The 20-second version
- No edge: our model has Syracuse vs SMU at 50/50 (very low confidence), while the market prices SMU near 77–78% at -8.5 to -9.5.
- SMU outscores opponents by 15.3 points per game; Syracuse by 5.3.
- The spread fell from SMU -12.5 to -9.5 while the total climbed from 55.5 to 58.5.
- Steve Angeli is expected to play for Syracuse after a questionable tag; two other Orange QBs are out after surgery.

No. 19 SMU (6-1, 4-1 ACC) visits Syracuse (3-4, 1-4 ACC) at noon ET Saturday at the JMA Wireless Dome, live on ESPN2. The Mustangs are 8.5- to 9.5-point road favorites, down from a 12.5-point open, with the total at 58.5. The tension: SMU has the steadier quarterback and the better numbers, but the money has drifted toward a Syracuse team that lives in one-score games. Our call: no edge.
How these teams got here
SMU has won four straight since a 41-31 loss at Louisville on Sept. 19. The run includes Missouri State (34-24), Boston College (25-16), Virginia (23-13) and last week's 59-20 demolition of California. Through seven games the Mustangs score 36.4 points and allow 21.1, a margin of +15.3 per game.
Syracuse took a different route to 3-4. The Orange beat North Carolina 31-30 in overtime last week, after losing to Louisville (34-26) and at Virginia (28-25). Earlier they won at UConn 42-41 in overtime and lost at Pitt 27-13. Three of their last five were decided by three points or fewer. On the season they score 31.6 and allow 26.3, a margin of +5.3.
Kevin Jennings vs. Syracuse's quarterback carousel
Jennings is the cleanest piece in this game. He has completed 156 of 215 passes (72.6%) for 2,062 yards, 19 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Against Cal he went 16 of 23 for 223 yards and three scores. Kendrick Raphael adds 641 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns at 5.3 per carry, and he had 104 yards and three total touchdowns last week.
Syracuse has used four different passers this fall. Steve Angeli leads the room with 987 yards, 6 TDs and 5 INTs on 55.8% passing. Malachi Nelson (532 yards), Amari Odom (398 yards, 6 TDs) and Danny Lauter have also thrown passes. Angeli was sharp enough at Chapel Hill: 20 of 34, 256 yards, 2 TDs, with Ahmad Miller grinding out 125 yards on 30 carries. His best target is Umari Hatcher: 54 catches, 887 yards, 8 TDs.
The pressure numbers favor SMU. Syracuse has allowed 16 sacks and thrown 9 interceptions. SMU has allowed 8 sacks, thrown 5 picks, and its defense has 21 sacks, led by Marques White's 5.5.
Who is missing
Angeli carried a questionable tag early in the week. By Friday evening, the ACC availability report had him expected to play, per RotoWire. That matters because the depth behind him is thin. Nelson had tight-rope surgery on a high ankle sprain and will miss a few weeks, and Odom had shoulder surgery that ends his season, both per Syracuse.com. If Angeli goes down, the next man up has thrown 11 passes all year.
The Orange are also without WR Terrell Wilfong (collarbone) and TE Carter Bashir. SMU will be without WR Carterrious Brown. None of those absences changes the shape of the game the way Angeli's health would.
How the line has moved
SMU opened -12.5 with a moneyline near -455. The spread now sits at -9.5 at most licensed books and -8.5 at one, and the moneyline has settled at -345 to -355. The total went the other way, from 55.5 to 58.5. The market is telling you two things: it doesn't trust a double-digit road number in this spot, and it expects points.
Prediction: no edge
No edge. Here's why we're passing:
- The model is a coin flip. It has Syracuse and SMU at 50/50 with very low confidence. The best bettable SMU price, -345, implies 77.5%, and ESPN's matchup predictor has SMU at 72.1%. A 50/50 model can't back either side of that gap.
- SMU is the better team on paper. A +15.3 scoring margin against Syracuse's +5.3, a 72.6% passer against a 55.8% one, and half the sacks allowed.
- But the number has already moved. Three points of movement toward Syracuse took the value out of SMU at -12.5, and three of the Orange's last five games were decided by a field goal or less.
- The quarterback depth cuts both ways. Angeli is expected to play, but one hit would put Syracuse on its fourth quarterback of the season.
The swing factor is Syracuse's protection. If the Orange keep SMU's pass rush off Angeli, this can stay inside the number. If the Mustangs get home the way the sack totals suggest, they can pull away late.
On the total, the two offenses average a combined 68.0 points, but that's already priced into a number that has climbed three points. No play there either.
