Euro 2024 Group Stage Predictions

The European club soccer season is over, but the final showpiece event is on the schedule this weekend – the UEFA Champions League final. Make sure that you take a look at our preview. 

However, now it’s time to get into our Euro 2024 group stage predictions as we start to prepare for Europe’s premier international soccer tournament. Who will be the group winners? Who can earn a spot in the knockouts as runners-up? Let’s get into it! 

Euro 2024 – Tournament Format 

Before we take a look at our Euro 2024 group stage predictions, we need to understand how the tournament will work. A total of 24 teams will feature at Euro 2024 in Germany this summer. They all earned their spot through qualification, despite Germany as they qualified automatically as the host nation.

Here is a list of all 24 European nations that will be featuring at Euro 2024: 

All of the above 24 teams have already been drawn into six groups of four for the Euro 2024 finals. Each team was seeded into four different pots. The stronger nations (qualification group winners), such as Portugal, England and France, were placed into Pot 1. Germany were seeded into Pot 1 due to being the host nation. 

The runners-up during qualification and lower-ranked nations were all placed into the three remaining pots. A team from each pot was then drawn into each of the six groups to determine the Euro 2024 group stage. Below you can find all of the groups at Euro 2024: 

• Group A: Germany, Scotland, Hungary, Switzerland
• Group B: Spain, Croatia, Italy, Albania
• Group C: Slovenia, Denmark, Serbia, England 
• Group D: Poland, Netherlands, Austria, France
• Group E: Belgium, Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine
• Group F: Turkey, Georgia, Portugal, Czech Republic

The Euro 2024 group stage will use a round-robin format in order to determine the standings. Each team will play every other nation in their respective group once. The top two ranked teams from each group will earn qualification into the knockout rounds. 

There are also a further four spots up for grabs for the best ranked third-placed teams. That will ensure that a total of 16 teams will qualify for the knockout rounds, starting with the Round of 16. 

Euro 2020 Recap

Our Euro 2024 group stage predictions will be on their way soon, but first, we will have a quick recap at what happened at Euro 2020. Italy are the current defending champions after beating England on penalties in 2021. The tournament was delayed a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Theoretically, winning your group gives you a better chance at advancing further through the knockout rounds. This is because the group winners will be drawn against supposed weaker sides who only finished as runners-up or in third-place. 

Euro 2020 demonstrated that winning your group was important as Group A winners (Italy) and Group D winners (England) managed to reach the final. However, winning your group doesn’t necessarily mean success in the later stages. Group runners-up Denmark and Spain both managed to reach the semifinals, whilst group winners such as the Netherlands, Sweden and France were eliminated at the Round of 16. 

Euro 2024 Group Stage Predictions 

Now that we have gone through the tournament format and had a quick recap of the last tournament, it’s time to delve into our Euro 2024 group stage predictions.

The group stage will kick off one of the most anticipated international tournaments in European soccer as hundreds of thousands of fans will flock to Germany to watch some of the best players on the planet battle it out for the trophy. 

Equally, the competition represents a great opportunity for soccer bettors to place a number of exciting wagers. Today, we will be sharing with you our best Euro 2024 group stage picks! 

Group A – Group Winner Prediction

Teams: Germany, Scotland, Hungary, Switzerland

Tournament holders Die Mannschaft are expected to be the top team in Group A, and anything but qualification into the knockout rounds will be considered a huge failure. The Germans have struggled at major international tournaments of late, failing to get past the group stage in the last two successive World Cups. 

They underwhelmed at Euro 2020 too as they got knocked out at the Round of 16 stage by eventual finalists England. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann has been tasked with guiding Germany back to the top, and he will lean on the likes of Joshua Kimmich, Toni Kroos and Jamal Musiala to do so. With home advantage this summer, it’s hard to see Germany failing to get out of their group. 

Met by Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland in Group A, it is not expected to be the toughest of groups for Germany, and this will represent a great opportunity for their national team to get back on track. Back them to top Group A at the Euro 2024 group stage.

