• Senegal (+550) – Having triumphed at the previous AFCON, the Lions of Teranga are ready to defend their crown. Led by ex-Liverpool forward Sadio Mane, Senegal’s roster is stacked with big-name players, including Nicolas Jackson, Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy and Pape Sarr. 

• Ivory Coast (+600) – As the host nation, Ivory Coast fans expect their team to add to the AFCON triumphs of 1992 and 2015. The country’s golden generation is in the past, but players like Sebastien Haller, Franck Kessie and Simon Adingra could bring them back on home soil. 

• Morocco (+600) – Morocco was the surprise package of the 2022 World Cup, as the Atlas Lions became the first African nation to reach the semifinals of soccer’s biggest tournament. As a result, Walid Regragui’s men are expected to challenge for the trophy in Ivory Coast. 

• Egypt (+650) – No team has won more AFCON titles than Egypt’s seven, although the Pharaohs last triumphed back in 2010. As always, the nation will pin its hopes on Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah, who has scored 51 goals in 91 international appearances. 

Potential AFCON Sleepers to Consider 

• Cameroon (+1600) – Only Egypt has won more AFCON titles than Cameroon’s five over the years. After triumphing in 2017, the Indomitable Lions clinched third place last time around. Ultimately, Cameroon knows what it takes to reach the latter stages, making odds of +1600 look very attractive. 

• Burkina Faso (+4000) – Burkina Faso stunned everyone by reaching the semifinals last time around. Having achieved three top-four finishes in the previous five editions of the tournament, the Stallions could make a mockery of their +4000 price if they play their cards right.

Having assessed the options, I’m backing Egypt to clinch a record-extending eighth AFCON title. The Pharaohs achieved three straight titles between 2006 and 2010 before reaching the final in 2017 and 2021. At the end of the day, Egypt always rises to the occasion. 

Outright Winner Best Bet: Egypt (+650) 

I’m also backing an Egyptian to finish as the top goalscorer. Salah has been in unstoppable form for Liverpool this season, netting 18 goals in 27 games. On top of that, the Pharaohs captain has bagged eight goals in his last 10 appearances for his country.
