2027 MLB Draft Predictions

The 2027 MLB Draft class already has a legitimate No. 1 pick race, and the gap between the leading high school prospect and the best college players is small enough to make the next baseball season especially important.

Dylan Seward enters the cycle at the top of the board. The switch hitting shortstop combines elite speed, contact ability and a realistic chance to remain at shortstop professionally. MLB Pipeline placed Seward first in its initial 2027 mock draft, and his performance at the MLB High School All American Game reinforced the athletic traits behind that projection.

Florida infielder Brendan Lawson presents the strongest college challenge. Arizona State outfielder Landon Hairston already owns one of the most impressive offensive résumés in the class, while Mississippi State left hander Tomas Valincius and Wake Forest right hander Chris Levonas give teams multiple experienced college pitching options.

The current prediction is Seward to become the No. 1 overall pick. Lawson is the safer college alternative, Hairston has the offensive production to move into the top spot, and Valincius could become the first pitcher selected if his command and bat missing ability carry into another season.

The MLB betting hub provides the broader league context as the 2026 standings eventually determine which teams enter the draft lottery and which organizations will be positioned near the top of the order.

2027 MLB Draft Information and What Is Already Known

The 2026 MLB Draft finished with 20 rounds and 613 selections, but it would be premature to assume every part of that structure will remain unchanged for 2027. MLB's current collective bargaining agreement runs through the 2026 season and expires on December 1, while negotiations over a new agreement are already underway.

The amateur draft is one of the issues being negotiated.

MLB has proposed a 12 round domestic draft with hard slotting, expanded ability to trade selections and a reduction in the number of lottery picks from six to four. The MLBPA has proposed retaining a 20 round draft, maintaining high school eligibility, expanding college eligibility and moving the event to June. These remain proposals rather than confirmed 2027 rules.

That uncertainty matters for a draft prediction article because the structure can affect more than the date. Changes to lottery rules, bonus pools, draft pick trading or eligibility could influence which teams select where and which players are actually available.

The player evaluation is already underway, however. MLB Pipeline has begun tracking the 2027 class, and the annual high school showcase in August featured 40 players from the 2027 graduating class.

2027 MLB Draft Top Prospects

The early board contains a useful balance of premium shortstops, proven college hitters and high ceiling pitchers.

2Landon HairstonArizona State
3Tomas ValinciusMississippi State
4Chris LevonasWake Forest
5Gavin KellyWest Virginia
6Tague DavisLouisville
7Dax WhitneyOregon State

This ranking differs slightly from simply copying an early mock draft because it weighs current production, positional value, medical risk and the development questions each prospect needs to answer. MLB Pipeline's first mock placed Seward, Lawson, Valincius and Hairston within the first four selections, which illustrates how close the top group already appears.

Dax Whitney would rank considerably higher on pure pitching talent. His elbow surgery creates enough uncertainty to move him down an August board, especially because MLB Pipeline considers it unlikely that he will pitch competitively during the 2027 season.

Dylan Seward Leads the No. 1 Pick Race

Seward has the most valuable combination of tools at the top of the high school class.

He is a switch hitter with elite speed, strong bat to ball ability and enough range and instincts to remain at shortstop. MLB Pipeline describes him as a double plus runner and placed him first in its initial 2027 mock.

The summer showcase added another encouraging data point.

Seward reached base twice on walks during the MLB High School All American Game, including a nine pitch plate appearance in the first inning, and immediately stole second base. His junior season at Norco included a .436 average, a 1.246 OPS and 17 stolen bases in 33 games.

That profile gives him several ways to remain valuable even if the power does not develop immediately.

A high school shortstop who can make contact, create value on the bases and stay in the middle of the diamond does not need to become a 30 home run hitter to justify a premium selection. The path to No. 1 becomes even stronger if additional strength turns some of his contact into more extra base damage.

The limitation is the same one attached to almost every prep player this far from the draft. Teams still need another full season of evidence against high level pitching.

