By SportsHub Model · Edited by Kyle Parker
The 20-second version
- No edge: our model gives Minnesota 64%, below the 67.5–71.4% the licensed moneyline implies, at low confidence.
- Anthony Edwards (33.3 ppg) is out after knee surgery; the Wolves shot 15-of-45 from three in a 119-114 loss to Golden State without him.
- Minnesota's defense ranks 2nd (103.4 rating); the Clippers' offense ranks 28th (106.1) and committed 24 turnovers Wednesday.
- The line has dropped from -9.5 to -7.5, and the total from 230.5 to 221.5–222.5.

The Minnesota Timberwolves (3-2) open NBA Cup group play against the Los Angeles Clippers (1-3) at Target Center on Friday at 8 p.m. ET (KARE and DAZN in Minnesota, ClipperVision in L.A.). Minnesota is a 7.5-point favorite, -238 to -294 on the moneyline, in its first game since Anthony Edwards had knee surgery. The Wolves' defense is elite, but their 33-point scorer is gone. No edge: our model gives Minnesota 64%, below the 67.5–71.4% the market implies.
How these teams got here
Minnesota opened 3-0 with three blowouts: 131-106 at Miami, 115-93 at Orlando and 117-94 over Toronto. Then the right knee became the story. Edwards scored 47 in a 127-125 overtime loss at Cleveland on Monday, sat out Wednesday against Golden State and had an arthroscopic procedure on Thursday. ESPN reported he could miss up to two months, and the team is targeting a December return.
Even without him, the Wolves nearly stole Wednesday's game. They lost 119-114 to the Warriors as Stephen Curry scored 44. Five Wolves reached double figures, led by Jonathan Kuminga's 20, but the team shot 15-of-45 from three.
The Clippers have lost three straight since a 121-96 opening win over Sacramento: 125-117 at the Lakers, 108-101 at Oklahoma City and 103-87 at home to the Lakers on Wednesday. Both teams played Wednesday and had Thursday off, so rest is even.
Minnesota's defense vs. a stalled Clippers offense
This is the matchup that sets the number. Minnesota's defensive rating of 103.4 ranks 2nd in the league, per Basketball Reference. The Clippers' offensive rating of 106.1 ranks 28th, and their 106.5 points per game rank 29th.
Wednesday's loss showed the problem: the Clippers shot 26-of-74 (35%) and turned it over 24 times. Darius Garland carries the offense at 21.5 points and 6.5 assists. Keaton Wagler (15.0 points) scored 21 off the bench Wednesday, and Brook Lopez (14.0) and Derrick Jones Jr. (12.5) are the other steady scorers.
Without Edwards, Minnesota's offense runs through Jaden McDaniels (15.8 points on 54.8% shooting), Terrence Shannon Jr. (14.2 points, 44% from three), LaMelo Ball (13.4 points, 6.6 assists), Kuminga (13.2) and Ayo Dosunmu (13.0). Rudy Gobert's 12.2 rebounds and Joan Beringer's 7.6 boards in under 16 minutes give the Wolves the edge on the glass. One warning sign: in a small early sample, Minnesota's offense was bottom-10 in efficiency with Ball on the floor and Edwards off, per Cleaning the Glass data cited by CBS Sports.
Who's missing, and why it matters
Edwards (knee) and Donte DiVincenzo (Achilles) are out for Minnesota. That takes away 33.3 points per game and the league lead in made threes (18 through four games, per CBS Sports).
The Clippers are thinner still. Bradley Beal (knee), Brandon Ingram (heel surgery) and Max Strus (plantar fascia) are out, and Rui Hachimura (quad) is questionable after missing Wednesday's game. Hachimura was playing 31.3 minutes a night but shooting just 26.3%, so losing him costs the Clippers size more than scoring. Without him, Jones and Kobe Sanders keep taking heavy wing minutes.
How the line has moved
Minnesota's earliest licensed line was -9.5 with a 230.5 total. It's now -7.5 everywhere, and the total has fallen to 221.5–222.5. That 8-to-9-point drop in the total is the Edwards news being priced in, along with a Clippers offense that hasn't cleared 117 since opening night.
Prediction: no edge
No edge. The model favors Minnesota at 64% and rates it low confidence. The licensed moneyline already implies 67.5–71.4%, so there's no value on the Wolves at -238 or shorter.
- For Minnesota: a defense ranked 2nd faces an offense ranked 28th, and that's the biggest mismatch on the floor.
- For Minnesota: the Wolves still scored 114 against Golden State without Edwards, with five players in double figures.
- For Minnesota: the Clippers are without Beal, Ingram and Strus and just committed 24 turnovers.
- Against laying 7.5: in its first game without its 33-point scorer, Minnesota shot 33% from three and trailed by double digits at halftime.
The swing factor is Ball. If he runs the offense like his 6.6-assist average, Minnesota can pull away. If he shoots like Wednesday's 2-of-8 from deep, this stays close.
On the total, our lean is the under, since the Clippers rank 29th in scoring and Minnesota is missing its top scorer. But the market has already dropped 8 to 9 points, so most of that value is gone. It's not a pick.
