot in this league. Western Michigan's MAC wins came by 3, 31 and 7, and Bowling Green's two MAC losses came by 1 and 7. Western Michigan also went 1-4 against the spread in its last five, per Covers.
- Bowling Green's defensive numbers look worse than they are. The Falcons allow 29.8 points a game, but 111 of those points came against Nebraska and Iowa State. In MAC play they allow 23.3.
Swing factor: if Buckley is getting 5-plus a carry by halftime, this looks like the 38-7 Kent State game. If Kastantin keeps up his last two weeks, it looks like the 20-17 Buffalo grinder.
On the total: 44.5 sits between Western Michigan's MAC extremes. The Buffalo and Central Michigan games totaled 37 and 35 points, and the Kent State and Toledo games totaled 45 and 83. Bowling Green has gone over in 6 of 8 games, per Covers. That's not enough to play either way.
