- Kent State is 0-4 on the road this season and has scored 12 points combined in those four games.
- Sacramento State is 0-5 in its first MAC season, scoring 11.4 and allowing 36.6 points per league game.

Kent State (3-5, 2-2 MAC) visits Sacramento State (1-7, 0-5 MAC) at Hornet Stadium on Friday at 10:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The Golden Flashes lay 7 to 7.5 points across licensed books, with the total at 46.5. The tension is simple: Kent State is a touchdown road favorite after scoring 12 points combined in four road games. Our model gives Kent a 73% win chance, right where the market sits, so this one is no edge.
How these teams got here
Kent State comes in off its best game of the season, a 35-20 home win over Akron in which Dru DeShields went 18-of-33 for 294 yards and four touchdowns. That win is also the outlier. The Flashes average 14.9 points and allow 30.5, and the split between home and road is stark: 3-1 in Kent, 0-4 away. The road games were at South Carolina (0-57), at Ohio State (3-59), at Western Michigan (7-38) and at South Florida (2-29). Two of those were power-conference mismatches, but the last two were Group of Five opponents.
Sacramento State's first MAC season has been rough. The Hornets have lost six straight, and their only win came 52-0 over Mississippi Valley State on Sept. 5. In five conference games they've scored 11.4 points and allowed 36.6, losing by an average of 25.2. Last week was a 34-17 loss at Ball State.
The common opponents point Kent's way. Kent State beat Ball State 26-13 and lost to Ohio 13-10, both at home. Sacramento State lost to those same two teams 34-17 and 48-7.
Kent's offense against a soft Hornets front
This matchup is all about Kent State's offense, which has struggled more than most of FBS. The Flashes gain 286.0 yards per game and 4.5 yards per play, and they run for just 3.0 yards per carry. Covers ranks them 137th in scoring. Brandon White leads the ground game with 235 yards on 68 carries. The passing game carries the load: DeShields is 124-of-218 for 1,439 yards with 8 touchdowns and 6 interceptions, and Wayne Harris has 40 catches for 552 yards and 4 scores.
Sacramento State's defense is the cure for a lot of offenses. It allows 371.5 yards and 177.0 rushing yards per game at 4.8 yards per carry, and it has just 9 sacks in eight games. That gives DeShields time, and it gives Kent its best chance all year to run the ball. Boogsie Silvera is the Hornets' playmaker, with 61 tackles and 3 interceptions.
On the other side, Sacramento State runs better than Kent does. Isaiah Ene averages 5.2 yards per carry (303 yards), and Daniel Swinney averages 5.0. Jackson Sharman has thrown for 1,246 yards with 8 touchdowns and 6 interceptions, and Matt Coleman is his top target (39 catches, 492 yards, 5 TDs). The worry is protection. The Hornets have allowed 16 sacks, and Kent's defense has 19, led by Hayden Dawahare's 4 along with his team-high 42 tackles.
Quarterback usage and availability
No MAC availability report was posted for this game as of Thursday night, so there's no injury table here. DeShields has taken Kent's snaps all season. Sacramento State has mixed in Brian Salazar Jr. behind Sharman over the last two weeks. On Oct. 17, Salazar went 4-of-5 for 71 yards and a touchdown while Sharman was 11-of-21 for 69 yards. Sharman was sharper last week at Ball State (17-of-27, 187 yards, 2 TDs). Watch for whether Sacramento State keeps rotating; a change at quarterback is the Hornets' clearest path to sparking an offense that averages 15.3 points.
How the line has moved
The spread opened at Kent State -9.5 and has come down to -7 to -7.5. The moneyline has moved too: Kent opened around -450 and now sits between -290 and -360. Money has come in on the home underdog, which makes sense given Kent's road numbers. The total hasn't budged off 46.5.
Prediction: no edge on Kent State vs Sacramento State
No edge. Kent State is the better team, but the price already reflects it:
- The model matches the market. Our 73% for Kent sits inside the 71–74% the licensed moneylines imply once you remove the vig.
- The road numbers cut against the favorite. Kent State has scored 12 points in four road games, and its offense gains 4.5 yards per play. That isn't an offense built to cover a touchdown away from home.
- Sacramento State has rarely kept it close. The Hornets are 0-5 in the MAC with a -25.2 average margin and 2-6 against the spread, per Covers.
- The common opponents favor Kent. It beat Ball State by 13; Sacramento State lost there by 17.
- The value is gone. At -9.5 the line looked a bit high; the drop to -7/-7.5 has absorbed the case for either side.
The swing factor is Kent's ground game against a Sacramento State front that allows 4.8 yards per carry. If White and company finally get going, the Flashes can control the clock and pull away late.
On the total, both offenses score about 15 points a game, and both defenses allow more than 30. Kent games are 5-3 to the over and Sacramento State's are 3-5, per Covers. At 46.5, we see no lean.
