Humbert, Munar Score Major Upsets in Basel

Unseeded Ugo Humbert of France produced one of the biggest surprises of the week, toppling top seed Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday in the Swiss Indoors Basel Round of 16.

Humbert dominated on serve, winning 36 of 45 first-service points and saving both break points he faced. The victory marked another strong performance for the Frenchman, who has quietly built momentum this season with efficient baseline play and clutch serving.

Fritz wasn’t the only American to exit early. No. 2 seed Ben Shelton also fell, losing 6-3, 6-4 to Spain’s Jaume Munar, who fired 10 aces and didn’t commit a single double fault.

Meanwhile, Reilly Opelka continued his comeback run by edging Botic van de Zandschulp 7-6 (5), 6-7 (7), 6-3 in a marathon match lasting two hours and 40 minutes. Also advancing were No. 4 seed Casper Ruud, who beat Swiss wild card Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 7-6 (5), and Canadian seeds Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov, both winning in straight sets.

Sinner, Zverev Cruise; Medvedev Falls in Vienna

World No. 2 Jannik Sinner overcame a shaky performance to beat fellow Italian Flavio Cobolli 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the Erste Bank Open Round of 16 in Vienna, Austria.

Despite producing more unforced errors (15) than winners (12), Sinner advanced to a quarterfinal showdown with No. 8 seed Alexander Bublik, who dismissed Francisco Cerundolo 6-4, 6-2.

Two more Italians reached the last eight: No. 4 seed Lorenzo Musetti, who handled Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-3, 6-4, and Matteo Berrettini, who survived a three-set battle with Cameron Norrie 7-6 (6), 6-7 (9), 6-4 behind 16 aces and dominant serving.

In other action, No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev eased past Matteo Arnaldi 6-4, 6-4, while France’s Corentin Moutet stunned No. 6 seed Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (3), 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals.