BEST BET: Germany (-250)

Group A – Group Runner Up Prediction

Having never advanced past the group stage at the Euros, Scotland are not expected to perform here. However, they did impress during qualification, finishing as runners-up in Group A, and beating Spain at Hampden Park. Could they advance past the Euro 2024 group stage?

It’s been some time since Hungary has seen any success at major international tournaments, but they did manage to reach the Round of 16 at Euro 2016. They topped Group G during qualification for Euro 2024, and they are also unbeaten over their past 14 international matches. With talented players such as Dominik Szoboszlai, Willi Orban and Barnabas Varga on the roster, they are dark horses to advance from Group A. They could be good value at -152 to qualify, especially with a potential third-placed qualification spot up for grabs. 

Nevertheless, the favorite to finish in second-place is Euro 2020 quarterfinalists Switzerland. They usually impress at the major international tournaments, and have made it out of the groups in each of their last five consecutive World Cup or Euros appearances. The Rossocrociati have an abundance of experienced players in their side such as Manuel Akanji, Granit Xhaka and Yann Sommer who should guide them into the Round of 16. 

BEST BET: Switzerland (-200 to qualify)

Group B – Group Winner Prediction

Teams: Spain, Croatia, Italy, Albania

In arguably the strongest group at the Euro 2024 group stage, Group B is expected to be highly competitive. We could see any one of Italy, Spain or Croatia topping the group, and all three nations have had past success at the Euros, especially Italy who are the current tournament holders. 

In our earlier Euro 2024 Predictions and Preview, we recommended to fade Croatia. That is because their team is aging, with Ivan Perisic, Luka Modric and Marcelo Brozovic all being over the age of 30 and far past their best. The Vatreni are without an out-and-out goalscorer as well, and underwhelmed during their qualifying campaign, finishing in second-place behind Turkey. 

Instead, the team we like the most to win Group B is Italy. The Azzurri can be hit and miss at international tournaments, but they did manage to win Euro 2020. Now with Luciano Spalletti at the helm, who led Napoli to the Scudetto last year, we can see him invoke a fast-paced playing style that can really make the most out of key players Nicolo Barella, Federico Chiesa and Gianluca Scamacca. Priced at +175 to win the group, we like their value to advance from the Euro 2024 group stage.

BEST BET: Italy (+175)

Group B – Group Runner Up Prediction

Like Croatia, Spain also has some issues up top. Their top goalscorer during the domestic season was Alvaro Morata who scored 15 goals for Atletico Madrid. It was a respectable amount, but the 31-year-old has always been considered an inconsistent finisher. With that being said, they have incredibly talented players throughout the team. 

Dani Carvajal, Rodri and Alejandro Grimaldo are all experienced winners who will help guide younger talents such as Pedri, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams. La Roja reached the semifinals of Euro 2020, and they are also the reigning UEFA Nations League champions. Nevertheless, their price of -125 to win Group B isn’t demonstrating the best value, and they are incredibly short to qualify at -1205. 

Could we see a historic performance by Albania during the Euro 2024 group stage? Their price of +2000 to win Group B shows just how big underdogs they are this summer, and they will be making just their second-ever appearance at the Euros in their history.  

With the four best third-placed teams earning a spot in the knockouts, the odds of Albania to qualify at +275 could be worth a longshot bet. It’s not worth backing Spain to qualify at -1205, even though we think they’ll finish as runners-up. Instead, back Croatia to qualify at -333 for a safer bet as we predict them to sneak into the Round of 16 via third-place. 

BEST BET: Croatia (-333 to qualify)

Group C – Group Winner Prediction

Teams: Slovenia, Denmark, Serbia, England 

Boasting a star-studded roster, as well as recent success at the World Cup and the Euros, England are red-hot favorites to top Group C at Euro 2024. Although the Three Lions haven’t won a major trophy since the 1966 World Cup, they managed to reach the semifinals and the quarterfinals of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, and the final of Euro 2020. Gareth Southgate will be desperate to end England’s heartache and finally deliver a trophy for the fans. First, though, they’ll need to get through the Euro 2024 group stage.

