Minnesota United (8-12-10, 34 points) visit Houston Dynamo (13-9-8, 47 points) on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 8:30 p.m. ET at Shell Energy Stadium, live on Apple TV. Houston sits between +102 and +110 on the three-way moneyline, Minnesota +210 to +230 and the draw +255 to +270. These teams drew 2-2 two weeks ago, and neither defense has stopped anyone since. Our call: no edge on the result.
How these teams got here
Houston has already clinched a playoff spot. The Dynamo are fifth in the West, one point behind San Jose and one ahead of LAFC, so the fight now is for a top-four seed and a home series. The problem is form: Houston is winless in six. The last win was a 2-1 result at Real Salt Lake on Sept. 9. Since then: 0-1 vs San Jose, 2-2 at Cincinnati, 0-2 at Sporting KC, 2-2 vs Minnesota, 3-3 vs San Diego and 2-2 at Dallas. That's four draws in five games.
Minnesota is 13th with 34 points, five behind ninth-place Colorado for the last wild-card spot, with four games to play. The Loons lost five straight in September, conceding 17 goals in that run, before drawing 2-2 with Houston and 2-2 with Colorado. Last Saturday they beat St. Louis CITY SC 3-2, their first league win in at least eight matches. Anything short of three points here makes the chase very hard.
Yeboah against a Houston back line that keeps bending
Kelvin Yeboah has 17 goals, a Minnesota single-season record, and nine of them have come in 841 minutes since the World Cup break. He scored a penalty in the first meeting. Houston has allowed 39 goals in 30 games (1.30 per match), but it has given up seven in its last three.
Houston's answer is Guilherme: 16 goals and 10 assists in 29 appearances. Mateusz Bogusz adds eight goals and four assists. Minnesota's defense is the softest in this matchup: 55 goals allowed in 30 games (1.83 per match). That's why the Loons have outscored Houston (47 to 41) and still sit 13 points behind it.
The first meeting was even almost everywhere: 14 shots each, six on target each, and Minnesota gave up the equalizer in stoppage time.
Lineups and absences
Minnesota is without goalkeeper Alec Smir (knee) and midfielder Peter Stroud (muscle). Joaquín Pereyra, the club's assist leader, missed the first meeting. He came off the bench in each of the last two games and set up Marcus Caldeira's winner against St. Louis. Whether he starts is the biggest lineup question for the Loons.
Houston is missing defender Felipe Andrade, and A. Resch is suspended for yellow-card accumulation. Lawrence Ennali is questionable.
Prediction: no edge
No edge on the three-way result. The reasons:
- The model leans hard on a low draw. It gives Houston 67% to win, but only 8% to the draw. Licensed books price the draw at about 25-26% once you strip out the vig.
- The market's Houston number is about 45%. That's a big gap, and it comes almost entirely from the draw.
- Draws are this matchup's habit. Houston has drawn four of its last five, and the first meeting ended 2-2.
- Houston's edge on paper isn't showing up now. The Dynamo have a better goal difference (+2 vs -8), but they're winless in six.
The swing factor is motivation. Minnesota needs points to stay alive, while Houston is chasing seeding. An early Minnesota goal would open the game up.
On the total, the over 2.5 is priced at -161 to -164. Both teams' last three matches all reached four goals, so the over has the trend. At that price, though, it's a lean, not a play.
