No. 6 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia wasted no time securing her first-round victory at the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open on Tuesday, defeating Sofia Kenin 6-3, 6-1 in just 59 minutes.
Pavlyuchenkova’s dominant serving made the difference as she won 80% of her service points and never faced a break point. The Russian broke Kenin four times in eight chances, leaving the American with little opportunity to mount a comeback.
Meanwhile, Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur pulled off a hard-fought upset against No. 7 seed Jelena Ostapenko, 7-6 (4), 7-5. Jabeur capitalized on six of 11 break points and took advantage of Ostapenko’s eight double faults to seal the victory.
