Mertens Rallies Past Maria to Reach Singapore Tennis Open Quarterfinals

No. 2 seed Elise Mertens of Belgium overcame a first-set tiebreaker loss to defeat Germany’s Tatjana Maria 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-1 on Thursday, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Singapore Tennis Open.

Mertens fought back from a 3-0 deficit in the first set, only to lose a 3-0 lead in the tiebreaker by dropping seven consecutive points. She rebounded strongly in the second and third sets, winning 11 of her 13 first-service points in the final frame to secure the victory.

Chinese fourth seed Xinyu Wang defeated Australia’s Maya Joint 6-4, 6-2 to advance. She will face Switzerland’s Jil Teichman, who beat Australian Olivia Gadecki 6-4, 6-4.

Australia had a silver lining as Kimberly Birrell edged past American Hailey Baptiste in a marathon match lasting two hours and 50 minutes, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 7-5. Birrell impressively saved 9 of 11 break points while withstanding nine aces from Baptiste.

Blinkova Stuns Svitolina in Linz; Muchova Cruises to Quarterfinals

Russia’s Anna Blinkova pulled off an upset at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz, eliminating No. 2 seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-4, 6-4 in the Round of 16.

Blinkova capitalized on 7 of 14 break opportunities and saved 9 of 14 break points to send Svitolina packing. Meanwhile, top seed Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic had no trouble advancing, dispatching Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain 6-2, 6-3.

Fourth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia and fifth seed Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine both moved forward in straight sets. Croatia’s Petra Martic battled through a tough contest to eliminate No. 7 seed Elina Avanesyan of Armenia 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
