The 20-second version
- No edge: the model gives Fresno State 72% at medium confidence, below the 75% to 78% a -303 to -357 moneyline implies.
- Fresno State is 5-1 ATS and +8 in turnover margin (5th in FBS); San Diego State is 1-5 ATS and ranks 135th in total offense and defense.
- The spread has dropped from Fresno State -9.5 at the open to -7.5; the total holds at 45 to 45.5.

San Diego State (2-4) hosts Fresno State (4-2) on Saturday at 10:30 p.m. ET at Snapdragon Stadium, live on CBS Sports Network. Fresno State is a 7.5-point road favorite, down from 9.5 at the open, and the total sits at 45 to 45.5. The Bulldogs are 5-1 against the spread; the Aztecs are 1-5 and coming off a 66-14 loss. SportsHub's call: no edge. The model's 72% for Fresno State trails the 75% to 78% the moneyline implies.
How these teams got here
Fresno State's only losses came against two ranked teams: a 39-0 opener at No. 14 USC and a 38-31 home loss to No. 23 Boise State last week. In between, the Bulldogs won four straight, beating Sacramento State, San Jose State, Rice and Washington State. They have held four of six opponents to 24 points or fewer, allow 20.0 points per game, and are +8 in turnover margin, fifth-best in FBS.
San Diego State's season has gone the other way. After a 53-20 win over Portland State, the Aztecs lost at UCLA, at home to James Madison and at Toledo. They edged Texas State 31-29, then lost 66-14 at Oregon State. They score 22.8 points per game, allow 35.0, and rank 135th in FBS in both total offense and total defense.
This is still a rivalry, and the Aztecs have recent history on their side: San Diego State won last season's meeting 23-0 in Fresno, and the last 10 meetings are split 5-5.
The matchup: Fresno State's passing game vs. a leaky SDSU secondary
Fresno State quarterback Jayden Mandal has thrown for 1,252 yards with 8 touchdowns and 1 interception, completing 64.7% of his passes. Against Boise State he threw for 218 yards and two scores and ran one in. Josiah Freeman leads the receivers with 28 catches for 375 yards, and Ezekiel Avit had 96 yards and two touchdowns last week.
San Diego State allows 299.2 passing yards per game, which ranks 137th nationally. That looks like Fresno State's clearest path to a margin.
The Aztecs' own passing game is the problem on the other side. Jayden Denegal is completing 53.6% of his throws with 6 touchdowns and 5 interceptions, and he went 5-of-19 for 78 yards at Oregon State. Javion Kinnard leads the ground game with 355 yards. San Diego State ranks 138th in time of possession (24:11) and 125th in red-zone offense (71.4%), so drives stall and the defense is on the field too long.
Lineups and the rest of the picture
We could not find an official availability report for either team when we checked on Friday afternoon. Mandal and Denegal both took the snaps in their teams' most recent games.
The rest of the case is about ball security and penalties. Fresno State is fifth in FBS in penalty yards per game (32.0), while San Diego State is -2 in turnover margin. Against a team that rarely beats itself, the Aztecs need short fields to keep up, and their offense hasn't shown it can create them.
How the line has moved
Fresno State opened as a 9.5-point favorite and is now 7.5. A two-point move toward a 2-4 home underdog that just lost by 52 is notable. The market isn't buying the Aztecs so much as respecting the rivalry, the home field and Fresno State's road form (2-1 away). The total has stayed in the 45 to 45.5 range.
Prediction: no edge on San Diego State vs Fresno State
No edge. The model favors Fresno State at 72% with medium confidence. That is the right side on the numbers, but the price has caught up:
- The market is ahead of the model. A moneyline of -303 to -357 implies 75% to 78%, more than our number.
- Most of the value already moved. At 9.5 the spread required more; at 7.5 the market has already credited San Diego State's home field, so there is no late value either way.
- Fresno State's statistical edge is real. It holds a +10 turnover-margin gap and the clear quarterback advantage, and San Diego State is 137th against the pass. That's why there is no case for the Aztecs either.
- The ATS records are extreme, Fresno State 5-1 and San Diego State 1-5, and records that lopsided tend to be priced in by October.
Swing factor: Denegal's accuracy. If San Diego State can't complete passes, Fresno State wins comfortably; if the Aztecs control the clock, a one-score game is realistic.
On the total: 45 to 45.5 sits between Fresno State's defensive profile and San Diego State's struggles on both sides of the ball. The over has hit in 4 of 6 Aztecs games and 3 of 6 Bulldogs games, which isn't a strong enough signal to call.