It may even be Southgate’s last chance at doing so, especially if he fails to win the tournament. With odds of +250 to go on and win the whole competition, England are one of the major heavyweights this summer. As a result, it’s no surprise to see them listed as -250 favorites to win a relatively easy Group C. Up against Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia, who all rank outside of the top 20 in the FIFA World Rankings, England are fortunate to have been drawn into a favorable group. 

Nevertheless, they can’t afford to get complacent, and tournament football often throws up surprises. Led by elite talents in Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, the Three Lions have one of, if not the best rosters across the entire tournament. With that being said, there are still some concerns about their defense which lacks top-level talent, but they should have more than enough to get past the Euro 2024 group stage.

BEST BET: England (-250)

Group C – Group Runner Up Prediction

The odds for England to win the group are pretty short but for good reason. Still, at +350 to win Group C, Denmark isn’t a bad shout. England have topped their group in only 50% of their last four attempts at the Euros, while Denmark reached the semifinals of Euro 2020. However, that was after finishing as runners-up of Group B. 

Either way, Denmark will be expected to qualify, and they have some experienced players throughout their squad in Andreas Christensen, Christian Eriksen, Simon Kjaer, Kasper Schmeichel and Yussuf Poulsen. They’ll be hoping to bounce back following a disappointing group stage exit at the 2022 World Cup. 

Serbia could be considered dark horses due to having some talented players in their side such as Dusan Vlahovic, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Filip Kostic. However, this is the first time they have qualified for the Euros since they were known as Yugoslavia in 2000, and they haven’t gotten past the group stage at the World Cup across any of their last four attempts. It looks difficult to see either them or Slovenia making it past the Euro 2024 group stage.

BEST BET: Denmark (-300 to qualify)

Group D – Group Winner Prediction 

Teams: Poland, Netherlands, Austria, France

Group D is set to offer yet another incredibly intriguing battle due to the quality of the teams. 2022 World Cup finalists France are the favorites to win the group, but the Netherlands will always pose a threat. Equally, weaker nations in Poland and Austria have strong players on their rosters and will be no pushovers. 

However, it would be quite the shock if France failed to win the group, and an even bigger upset if they failed to advance past the Euro 2024 group stage. They are the second favorites to win the whole tournament, currently priced at +350. Les Bleus have almost always been major heavyweights entering major international tournaments. With marquee player Kylian Mbappe leading the charge up top, they have reached the final of three of the last four major tournaments. 

Didier Deschamps is still in charge too, and he has managed to win one World Cup and earn a second-placed finish, whilst he has also secured a second-placed finish at the Euros during his time as France boss. The 55-year-old has a plethora of riches to choose from in his squad once again at Euro 2024. Nevertheless, France were surprisingly eliminated at the Round of 16 stage by Switzerland at Euro 2020. Tournament football will always provide great theater. 

BEST BET: France (-190)

Group D – Group Runner Up Prediction

The Netherlands are the second favorites to win Group D at +225. They are a nation that are usually tipped for success, but they have struggled at the Euros in recent times. Oranje didn’t make it past the group stage at the 2012 edition, whilst they failed to qualify for the Euro 2016 finals. Euro 2020 saw them exit at the Round of 16 at the hands of Czech Republic. 

However, they did impress in Qatar at the 2022 World Cup, and took winners Argentina to penalties at the quarterfinals. Boss Ronald Koeman has some exciting players at his disposal, such as Jeremie Frimpong, Xavi Simons and Cody Gakpo. Nevertheless, France were by far the better side during qualification, with the Dutch finishing in second-place in Group B. 

Poland and Austria could certainly cause some upsets during the Euro 2024 group stage, and they have the quality throughout their squads to do so. However, both nations have only ever advanced past the groups just once at the Euros throughout their history. Ralf Rangnick’s Austria enter the tournament in good form, though, having lost just one of their last 14 matches. 

Group D certainly appears to be one of the toughest groups to predict, and we could arguably see any one of the Netherlands, Poland or Austria qualifying from the group. However, we like the price of -110 for Austria to qualify the most. Poland struggled during qualification, and the Netherlands are very short to advance from the group stage at -500, meaning there isn’t much value. 

