2023 Open Championship Picks & Odds

It’s time for the final major of the PGA season and we have identified the best 2023 Open Championship picks. The 151st British Open will be hosted at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England.

Scottie Scheffler (+700) and Rory McIlroy (+800) lead the outright winners market.

There’s no recent course form to analyze this week. The last time the Open Championship was hosted at Royal Liverpool was in 2014 when McIlroy won, but he hasn’t won a PGA major since. Prior to 2014, the last winner of the Open Championship on this golf course was Tiger Woods in 2006.

2023 Scottish Open Results

McIlroy (+900) won last week at the 2023 Scottish Open by one stroke after going birdie-birdie to finish his final round. Robert MacIntyre (+9000) shot a final round of -6 and almost held off McIlroy. Did you see my 2023 Scottish Open picks?

Alex Smalley missed the cut and cost me. I had Tommy Fleetwood to win and he was in contention, but he finished T6 after a final round of +2. I hit on Thomas Detry to make the cut to recover some losses.

There are a lot more golf betting markets to target for my 2023 Open Championship picks this week.

2023 British Open Preview

When: Thursday, July 20th – Sunday, July 23rd 2023

Where: Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England

TV: NBC, USA Network and Peacock

Field: 156 Golfers (Cut: top 70 and ties)

Purse: $16,500,000 (Winner gets $3,000,000)

Royal Liverpool has undergone some recent changes to the course. Most notably, there’s a new 17th hole (par 3 / 139 yards) with an elevated green and bunkers everywhere. There were also major changes to several other holes, including the 10th, which went from a 532-yard par 5 to 507-yard par 4.

The last time the Open was played at Hoylake in 2014, the top finishers were McIlroy (-17), Rickie Fowler (-15), Sergio Garcia (-15), Jim Furyk (-13), Adam Scott (-12) and Marc Leishman (-12).

Royal Liverpool Course Information

  • Par: 71 / Yards: 7,383
  • Greens: Bent-Fescue Turfgrass / Fairways: Fescue / Rough: Fescue (Tall)
  • Par 3s: 4 / Par 4s: 11 / Par 5s: 3

Hoylake is a traditional links course and tee times play a big role due to the winds. There are 81 bunkers scattered around the golf course and lots of Out of Bounds sections that result in a one shot penalty. With that being said, golfers will need to be accurate off the tee to remain in contention.

With the tall rough and deep bunkers, hitting fairways is important. The winner this week will also need to have their putter working well. Converting birdies and avoiding bogeys is how McIlroy and Woods both won here previously. With 11 par 4s this year, par 4 scoring will be more important than before.

Expert Open Championship Picks for 2023

Like last week, Scheffler and McIlroy are the favorites to win the Open.

Scheffler is on an incredible run, finishing T5 or better in his last seven tournaments. He has been T3 or better in five of his last six outings. He ranks 1st in SG: Total, SG: Off the Tee, GIR % and par 4 scoring average. He also ranks 6th in scrambling from the rough and 39th in driving accuracy.

McIlroy earned his second win of the season at the Scottish Open. He has finished T9 or better in his last six tournaments. He ranks 2nd in SG: Off the Tee, 8th in SG: Approach the Green and 9th in par 4 scoring average. These two will be the most popular 2023 Open Championship picks this week.

Rory has form at peak with Scottish Open win

There will be several LIV golfers competing this week. Brooks Koepka (+1800), Cameron Smith (+2000) and Dustin Johnson (+3000) will all be in attendance. Smith is coming off a win at LIV Golf London in his last tournament and he’s also the defending champion of the British Open.

Top Contenders to Win the 2023 British Open

With almost all of the world’s best golfers competing, narrowing the field down is tough. Some of the guys everyone should look at are Jon Rahm (+1300), Viktor Hovland (+2200) and Jordan Spieth (+3000).

Two contenders I’ll be looking to target are Tyrell Hatton (+2500) and Tom Kim (+6000).

Hatton just finished T6 at the Scottish Open. He has finished T15 or better in six of his last seven starts. He ranks 3rd in SG: Total, 10th in SG: Off the Tee, 5th in par 4 scoring average and 19th in scrambling.

Kim was also T6 at the Scottish Open and he was T8 at the U.S. Open in June. Kim ranks 6th in driving accuracy, 7th in GIR %, 15th in par 4 scoring average and 10th in SG: Approach the Green.

Top Longshots to Win the 2023 British Open

Some of the top longshots I have my eye on are Brian Harman (+9000) and Denny McCarthy (+9000). If you want to go further down the list of odds, Chris Kirk (+15000) is worth targeting in H2H matchups.

I was on McCarthy to win the John Deere Classic and he finished T6. He was T7 at the Travelers and he has now finished T7 or better in three of his last four PGA tournaments. McCarthy ranks 16th in SG: Total, 3rd in SG: Putting, 57th in driving accuracy, 10th in scrambling and 3rd in par 4 scoring average.

Harman started the season in form, had a rough patch and has seemingly found his form again. Harman has finished T2, T9 and T12 in his last three golf tournaments. He ranks 42nd in SG: Total, 14th in driving accuracy, 30th in GIR %, 7th in scrambling and 9th in par 4 scoring average.

2023 Open Championship Picks – Outright Winner

Hatton has been near the top of the leaderboard all season, but hasn’t won yet. He has seven finishes of T6 or better this season, including a 2nd at the PGA Championship. He was T11 in last year’s Open.

2023 Open Championship Picks – Top 10 Finish

With the form Scheffler’s in, I’m backing him to finish in the top 10. Scheffler has finished in the top 10 in 15 of the 19 events he has played this season. He was T3 at the Scottish Open last week.

I’ll be betting on Scheffler to finish top 10, along with two other golfers. You’ll need to sign-in to Sports Hub to access all three of my Open Championship picks for this golf betting market.

2023 British Open Predictions – Top Debutant

We’re getting a great price for this British Open betting market. McCarthy is paying +600 to be the top debutant in this year’s PGA major tournament.

He’s in great form, but will definitely be tested by other golfers making their Open debut, including Rasmus Hojgaard, Adam Schenk and Nick Taylor.

Top Debutant Best Bet: Denny McCarthy (+600)

I also have Open Championship picks for the top Australian, top Korean and top South American, but you’ll need to log-in to Sports Hub and search for “SWJ Sports” to access all of my plays. In total, I have nine 2023 British Open picks and I’m banking on turning a profit for our members.
