Let’s take a look at our FedEx Championship picks! The FedEx St. Jude Championship starts this Thursday as the 2023 PGA TOUR Playoffs get underway. The 2023 Wyndham Championship concluded the 2022/23 regular season of the PGA TOUR and gave golfers their final opportunity to qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

The playoff format has seen some changes. That means that the field has been cut down from 125 to 70 players. A few notable golfers have missed out on the playoffs as a result, including the likes of Adam Scott, Justin Thomas and Shane Lowry.

2023 Wyndham Championship Results

Last week saw the 2023 Wyndham Championship take place as Lucas Glover claimed his fifth PGA TOUR title with the victory. He was priced at +6000 before the start of the tournament so was an unexpected winner. He managed to get the victory with a score of -20, finishing the final day -2. Russell Henley and An Byeong-hun tied in second with a score of -18.

Our 2023 Wyndham Championship picks didn’t hit last week, but go see what we had to say. Hopefully we can earn some nice profits from our FedEx Championship picks. You can directly access my picks at my personal handicapper profile page, Ashlee Kiddell.

2023 FedEx St. Jude Championship Preview

When: Thursday August 10th – Sunday August 13th, 2023

Where: TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee

TV: CBS / Golf Channel

Field: 70 Golfers (No players to be cut)

Purse: $20,000,000 (Winner gets $3,600,000)

The St. Jude Championship, previously known as The Northern Trust and The Barclays, has signalled the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs since 2007. Since the 2021/22 season, the tournament has been played at TPC Southwind.

The top 50 players in the FedEx Cup standings will qualify for the BMW Championship after the FedEx St. Jude Championship has been concluded.

Last year was the first time the event was recognized as the FedEx St. Jude Championship as Will Zalatoris was crowned the winner (-15). That was the first time that TPC Southwind became the host of the first round of the playoffs.

The event has ended with a playoff on each of its last two occasions. Zalatoris beat Sepp Straka in 2022, before Tony Finau (-20) defeated Cameron Smith in 2021. The 2021 St. Jude Championship was known as the Northern Trust and was played at Liberty National.

TPC Southwind Course Information

Par: 70 / Yards: 7,244

Greens: Champion Bermuda grass / Fairways: Zoysia (Manila grass) / Rough: Bermuda grass

Par 3s: 4 / Par 4s: 12 / Par 5s: 2

The 70 par course is considered one of the more demanding courses on the PGA TOUR schedule. It was designed by Ron Richard, alongside PGA TOUR players Hubert Green and Fuzzy Zoeller. It was ranked ninth out of 51 in terms of course difficulty on the PGA TOUR in 2011.

Southwind course is known for its variety and has many difficult holes for pros. Some of the most notable holes are the 11th, 14th and the 18th.

The 11th hole (par 3, 165 yards) looks to replicate the famous 17th at TPC Sawgrass. It features an Island Green by which players will need to use a short iron over the water.

The 14th is considered one of the most challenging par-3 holes on the PGA TOUR. It is 231 yards as players look to navigate the narrow green. It plays over a water hazard that is placed in front and to the right of the green.

The final hole is a 461-yard, par-4. It also features a water hazard that is placed down the left side of the fairway.

Expert FedEx Championship Picks for 2023

The current favorite for the FedEx Championship is Scottie Scheffler (+550). His last tournament win this season came in The Players Championship back in March. He also won the WM Phoenix Open in February.

Scheffler finished T23 at the Open Championship which was his worst finish since October of last year. Nevertheless, he has still managed to secure a top-25 finish in his last 18 consecutive attempts.

He also leads the way in SG: Total, SG: Tee-to-Green, SG: Off-the-Tee and SG: Approach the Green. That’s why he’s the favorite and will be very popular for FedEx Championship picks.

Next up we have defending FedEx Cup champion Rory McIlroy (+850), followed by Jon Rahm (+850). Rahm tied second at the Open Championship and is currently leading the way atop the FedEx Cup standings. McIlroy tied sixth at the Open and also won the Genesis Scottish Open last month.

All three top contenders look to be in good form and will be tough to beat. They will all be well backed FedEx Championship picks.

Top Contenders to Win the 2023 FedEx Championship

Collin Morikawa (+1800) will be a good contender this week and is well liked in terms of FedEx Championship picks. He tied fifth at TPC Southwind last year, finishing four shots off the lead.

He missed the cut at the Open Championship so will be looking to bounce back here. He ranks tenth in SG: Total (1.582) and fourth in SG: Tee-to-Green (1.647). However, it is his putting that has let him down. Morikawa is ranked 106th in SG: Putting (-0.065).

Tyrell Hatton (+2300) is an exciting prospect. He finished T20 at the Open and has also managed seven top-10 finishes so far this season. He ranks fourth in SG: Total (2.087) and SG: Putting (0.699).

Xander Schauffele (+1550) finished T57 in last year’s St. Jude Championship. He finished T17 at the Open Championship and has recorded top 20 finishes across all of the majors this year. He ranks fifth in SG: Approach the Green and seventh in SG: Putting. However, he is yet to win a tournament this season and his price doesn’t look the best value. Recommendations are to fade Schauffele.

Longshots to Win the 2023 FedEx Championship

With shorter odds for the favorites in Scheffler, Rahm and McIlroy, some longshot FedEx Championship picks could be a good bet. Brian Harman (+4000) and J.T. Poston (+6500) look like good value picks, whilst last week’s Wyndham Championship winner Lucas Glover is at +8000.

Ranked 45th in the FedEx Cup standings, Poston has been in good form. He tied seventh at the 2023 Wyndham Championship and also finished T2 at the 3M Open. He finished T20 at TPC Southwind last year as well.

Open Championship winner Harman looks to be good value. He finished T3 in the 2022 St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind and has also managed top 12 finishes at the Genesis Scottish Open and Rocket Mortgage Classic. His form cannot be ignored.

Glover also finished in T3 in last year’s St. Jude Championship and is coming off the back of a Wyndham Championship victory. He is ranked 49th in the FedEx Cup standings and his rankings for SG: Total, SG: Tee-to-Green and SG: Off-the-Tee are all outside the top 30. Nevertheless, his recent form bodes well.

2023 FedEx Championship Picks – Top 5 Finish

I have selected two golfers to finish in the top 5 at the St. Jude Championship. Both are longer odds but have shown good form of late.

Poston has looked good at both the Wyndham Championship and in the 3M. He will be hoping to break into the top five at TPC Southwind this year after his T20 finish in August 2022.

I have also gone for Straka who took Zalatoris to a playoff in the St. Jude Championship last year. Straka finished T2 at the Open Championship last month as well.

Best Bets: J.T. Poston (+800) & Sepp Straka (+850)