Seward is the current prediction at No. 1, but he does not have enough separation for the top spot to be considered secure.

Brendan Lawson Is the Strongest College Challenger

Lawson offers something very different from Seward.

The Florida infielder already has two seasons of college baseball behind him and produced 19 home runs with a .699 slugging percentage as a sophomore. He was originally drafted in the 19th round out of high school but followed through on his commitment to Florida.

The offensive development is the reason his stock has changed so dramatically.

Lawson was already viewed as a quality hitter, but increased power changes the ceiling. If he combines another strong offensive season with improved defensive certainty, an organization picking first may view the college track record as less risky than selecting a high school player.

Shortstop is the question.

MLB Pipeline notes that Lawson currently plays shortstop for Florida but could eventually move to third base professionally.

That distinction matters near the top of a draft. A middle infielder with impact offensive production carries more positional value than a corner player with the same bat.

Lawson currently ranks second because the offensive résumé is strong enough to challenge Seward. If he proves he can remain at short or becomes one of college baseball's most dominant hitters, first overall becomes realistic.

Landon Hairston Has the Best Current Offensive Résumé

Hairston's 2026 season places him firmly inside the No. 1 conversation.

The Arizona State outfielder hit .400 with a .509 on base percentage and .860 slugging percentage as a sophomore. He added 28 home runs, 11 stolen bases and finished with more walks than strikeouts while becoming a Golden Spikes Award finalist.

That is the cleanest offensive production among the current top prospects.

The walk to strikeout relationship is particularly valuable because it suggests the power was not created by selling out for damage on every swing. A hitter who can combine patience, contact and power gives evaluators fewer offensive weaknesses to solve.

The question is positional value.

A shortstop such as Seward or Lawson can receive additional draft credit because of the defensive position. Hairston needs the bat to be sufficiently superior that the position becomes secondary.

Another season near his 2026 production would do exactly that.

Hairston currently ranks third, but he may have the most direct path to becoming the top college hitter. If he again approaches a .400 average with elite power and plate discipline, the No. 1 debate becomes much more difficult.

Tomas Valincius Leads the College Pitching Conversation

Valincius is the pitcher closest to the top of the current board without the medical uncertainty surrounding Whitney.

After transferring from Virginia to Mississippi State, the left hander produced 12.3 strikeouts per nine innings against only 1.8 walks per nine in 2026. His arsenal includes a fastball around 95 mph, a mid 80s slider and a changeup. MLB Pipeline reported a 48 percent miss rate on the slider.

That strikeout to walk combination is the strongest part of the profile.

Velocity attracts attention, but professional projection becomes much more convincing when a pitcher can generate misses without giving away excessive free passes. Valincius has already shown that combination against major college competition.

The challenge is draft history and risk.

Pitchers generally carry more injury uncertainty than position players, and a team holding the No. 1 selection may prefer an everyday shortstop or impact hitter unless the pitcher clearly separates himself.

Valincius does not currently have that separation.

He does have a realistic path to becoming the first pitcher drafted, and a dominant 2027 season could move him into the overall top pick conversation.

Chris Levonas Could Challenge for the First Pitcher Selected

Levonas gives the class another college starter with top of the rotation traits.

The Brewers selected him 67th overall in 2024, but he chose Wake Forest instead of signing. During his sophomore season he went 10 and 3 with a 2.82 ERA, recorded 116 strikeouts against 33 walks and held opponents to a .171 batting average. His fastball sat around 97 mph.

That creates a useful comparison with Valincius.

Valincius currently has the stronger command indicators. Levonas brings more fastball velocity and already has an extensive college starting résumé.

The 2027 season should clarify which profile teams prefer.

If Levonas reduces the walks while maintaining the strikeouts and velocity, the difference between the two arms can disappear quickly.

Dax Whitney Is the Draft's Biggest Medical Wild Card

Whitney might have been the most talented college pitcher in the class entering the cycle.