BEST BET: Austria (-110 to qualify)

Group E – Group Winner Prediction 

Teams: Belgium, Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine

Currently priced at -250 to win Group E, Domenico Tedesco’s Belgium are the odds-on favorites. The group is one of the more open and weaker ones at Euro 2024, and the Red Devils will be hoping to become back-to-back Euros group winners after topping Group B at Euro 2020. They have reached the quarterfinals in their last two successive attempts at the Euros, but disappointed at the 2022 World Cup, failing to make it past the group stage. 

After impressing during qualification, topping Group F without losing a single game, Belgium are on a 13-match unbeaten streak. A 2-2 draw against England at Wembley Stadium in their last matchup shows they can compete with the best, and Tedesco will be looking to execute the right blend of quality, experience and young talent in his starting eleven this summer. The likes of Jeremy Doku, Leandro Trossard and Kevin De Bruyne will be the key men. 

Ukraine are the second favorites to win Group E, but at the long price of +450. They needed to play in the playoffs to earn their spot at the Euro 2024 group stage after finishing in third-place of Group C during qualification. The squad does boast some high-level talent in Oleksandr Zinchenko, Artem Dovbyk and Mykhailo Mudryk, but they have only entered the knockout rounds of the Euros once, and have failed to qualify for the past four World Cups. 

BEST BET: Belgium (-250)

Group E – Group Runner Up Prediction

Due to the weakness of the rest of the group, we could easily see Ukraine finish in second-place and get past the Euro 2024 group stage. However, they only managed to advance to the knockout rounds of Euro 2020 via third-place. Still, they did pick up an impressive 2-1 win after extra time in their Round of 16 tie against Sweden. This time around, they should have the upper hand over Slovakia and Romania. 

Romania will take confidence in the fact that they topped Group I during qualifying, coming out on top ahead of the likes of Switzerland and Israel. They only conceded five goals in ten matches as well, and could be a great value pick as dark horses. Tricolorii have suffered just one defeat over their past 13 games and should have good momentum heading into the competition. They have made it out of the groups at the Euros just once, however, across five attempts. 

With odds of +850 to win Group E, Slovakia are the biggest dogs here. They had a relatively easy qualifying group as they finished in second-place behind Euro 2016 winners Portugal, but they still managed to win seven of their ten games. They didn’t make it into the knockout rounds at Euro 2020, but they did reach the Round of 16 in 2016, finishing third in Group B.

Group F – Group Winner Prediction

Teams: Turkey, Georgia, Portugal, Czech Republic

We head into the final group now for our Euro 2024 group stage predictions, with Euro 2016 victors Portugal listed as -225 favorites to win the group. Veteran Cristiano Ronaldo is still in the squad, despite being aged 39.

Former Belgium boss Roberto Martinez will take the reins after Fernando Santos was sacked following a quarterfinal exit at the 2022 World Cup. It will be interesting to see if Martinez will continue to start Ronaldo after Santos had dropped the former Real Madrid man for the knockout rounds in Qatar. 

The Selecao mightily impressed during qualification, winning all ten matches, albeit was a poor group. They’ll be expected to advance from the group here, especially as group winners. However, we recommend fading them as their price of -225 doesn’t show great value, especially considering the rest of the group.

Group F – Group Runner Up Prediction 

Czech Republic and Turkey could both be labeled as dark horses ahead of the tournament, and both nations have had past success as underdogs in the past. The former has even reached the quarterfinals in two of the last three Euros, but they needed to advance to the knockouts via third-place at Euro 2020. 

Meanwhile, Turkey topped a tough qualifying group that also contained Croatia and Wales. The Crescent Stars have recorded some impressive wins of late, defeating Croatia 1-0 last October before going on to beat Germany 3-2 in a friendly in November. There will be some concerns though about their vehement 6-1 loss against Austria back in March.

Georgia will be featuring in their first-ever major tournament this summer and thus are big underdogs at +1350 to win the group. Star man Kvicha Kvaratskhelia will be dreaming of delivering a monumental performance, and they will likely have a fearless attitude that could bode well for them here to advance from the Euro 2024 group stage.
