By SportsHub Model · Edited by Kyle Parker
The 20-second version
- No edge: the model sits at a flat 50/50 (very low confidence), far short of the 71-72% Kennesaw State needs at -250 to -260.
- Kennesaw State lost its top three scorers (35.9 PPG combined in 2025-26); Austin Peay returns Rashaud Marshall and Zyree Collins (29.8 PPG).
- The Owls went 13-3 at home last season; the Governors went 9-7 on the road.
- The total opened at 157.5 and now sits at 161.5 at every licensed book.

Kennesaw State (1-0) hosts Austin Peay (1-0) Friday at 7:00 PM ET at VyStar Arena, streaming on ESPN+. Licensed books have the Owls at -5.5 to -6 and the total at 161.5. The hook: the market prices Kennesaw like a 71-72% favorite, yet the Owls lost their top three scorers while the Governors bring back two of their best. Our call: no edge.
How these teams got here
Kennesaw State went 21-14 last season, 13-3 at VyStar Arena, scoring 82.8 points and allowing 76.0. The Owls won three straight neutral-site games in mid-March before a 73-64 loss to Gonzaga ended the year.
Austin Peay was better on paper: 22-9, 12-1 at home, 9-7 on the road, 81.6 points scored and 73.2 allowed per ESPN's schedule data. But the Governors limped out, dropping three of their last four, finishing with a 90-83 loss to Queens on March 8.
Both openers were blowouts against overmatched visitors on Monday. Kennesaw State beat Midway 116-57, Austin Peay beat Lane College 109-65. Both teams have had three days off, so rest is a wash.
Turnover vs. continuity
This is the real story. Kennesaw State's top three scorers from 2025-26, RJ Johnson (14.5 PPG), Braedan Lue (11.1) and Frankquon Sherman (10.3 PPG, 8.4 RPG), are not on this year's roster. That's 35.9 points a night gone. The returners are Trey Simpson (9.2 PPG last season, 10 in the opener), Amir Taylor (7.2) and Kaden Rickard (5.6).
The new pieces looked good against Midway. Freshman Kyler Theophile scored 18 on 6-of-6 shooting in 12 minutes, freshman Antwane Daniels added 12 points and 6 assists, and all 14 Owls who played scored. Kennesaw won the glass 64-27, grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and piled up 54 fast-break points.
Austin Peay keeps its core. Rashaud Marshall (16.3 PPG, 6.8 RPG last season) opened with 16 on 6-of-6, and Zyree Collins (13.5 PPG, 4.3 APG) had 18 points and 8 boards. That's 29.8 points a night of proven production back. Freshmen Cam Ryans (15 off the bench) and Talon Todd (13, 3-of-3 from deep) chipped in.
The unit battle: Kennesaw's size on the boards against Austin Peay's hands. The Governors had 17 steals and 32 points off turnovers against Lane College. The Owls turned it over 11 times against Midway.
Who's available
College basketball has no official injury report, and ESPN's game page lists no injuries for either team as of Friday morning. The bigger unknown is how Kennesaw's young rotation handles a team that returns real minutes. Nobody learned much from two 40-plus-point wins.
How the line has moved
Kennesaw State opened at -6.5 with a total of 157.5. The spread has come down to -5.5 to -6 across licensed books, while the total has climbed four points to 161.5 everywhere. The Owls' moneyline sits at -250 to -260, with Austin Peay at +200 to +210.
Prediction: no edge
No edge. Here's why:
- The model doesn't have a view. It sits at 50/50 with very low confidence. Kennesaw at -250 to -260 needs a 71-72% win chance just to break even. ESPN's Matchup Predictor has the Owls at 74.3%, so the gap between our model and the market is a data problem, not a signal.
- Returning production favors Austin Peay. Marshall and Collins combined for 29.8 PPG last season. Kennesaw's three returners combined for 22.0.
- Home court favors Kennesaw. The Owls went 13-3 at home last season, the Governors 9-7 on the road.
- The openers prove little. Midway shot 30% and Lane College 38%. Neither 100-point night tells us how these rotations hold up against a real opponent.
The swing factor is turnovers. If Austin Peay's pressure from Monday travels, the +5.5 to +6 looks live. If Kennesaw's size wins the glass again, the Owls cover.
On the total, 161.5 sits above both teams' 2025-26 combined game averages (158.8 for Kennesaw, 154.8 for Austin Peay). After a four-point climb from the open, there's no value in chasing the over either.
