Stanford vs Elon Prediction, Picks & Odds (Oct. 17)
By SportsHub Model · Edited by Kyle Parker
The 20-second version
- No edge: the model's 50/50 read at very low confidence does not fit this FBS-vs-FCS game.
- Stanford has been outscored 115-10 in its last two games and allows 41.5 points per game.
- Elon lost 16-0 to Wofford with five turnovers, its second straight loss.
- No complete licensed line was available, so we are not quoting odds.

Stanford (2-4) hosts FCS Elon (4-3) at 7:30 p.m. ET Saturday (4:30 p.m. PT) at Stanford Stadium, streaming on ACCNX. The Cardinal have been outscored 115-10 in their last two games and need wins to keep bowl hopes alive; Elon arrives off a 16-0 home loss to Wofford. We could not verify a complete line from licensed books, so we are not quoting one. Our model's read on this game does not hold up: no edge.
How these teams got here
Stanford is in year one under Tavita Pritchard, and October has been brutal. The Cardinal lost 57-3 at Wake Forest and then 58-7 at No. 3 Notre Dame last Saturday, the largest margin in 40 meetings with the Irish. Earlier they lost 45-6 to Miami. The two wins came against Hawai'i (37-27 in the opener) and Georgia Tech. Stanford is 1-3 in the ACC, has lost 14 straight road games, and is scoring just 15.7 points per game while allowing 41.5.
The schedule now softens. Elon is the first of a stretch that includes NC State at home next Friday, a stretch that will decide whether Stanford can still chase six wins.
Elon, under longtime coach Tony Trisciani, started 2-0 by outscoring Glenville State and Davidson 80-7, and later beat Sacred Heart 24-21 and Maine 43-17. But the Phoenix have dropped two straight: 30-23 at New Hampshire and 16-0 to Wofford on homecoming, when Elon turned the ball over five times.
Stanford's offense vs. Elon's front
The Cardinal offense runs through quarterback Davis Warren, the Michigan transfer. He threw for 310 yards in the opener against Hawai'i, but the last two weeks have been rough: he was sacked and fumbled on the first snap at Notre Dame and finished 12-for-22 before Charlie Mirer replaced him late. Stanford managed 202 total yards and just 58 rushing yards in South Bend. Running back Micah Ford ran for 99 yards and 3 touchdowns against Hawai'i, and Stanford needs that version of its ground game back.
Elon's identity is the run. Kamerin McDowell-Moore carried 25 times for 164 yards against Wofford, and Elon outgained the Terriers 258-252 while losing by 16. The giveaways, not the yardage, sank the Phoenix.
That makes the matchup simple on paper: Stanford's defense, which has given up 57 and 58 points in consecutive weeks, gets a step down in competition against an FCS offense that moves the ball on the ground but has struggled to protect it.
Lineups and availability
Neither school had released an official injury report when we checked, and Nucleus listed no active injuries for either team. The key personnel question for Stanford is at quarterback: Warren remains the starter, but Mirer saw the field at Notre Dame, and a lopsided game could get the backup more snaps. For Elon, the question is ball security after five turnovers against Wofford.
Linebacker Sam Mattingly had a career-high 11 tackles at Notre Dame and anchors a Stanford defense that will see a much different offense this week.
Why we are not quoting a line
Our odds feed showed only a partial market for this game, and no licensed U.S. book had a complete line in our data when we checked. Rather than print numbers we cannot confirm, we are leaving the spread, moneyline and total out of this preview. Check the odds module on this page for the current market.
Prediction: no edge
Our model rates this game a 50/50 coin flip at very low confidence, and that does not match the matchup in front of us. Here is why we pass:
- Model reliability: a 50/50 read on an FBS home team against an FCS visitor is not a number we can stand behind, so we do not headline a pick.
- Stanford's form: outscored 115-10 in its last two games, the Cardinal have not earned trust to cover a big number.
- Elon's form: two straight losses, including a shutout with five turnovers, cut against the upset case.
- No verified line: without a complete licensed market, there is no price to measure value against.
The swing factor is turnovers: Elon's ball security against a Stanford team that needs a clean, confident win. On the total, Stanford's 41.5 points allowed per game points one way and both offenses' recent struggles point the other, so we would stay away.
