MLB Spring Training: Skubal Earns First Win, Phillies Dominate Orioles

Skubal Secures First Spring Training Victory

Reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal notched his first win of spring training as the Detroit Tigers edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3 in Lakeland, Fla. Skubal (1-0) pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four and walking one. His spring ERA now sits at 2.16 over three starts spanning 8 1/3 innings.

The Pirates’ Tommy Pham homered off Skubal in the third inning, but Detroit responded with a four-run rally in the bottom half, highlighted by Javier Báez’s three-run homer.

Orioles Split, Phillies Dominate

In Sarasota, Fla., the Baltimore Orioles took a split-squad win over the Minnesota Twins, 4-3, thanks to Tomoyuki Sugano’s perfect three-inning start with five strikeouts. All of Minnesota’s runs came via solo homers from Matt Wallner, Edouard Julien, and Brooks Lee.

Meanwhile, the Phillies had a field day in Clearwater, crushing Baltimore’s other split squad 12-2. Edmundo Sosa powered Philadelphia with a homer and a double, while Bryce Harper’s two-run single fueled a three-run third inning. Coby Mayo’s RBI double was a rare highlight for the Orioles.
