ATP roundup: Carlos Alcaraz eases into Rotterdam semis

Carlos Alcaraz and Hubert Hurkacz Set for Semifinal Clash at ABN AMRO Open

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz and No. 8 seed Hubert Hurkacz will square off in the ABN AMRO Open semifinals on Saturday after both secured victories on Friday in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Alcaraz, ranked No. 3 in the world, made quick work of countryman Pedro Martinez, winning 6-2, 6-1. The Spaniard dominated on serve, firing seven aces to none for Martinez and winning 91 percent (21 of 23) of his first-serve points.

Hurkacz, ranked No. 21, had a grueling 2-hour, 30-minute battle against No. 4 seed Andrey Rublev of Russia. The Polish star prevailed 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4, relying on his powerful serve to land 17 aces to Rublev’s five while saving four of five break points.

The other Saturday semifinal will feature No. 3 seed Alex de Minaur of Australia against Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci.

De Minaur, ranked No. 8, defeated Germany’s Daniel Altmaier, 6-1, 6-4, without hitting a single ace. However, he saved four of five break points and won 77 percent (20 of 26) of his first-serve points.

Bellucci, ranked No. 92, continued his impressive Cinderella run with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 6 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece. He fired five aces and saved all four break points he faced, advancing to his first-ever ATP Tour semifinal.

Casper Ruud Reaches Dallas Open Semifinals as Yoshihito Nishioka Retires

No. 2 seed Casper Ruud advanced to his first Dallas Open semifinal after Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka retired due to a shoulder injury.

Ruud, ranked No. 5 in the world, was leading 7-5, 3-2 when Nishioka was forced to halt play.

Ruud will face Spain’s Jaume Munar in the semifinals after Munar upset No. 8 seed Matteo Arnaldi of Italy 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Munar showed resilience, saving four of five break points and winning 75 percent (43 of 57) of his first-serve points, including an impressive 93 percent (14 of 15) in the third set.

Meanwhile, two more quarterfinal matches were scheduled for Friday night:

Defending champion Tommy Paul (No. 3 seed) vs. fellow American Reilly Opelka

No. 6 seed Tomas Machac (Czech Republic) vs. Canada’s Denis Shapovalov

Both matches will determine the final two spots in the semifinals.
