Thunder vs Nuggets Prediction, Picks & Odds (Oct. 22 Home Opener)
By SportsHub Model · Edited by Kyle Parker
The 20-second version
- No edge: our model gives OKC about 73% to win, in line with the market at -312 to -345, so we pass on the side and the total.
- OKC's two home wins over Denver last season came by 6 (OT) and 3, both inside today's 7.5- to 8.5-point spread.
- The total has climbed from 231.5 to 235.5–236.5; last season's four meetings split 2-2 against 236.

The Oklahoma City Thunder (1-0) play their home opener against the Denver Nuggets (0-0) on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 9:30 p.m. ET at Paycom Center, on ESPN. OKC is a 7.5- to 8.5-point favorite, with the total at 235.5 to 236.5. The hook: the Thunder took three of four from Denver last season, but both of their home wins in that series landed inside this number. SportsHub call: no edge on the side or the total.
How these teams got here
Oklahoma City went 64-18 last season, finished first in the West and then lost the conference finals to San Antonio. Tuesday's opener was a revenge night: a 116-104 win in San Antonio, a 65-44 halftime lead and a 26-point cushion at its biggest.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32 on 13-of-27 shooting, with three blocks and three steals. Jared McCain hit 6 of 8 threes for 20 points off the bench. The warning sign: the Spurs won the second half 60-51.
Denver went 54-28, finished third in the West and lost in the first round. That was its third straight early playoff exit. The Nuggets reshaped the edges of the roster:
- In: DeMar DeRozan (37, slotted as sixth man), Alpha Diallo and Marvin Bagley III.
- Out: Peyton Watson (sign-and-trade to Cleveland), Bruce Brown and Tim Hardaway Jr.
This is Denver's first regular-season game. OKC is on one day of rest after Tuesday's trip.
Jokic against the Thunder's length
Nikola Jokic averaged 27.7 points, 12.9 rebounds and 10.7 assists on 56.9% shooting last season. Jamal Murray added 25.4 points a night.
Per NBA.com, Denver's offense scored 6.4 points per 100 possessions more than league average, its best mark in a decade. The defense ranked 21st for the second straight year, which is why Dave Joerger joined the staff.
The Thunder answer with size and pressure:
- Chet Holmgren (17.1 points, 8.9 rebounds last season) blocked four shots on Tuesday.
- Isaiah Hartenstein pulled down 9.4 rebounds a game last year.
- Victor Wembanyama went 1-for-13 from the field against that frontcourt.
Jokic isn't Wembanyama, but this is where the game will be decided.
The 2025-26 series says close. The Thunder won 121-111 in Denver, then 127-121 in overtime and 129-126 at home. Denver won the April meeting 127-107.
Who's missing
Oklahoma City rules out guards Nikola Topic (back) and Otega Oweh (Achilles, out for the season) and center Thomas Sorber (knee). None of the three is part of the core rotation. Holmgren isn't on the injury report after De'Aaron Fox threw him to the floor on Tuesday.
Denver is without wing Julian Strawther (left knee sprain, to be re-evaluated in six weeks). Forward Spencer Jones is questionable with a hamstring injury. With Watson gone and Strawther out, the Nuggets' wing depth gets tested on night one. Aaron Gordon's health is the other question after he played only 36 games last season.
How the line has moved
In early October the Thunder were -7.5, about -278 on the moneyline, with a total of 231.5. Now the spread sits at -7.5 to -8.5, the moneyline at -312 to -345, and the total has climbed to 235.5 to 236.5. The market has already priced in Tuesday's rout and a faster game.
Prediction: No edge
No edge: we pass on Oklahoma City at -7.5 to -8.5 and on the total.
- Model matches market. Our model gives OKC about a 73% win chance. The no-vig market price is about the same, so there's no gap to bet.
- Home margins were tight. The Thunder's two home wins over Denver last season came by 6 in overtime and by 3, both short of this spread.
- Track records point both ways. Per a Buzz Tulsa (iHeart) betting preview, OKC went 39-43 ATS last season despite 64 wins. Denver went 44-38 ATS and 4-0 ATS as an underdog of 8.5 or more.
- But Denver's defense is a liability. A 21st-ranked defense against Gilgeous-Alexander, who averaged 31.1 points on 55.3% shooting last season, is the case for laying the points, so the side splits.
Swing factor: Denver's bench minutes. DeRozan plus a thin wing group behind Jokic and Murray is where OKC built Tuesday's 21-point halftime lead.
On the total: last season's four meetings totaled 232, 248, 255 and 234 points. Two cleared 236 and two didn't, and the market has already moved four points to 235.5. No play.
