- Clemson beat Stetson 85-72, shooting 51% and going 26-of-35 at the line.
- The spread has dropped from Clemson -17.5 to -15.5/-16; the 141.5 total hasn't moved.

Clemson (1-0) hosts American (0-1) on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7:00 PM ET at Littlejohn Coliseum, streaming on ACC Network Extra. Licensed books have the Tigers at -15.5 to -16 with a 141.5 total, down from a -17.5 open. The tension: Clemson cruised in its opener while American shot 28% and turned it over 18 times at Cincinnati, yet the number has dropped two points. No edge: our model sits at 50/50.
How these teams got here
Clemson opened Monday with an 85-72 win over Stetson. The Tigers led by as many as 25, led for 98% of the night and shot 51% (25-of-49), with 9-of-24 from three. They lived at the line, too: 26-of-35 on free throws while Stetson was whistled for 24 fouls.
It wasn't spotless. Stetson scored 44 points in the paint, and that's the number American will study.
American's opener went the other way. The Eagles lost 79-53 at Cincinnati, shooting 15-of-54 (28%) and 7-of-29 from three. They had 18 turnovers against just 7 assists, the Bearcats turned 15 steals into 23 points off turnovers, and Cincinnati won the glass 48-32 with 16 offensive rebounds.
The longer track record points the same way. Clemson went 24-11 last season and 13-3 at Littlejohn, scoring 73.8 points and allowing 66.7 per game. American finished 16-16 and just 5-10 on the road, scoring 74.6 and allowing 71.3.
Rest is even: both teams played Monday and have three days off.
Clemson's frontcourt vs American's ball security
Clemson spread the scoring across all five starters. Ace Buckner led with 20 points and three 3-pointers. Dylan Faulkner posted 16 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists on 7-of-8 shooting, Cole Certa added 13 points and 6 assists (7-of-8 at the line), Liutauras Lelevicius had 13 on 3-of-4 shooting, and David Fuchs scored 12 on 5-of-6.
American runs through Madden Collins. He scored 20 at Cincinnati, 8 of them at the line, but also committed 6 turnovers. Julen Iturbe added 10 points and 7 rebounds. The other ten Eagles combined for 23 points, and Dean Hogans went 3-of-12 off the bench.
The swing question is whether American's turnover problem follows it to South Carolina. Clemson forced only 9 turnovers with 5 steals against Stetson, so the Tigers didn't show the kind of pressure that buried American at Cincinnati. If the Eagles keep the giveaways near single digits, a margin in the teens is a fair fight. If they cough it up 18 times again, it won't be.
Availability and lineups
College basketball has no official injury report, and ESPN listed no injuries for either team when we checked Friday morning. Clemson's opening five was Lelevicius, Faulkner, Fuchs, Buckner and Certa. American started Iturbe, Eric Michaels, Matt Mayock, Greg Jones and Collins. Check for any late lineup news before tip.
How the line has moved
Clemson opened at -17.5 with a -2400 moneyline. It now sits at -15.5 to -16, with the moneyline at -2000 to -2100 (American +1000 to +1100). The 141.5 total hasn't moved. A two-point drop after American's 26-point loss says the market isn't overreacting to one bad night.
Prediction: No edge
No edge on Clemson vs American. Here's why:
- The model has no read. It sits at a flat 50/50 with very low confidence, and a flat number this early in the season says more about the model than about the game.
- The market is far away. The -2000 to -2100 moneyline implies roughly 95% for Clemson, and ESPN's matchup predictor has the Tigers at 94.6%. A 50% model can't be headlined against that.
- The spread signals point both ways. American's 28% shooting and 18 turnovers argue for Clemson. A line that has dropped from -17.5, a Clemson defense that forced only 9 turnovers and Stetson's 44 paint points argue against laying it.
- Home court favors Clemson, 13-3 at Littlejohn last season against an American team that went 5-10 on the road.
Swing factor: the free-throw line. Clemson's 35 attempts drove the Stetson win. A tighter whistle takes away an easy source of points.
Total: 141.5 sits between last season's combined scoring averages (140.5 in Clemson games, 145.9 in American games), and the openers (157 and 132 total points) cut both ways. No play.