His fastball has reached 101 mph, and MLB Pipeline credits him with three quality secondary pitches through the slider, curveball and changeup. The problem is that a torn UCL required a hybrid Tommy John and internal brace procedure.

MLB Pipeline considers it unlikely that Whitney will pitch competitively in 2027, although he could potentially throw bullpen sessions for teams before the draft.

That makes his evaluation unusually difficult.

If the medical information is positive and the pre draft throwing sessions show that the arsenal has returned, a team may still view Whitney as one of the highest upside pitchers available. If the recovery is slower or evaluators have concerns about his workload, he could fall well below where the pure stuff would normally place him.

Whitney is not a No. 1 prediction today because too much of the projection depends on recovery rather than game performance.

Gavin Kelly and Tague Davis Add More College Power

The college hitting class is deeper than Lawson and Hairston.

Gavin Kelly helped West Virginia reach the College World Series while hitting .382 with a .477 on base percentage and .725 slugging percentage. He hit 19 home runs and has played catcher, second base and the outfield, giving teams an unusual combination of offensive production and defensive versatility.

Tague Davis brings significantly more raw power.

The Louisville first baseman led Division I with 34 home runs in 2026 while hitting .355 with a .443 on base percentage and .848 slugging percentage. MLB Pipeline notes that swing and miss remains part of the evaluation, which is especially important for a player whose defensive value is concentrated at a corner position.

Both can climb.

Kelly has a particularly interesting route because the defensive position is not yet fixed. If he demonstrates that he can catch regularly while maintaining the bat, his positional value changes considerably.

Davis needs to show that the power will continue against better pitching without an excessive strikeout cost.

The High School Class Extends Beyond Dylan Seward

Seward is not the only high school player capable of entering the first several selections.

Connor Salerno is the leading prep left hander on MLB Pipeline's early board. He works with a mid 90s fastball, a breaking ball and a changeup while showing the strike throwing ability teams want from a young pitcher.

Chase Fuller brings two way ability as a shortstop and pitcher, although evaluators currently appear to prefer the athleticism and right handed swing as a position player.

Striker Pence may have the most eye catching velocity in the prep group. He reclassified into the 2027 class and reached 100.7 mph during the High School All American Game, throwing the 15 fastest pitches of the showcase.

Those players matter because prep rankings can change quickly between August and the following spring. One major velocity jump or a hitter proving he can handle elite pitching can move a prospect from the middle of the first round into the top five.

Which MLB Teams Could Pick Near the Top?

The draft order is far from settled, but the current standings identify which clubs are closest to the bottom of MLB.

As of August 19, the Athletics have the worst record at 49 and 77. The Angels and Rockies are both 50 and 76, followed by the Giants at 51 and 74, the Royals at 53 and 74 and the Mets at 57 and 70.

That does not make any of those teams the automatic holder of the No. 1 selection.

The draft lottery determines the top of the first round under the current system. MLB Pipeline also notes that San Francisco cannot pick higher than 10th in the 2027 draft under the existing lottery restrictions, and Pittsburgh faces the same limitation after receiving another top six selection in 2026.

The new collective bargaining agreement creates another layer of uncertainty because both sides have proposed changes affecting the draft. Until the regular season ends and the labor rules are finalized, assigning Seward or Lawson to a specific franchise would create more false precision than useful analysis.

The MLB team directory becomes more relevant after the order is established and prospect value can be compared with actual organizational needs.

Team Need Should Not Control the Early Draft Rankings

The first overall prediction should begin with talent rather than trying to solve the needs of an unknown team.

Seward currently leads because of his combination of contact, speed and defensive value. Lawson provides an advanced college bat with developing power. Hairston may simply hit enough to make the position less important. Valincius offers a strong college pitching profile with both strikeouts and command.

Once the lottery is complete, the team fit conversation becomes more useful.

An organization already deep in young shortstops can still select Seward if it believes he is clearly the best player available. Drafting for immediate Major League need is particularly risky because even advanced prospects usually require development time.

