How It Happened

The 10:30 PM ET tip on truTV drew 13,989 to Arizona's home opener. Hamad Mousa's driving layup gave Cal Poly its only lead at 2-0, and Bryce James hit his first college basket, a three, to make it 9-3. Mousa kept the Mustangs close with two early threes, and Jess Esso Essis' three cut it to 16-15 at 13:17.

Arizona answered with nine straight points, two of them Holt layups, for a 25-15 lead. After Mousa's third three made it 28-20 at 9:30, the Wildcats scored 13 straight in under two and a half minutes: a Krivas dunk, then a three, a layup, a dunk and a pull-up from Cameron Holmes around two Ivan Kharchenkov free throws, for 41-20 with 7:04 left. Arizona led 59-41 at the break after scoring 30 first-half points in the paint.

Krivas scored 16 more in the second half, almost all at the rim, and Kharchenkov's layup made it 85-56 with 7:20 left, the largest lead of the night at 29.

Cal Poly kept shooting. Mousa finished 8 of 10 from three, Jason Scott hit 5 of 6 off the bench, and the Mustangs closed on a 13-4 run to make the final margin 20.

Arizona shot 55% (36 of 66) and made 28 of 36 free throws despite going 4 of 14 from three. It won the paint 56-26 and the glass 44-30, and its 14 steals helped turn 19 Cal Poly turnovers into 25 points.

Model Check

There was no pick to grade: our preview called this no edge, so the return is $0. The model rated the game a flat 50/50 at very low confidence, with no favorite. Arizona, the heavy market favorite, won by 20.

What held up and what didn't:

  • Arizona's top-heavy scoring. The preview noted that Kharchenkov and Derek Dixon scored 56 of 75 points against UCLA. This time four Wildcats reached double figures, and Kharchenkov and Dixon combined for 25.
  • Cal Poly's ball security. The preview flagged 25 turnovers against Cal State San Marcos. The Mustangs committed 19 more, and Arizona scored 25 points off them.
  • The 30-point cover. The preview called it a lot to ask. Cal Poly's 16 threes held the margin to 20.
  • Arizona's three-point shooting. The swing question was a bounce back toward last season's 36.6%. It didn't come (4 of 14), and Arizona won inside instead.

The preview also passed on the total, noting the openers produced 159 and 140 points. This one produced 188.

Betting Results

  • Moneyline: Arizona won. The preview called its moneyline effectively off the board.
  • Spread: Arizona was a 30.5- to 31.5-point favorite and won by 20, so Cal Poly covered.
  • Total: 188 points, over the 173.5 to 174 posted in the preview.

Arizona Wildcats vs Cal Poly Mustangs Prediction, Picks & Odds (Nov 5, 2026)

By SportsHub Model · Edited by Kyle Parker

The 20-second version

  • No edge: our model rates Arizona vs Cal Poly a 50/50 coin flip at very low confidence, so we don't headline a side against a 30.5-31.5 point spread.
  • Arizona shot 37% from the field and 7-of-30 from three in its 84-75 opening loss to No. 22 UCLA.
  • Cal Poly won its opener 78-62 and out-rebounded Cal State San Marcos 59-36, but committed 25 turnovers.
  • The total has climbed from 168.5 at open to 173.5-174.

No. 5 Arizona (0-1) hosts Cal Poly (1-0) at 10:30 PM ET Thursday at McKale Center in Tucson, live on truTV. Licensed books have the Wildcats at -30.5 to -31.5 with a total of 173.5 to 174, both up from a -29.5 / 168.5 open. The tension: a top-five team that shot 23% from three in its opener, against a Big West team that just won by 16. Our call: no edge.

How these teams got here

Arizona opened 2026-27 with an 84-75 loss to No. 22 UCLA Monday at the Hall of Fame Series in Las Vegas. The Wildcats led for just 3% of that game and never by more than two. They shot 22-of-60 (37%) from the field and 7-of-30 (23%) from three, and only a 24-of-30 night at the free-throw line kept it within single digits.

It's a reload year in Tucson. Arizona went 36-3 last season, including 16-1 at home, and reached the Final Four before losing 91-73 to Michigan. Three of its top scorers from that team have moved on to the NBA.

Cal Poly is 1-0 after a 78-62 home win over Cal State San Marcos Monday. The Mustangs led for 91% of that game, built a lead as large as 23 and won the glass 59-36. They also turned it over 25 times, a number that gets punished against a high-major roster. Cal Poly finished 14-19 last season, 6-11 away from home, while averaging 82.1 points.

Both teams played Monday night, so neither has a rest edge.

Kharchenkov vs a balanced Mustangs attack

Ivan Kharchenkov carried Arizona in Las Vegas: 38 points on 12-of-20 shooting, 12-of-16 at the line and 10 rebounds. Derek Dixon added 18 but needed 17 shots and went 4-of-12 from deep. Everyone else combined for 19 points. Motiejus Krivas gave Arizona 9 rebounds and 6 blocks, the kind of rim protection that changes how a mid-major attacks the paint.

Cal Poly's balance is the counterpoint. All five starters reached double figures against San Marcos, led by Hamad Mousa's 18 and Cayden Ward's 15 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Austin Goode went 4-of-5, and Guzman Vasilic hit 3-of-6 from deep. The Mustangs took 35 threes and made 12 (34%).

The swing question is Arizona's supporting cast. If it's Kharchenkov or bust again, a 30-point margin is a lot to ask. If the Wildcats' shooting drifts back toward last season's 36.6% from three, the gap opens fast.

Lineup notes

College basketball has no league-wide injury report, and neither program had a public game-status designation we could confirm by Thursday afternoon, so the injury table is empty. Watch Arizona's rotation instead: Bryce James started against UCLA but played six minutes, while JJ Mandaquit logged 32 minutes off the bench with a team-high six assists.

How the line has moved

Arizona opened -29.5 and now sits -30.5 to -31.5 across licensed books. The total moved more: 168.5 at open, 173.5 to 174 now, a five-point climb. At this price the moneyline is effectively off the board.

Prediction: no edge

No edge on Arizona vs Cal Poly. Here's why:

  1. The model has no read. It rates this a 50/50 coin flip at very low confidence, which says it has no real handle on an opening-week mismatch. We don't headline a side it doesn't stand behind.
  2. The bounce-back is already priced. The spread has moved a point or more toward Arizona since open, to -30.5 / -31.5.
  3. Arizona was two players deep. Kharchenkov and Dixon scored 56 of the 75 points against UCLA, and a 30-point cover needs more than that.
  4. Cal Poly's turnovers cut the other way. Twenty-five giveaways against San Marcos is a problem against an Arizona team that scored 14 fast-break points against UCLA.

Risk factor: one game of data per team. Arizona's 23% three-point night is as likely to be noise as a trend.

On the total: 173.5 to 174 asks for more than either opener produced (159 and 140 combined points), and the number has already climbed five points. We pass there too.
