Tampa Bay Lightning Facing Elimination Today

Updated:

The Tampa Bay Lightning, who have been to three of the past four Stanley Cup Finals, face elimination today in their first-round playoff series against in-state rival, the Florida Panthers. The Tampa Bay Lightning have dropped the first three games of the series to Florida. The Panthers won a pair of 3-2 games in the first two and won 5-3 in Game 3 to take a 3-0 series lead.

What may save the Tampa Bay Lightning from elimination today is the fact that they are playing at home. They did lose Game 3 at home, but the Lightning did have one of the better home records in the NHL this season. The Tampa Bay Lightning were 25-11-5 at home during the regular season.

The Tampa Bay Lightning went 25-11-5 at Amalie Arena this season.

What’s interesting is that the Florida Panthers beat the Tampa Bay Lightning in two of three regular season games this year. Both of those games were in Tampa. Can the Lightning stave off elimination and force a Game 5 back in Miami? The Tampa Bay Lightning have one win against the Panthers this year and that came on March 16 in Miami.

History Not With Tampa Bay Lightning

In the history of the Stanley Cup playoffs, there have been 209 occurrences of teams facing a 3-0 deficit in a seven-game series. Only four times has the team down 3-0 come back to win. The Tampa Bay Lightning have never done it.

The most recent occurrence came in 2014 in the Western Conference’s first round. The Los Angeles Kings trailed the San Jose Sharks 3-0. The Kings would go on to win four straight and take the series from the Sharks. Then, they would go on to win the Stanley Cup.

The 2014 Kings were the last team to come back from a 3-0 deficit in an NHL playoff series.

Could the Tampa Bay Lightning join the Kings, Flyers, Islanders, and Maple Leafs as the only teams to come back from a 3-0 deficit?