The better approach is to determine the strongest player and then use organizational context as a secondary factor when the evaluations are close.

2027 MLB Draft Betting Outlook

There is no reliable No. 1 pick betting market being used for this article.

That makes the correct position monitor rather than forcing a wager.

If Seward eventually opens as a heavy favorite, the important question will be whether his implied probability is justified by the gap between him and the college class. A prospect can be the most likely selection while still being a poor futures bet if the price assumes too much certainty.

Lawson is the first alternative worth evaluating once odds become available. His college track record provides a credible route to No. 1 without requiring Seward to fail.

Hairston could become even more interesting if a market focuses heavily on shortstops while underpricing elite college offensive production.

The Bettors Handbook provides the useful framework here. Futures should be judged by the probability implied by the price rather than simply choosing the prospect ranked first.

Readers less familiar with baseball futures can also use the MLB betting guide for broader context on futures pricing and baseball markets.

What Will Change the 2027 MLB Draft Board

The college season will provide the biggest volume of new information.

Lawson needs to show that the power growth continues and clarify his defensive future. Hairston has to prove that his remarkable 2026 offensive production is sustainable. Valincius and Levonas will be judged heavily on strike throwing, velocity and durability.

Seward's spring matters for a different reason.

The high school shortstop already has elite speed and contact ability. Scouts will be looking for evidence that the offensive impact is becoming louder without sacrificing the approach that currently makes him appealing. His junior season and summer showcase already established the baseline.

Whitney's medical progression may create the largest single ranking swing.

A healthy pre draft throwing program could move him back toward the top group. An incomplete recovery would push teams toward the healthier college arms.

The labor negotiations matter too. Until the next collective bargaining agreement resolves the competing proposals around round count, eligibility, draft timing and lottery structure, some basic 2027 draft information remains unsettled.

2027 MLB Draft Predictions

Dylan Seward is the current prediction to become the No. 1 overall pick.

The switch hitting shortstop offers premium speed, advanced bat to ball ability and a realistic chance to remain at one of baseball's most valuable defensive positions. The summer showcase did nothing to weaken that evaluation, and MLB Pipeline continues to identify him as a potential first overall selection.

Brendan Lawson ranks second because his combination of college performance and improving power provides the strongest lower risk alternative. Another 20 home run type season at Florida would make the gap at the top extremely small.

Landon Hairston ranks third and could become the best pure hitter in the class. A .400/.509/.860 sophomore line with 28 home runs already provides a level of offensive performance that cannot be treated as secondary simply because he plays the outfield.

Tomas Valincius is the leading pitcher on the current board because of his combination of strikeouts, command and a three pitch arsenal. Chris Levonas follows closely and could pass him with improved control.

The current top pick prediction is therefore Seward, but this class does not have enough separation for an August ranking to be considered permanent.

2027 MLB Draft Final Verdict

The 2027 MLB Draft begins with Dylan Seward in front, Brendan Lawson and Landon Hairston applying pressure from the college hitting side, and Tomas Valincius leading a strong group of pitchers.

Seward has the best current No. 1 profile because shortstop defense, elite speed and advanced contact give him multiple paths to Major League value. The main development question is whether enough power appears during his senior season to separate him further from the college hitters.

Lawson is the strongest challenger because his 19 home run sophomore season established legitimate impact potential. Hairston has the most impressive offensive numbers of the group, and another dominant season could make him impossible to keep outside the first pick discussion.

Valincius is the pitcher most likely to enter that conversation, while Whitney remains the highest variance name because his stuff belongs near the top but his elbow recovery creates significant uncertainty.

There is no recommended draft wager yet because no trustworthy market is being used. The useful action is to monitor Seward's development, Lawson and Hairston's college production, the health of the top pitchers and the final draft rules that emerge from collective bargaining.

The prediction today is Dylan Seward at No. 1, Brendan Lawson as the closest challenger and Landon Hairston as the hitter most capable of changing the order.
