The 20-second version
- No edge: our model has Xavier vs Eastern Michigan at a flat 50/50 with very low confidence, so it can't back either side of Xavier -23.5.
- Xavier forced 19 turnovers with 14 steals in its 97-52 opener; Eastern Michigan committed only 7 turnovers in its 71-70 win at Coastal Carolina.
- The spread has grown from Xavier -20.5 to -23.5, while the total fell from 156.5 to 151.5.
- Mohammad Habhab scored 34 off the bench for Eastern Michigan, 18 of them at the free-throw line.

Xavier (1-0) hosts Eastern Michigan (1-0) at 7:00 PM ET Friday at Cintas Center in Cincinnati, streaming on ESPN+. The Musketeers are 23.5-point favorites across the licensed books after opening at 20.5, and the total has dropped from 156.5 to 151.5. Xavier's opener was a 45-point rout built on turnovers; Eastern Michigan's was a one-point road escape built on free throws. Our call: no edge.
How these teams got here
Xavier opened Monday with a 97-52 win over Mount St. Mary's. The Musketeers led 51-16 at halftime, held the Mountaineers to 19-of-65 shooting (29%), and forced 19 turnovers with 14 steals. That pressure turned into 29 fast-break points and 48 points in the paint.
Eastern Michigan's opener was a different kind of night: a 71-70 win at Coastal Carolina in a game with 13 lead changes. The Eagles shot only 40% from the field and were outrebounded 40-32, but they won the line, going 23-of-29 on free throws against 11-of-16 for the hosts.
Last season frames the gap. Xavier went 15-18 but 12-6 at home, scoring 78.4 points per game while allowing 80.6. Eastern Michigan went 10-21, just 3-14 on the road, scoring 70.7 and allowing 73.5.
Xavier's pressure vs. Eastern Michigan's ball security
This is the matchup that decides how big the margin gets. Xavier's opener came from its bench as much as its starters. Guard Chance Westry scored 17 off the bench on 6-of-9 shooting with five steals. Jovan Milicevic added 14 (3-of-5 from deep), Tru Washington had 10 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals, and Nikos Chitikoudis grabbed 11 rebounds in 18 minutes. The Musketeers had 26 assists on 35 baskets.
Eastern Michigan was careful with the ball at Coastal Carolina, committing only 7 turnovers. If that holds in Cincinnati, Xavier loses the transition points that broke Monday's game open. The Eagles' offense is narrow, though. Mohammad Habhab scored 34 off the bench (7-of-16 from the field, 18-of-21 at the line) with 13 rebounds, and Jaiden Martin added 17 with three 3-pointers. Everyone else combined for 20 points.
Xavier wasn't sharp everywhere: it shot 11-of-31 from three and 16-of-26 at the line (62%) in the opener. Against a team that lives at the stripe, those misses matter for a 23.5-point number.
Lineups and availability
College basketball has no official injury report, and we found no dated team announcement of an absence for either side, so the injury table is empty. Monday's rotations are the working assumption. Xavier played 15 players, ten of them for 15 minutes or more, which is the depth that keeps a lead growing after halftime. Eastern Michigan used 10 players, with Habhab and Martin each logging 34 minutes. Foul trouble for either of them would leave the Eagles with very little scoring.
How the line has moved
The market has moved toward a bigger Xavier win in a slower game. The spread opened at Xavier -20.5 and sits at -23.5 across the licensed books, while the total opened at 156.5 and is now 151.5 (one book has 152).
Prediction: No edge
No edge on Xavier vs Eastern Michigan. Here's why:
- The model has no opinion. It has this game at a flat 50/50 with very low confidence. That can't beat a market making Xavier a 23.5-point favorite, and it sits far from ESPN's matchup predictor, which gives Xavier 95.8%.
- The turnover battle cuts both ways. Xavier forced 19 turnovers in its opener, but Eastern Michigan gave the ball away only 7 times in its first game.
- Venue favors Xavier. The Musketeers were 12-6 at home last season, and the Eagles were 3-14 on the road.
- Free throws can keep the Eagles in range. Eastern Michigan made 23 of 29; Xavier made 62% of its own.
Swing factor: Habhab. If Xavier keeps him off the line, the Eagles' offense has no second source of points, and a blowout like Monday's becomes realistic.
On the total: both openers finished under 151.5 (149 and 141 combined points), but Xavier's games averaged 159 combined points last season. That's not enough to take a side on 151.5.
