By SportsHub Model · Edited by Kyle Parker
The 20-second version
- Pick: Panthers -2.5 (-120), high confidence. The model gives Carolina a 68% win chance vs. about 60-61% implied by the licensed moneyline.
- Bryce Young leads the NFL at 309.8 passing yards per game and has thrown for at least 281 yards in every game.
- Carolina scores 29.2 points per game (4th); Tampa Bay scores 19.8 (25th) and ranks 31st in total offensive EPA.
- Baker Mayfield (thumb) is questionable; Emeka Egbuka, Luke Goedeke and Antoine Winfield Jr. are out for Tampa Bay.

The Carolina Panthers (3-2) host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-5) Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET at Bank of America Stadium, on FOX. Carolina is a 2.5- to 3-point favorite with the total at 44.5. The tension: the NFL's leader in passing yards per game runs into a defense that ranks fourth in EPA allowed per play, while Baker Mayfield is questionable to return from a dislocated thumb. Our pick: Panthers -2.5 (-120), high confidence.
How these teams got here
Carolina sits atop the NFC South on a two-game win streak. The latest was a road win at Philadelphia in Week 6, against an Eagles team without Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith. Bryce Young threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, and Chuba Hubbard ran for 120 yards and a score. The Panthers average 29.2 points per game (4th) and run 68.4 plays per game (2nd), but they also allow 24.6 points (21st).
Tampa Bay's season has gone sideways. The Bucs started 0-2 for the first time since 2014, their lone win came at Dallas in Week 5, and they are 0-4 at home. Week 6 stung: they led Pittsburgh 16-3 entering the fourth quarter, Jalon Daniels threw two fourth-quarter interceptions, and the Steelers won in overtime. Tampa Bay scores 19.8 points per game (25th) and ranks 31st in total offensive EPA, per Sharp Football Analysis.
Bryce Young against a defense that doesn't get home
Young leads the NFL at 309.8 passing yards per game, with 11 touchdowns and two interceptions, and he has thrown for at least 281 yards in every game. Carolina gains 5.9 yards per play (6th); Tampa Bay manages 4.7 (25th).
The Bucs' defense is the real counterweight. It ranks fourth in opponent EPA per play and eighth in opponent success rate, per SI, and allows just 5.0 yards per play (9th). The catch is how it gets there: Tampa Bay blitzes on 42.6% of dropbacks (2nd) yet ranks 31st in pressure, per Sharp Football Analysis. A blitz that doesn't arrive is exactly what a quarterback averaging 300-plus yards wants to see. The Bucs did post a season-high five sacks against Pittsburgh, so this isn't a lock to stay quiet.
Tampa Bay's best counterpunch is on the ground. Carolina allows 5.12 yards per carry, the most in the league, and the Bucs run for 4.76, per Squawka. Bucky Irving was a full participant Friday after an illness.
Mayfield's thumb and the missing pieces
Mayfield is questionable after missing three games with a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand. He practiced all week, Todd Bowles said he looks "ready to go," and the team's site expects him to start. Even healthy, his pre-injury numbers were modest: 63.5% completions, 6.4 yards per attempt and a sack rate of 11.9%, 32nd in the league, per Sharp Football Analysis.
The bigger problem is around him. Tampa Bay has ruled out WR Emeka Egbuka, RT Luke Goedeke and S Antoine Winfield Jr., and LB Christian Rozeboom went to injured reserve. Losing Winfield removes the defense's best playmaker on the back end against a passing game that is putting up 300 yards a week.
Carolina is not whole either. OLB Jaelan Phillips and OLB Thomas Incoom are out, which thins a pass rush that already has to find Mayfield, and CB Jaycee Horn remains on injured reserve. T Monroe Freeling and LB Bam Martin-Scott are questionable.
How the line has moved
The September lookahead had Tampa Bay as a 1.5-point favorite. By early this week Carolina was a 3-point favorite and touched -3.5 on Oct. 21. Since Mayfield returned to practice, the number has slipped back to -2.5 to -3. The total opened at 45.5, dipped to 43.5 and now sits at 44.5 across licensed books.
Prediction: Panthers -2.5
Pick: Panthers -2.5 (-120), high confidence.
- The model is clear of the market. It gives Carolina a 68% win probability; the licensed moneyline (-149 to -159) implies about 60% to 61%.
- The offensive gap is real. Carolina outscores Tampa Bay by 9.4 points per game and averages 1.2 more yards per play.
- Young's floor is high. At least 281 passing yards in every game, against a defense that ranks 31st in pressure and is now without Winfield.
- Tampa Bay's offense is shorthanded. No Egbuka, no Goedeke at right tackle, and a quarterback coming off a thumb injury with a 32nd-ranked sack rate.
- The ATS form backs it. The Bucs are 1-9 against the spread in their last 10 games, per SI.
The risk: Tampa Bay's run game against the league's worst yards-per-carry defense, with Carolina missing two edge rushers. If Irving controls the clock and Mayfield is sharp, this is a field-goal game either way, which is why we take -2.5 over -3.
On the total: the under is 7-3 in Carolina's last 10 and 6-4 in Tampa Bay's, per SI, but Carolina's pace and Young's volume push the other way. We have no play at 44.5.
