NWSL roundup: Marta’s PK enables Pride to snap Spirit’s long unbeaten streak

Marta’s second-half penalty sealed a key road win for the Orlando Pride, while Houston pulled off one of the season’s biggest upsets by ending Kansas City’s remarkable unbeaten streak.

Orlando Pride 3, Washington Spirit 2

Marta converted a penalty in the 72nd minute to lift Orlando to a 3-2 victory at Washington, snapping the Spirit’s 12-match unbeaten run.

The Pride’s Kerry Abello had a hand in both early goals — first scoring an own goal in the 35th minute, then equalizing three minutes later off a Haley McCutcheon header assist. Orlando later benefited from another own goal to retake the lead before Marta’s winner.

Sofia Cantore scored for Washington just before halftime, flicking home a backheel off Paige Metayer’s cross. The Spirit tied the game early in the second half but couldn’t capitalize on two late corner kicks.

Marta’s fourth goal of the season — and first since April — came after Kysha Sylla’s foul in the penalty area. The win extends Orlando’s unbeaten streak to four matches and solidifies its postseason standing at 11-8-6 (39 points).

Washington, missing star forward Trinity Rodman due to a sprained knee ligament, fell to 12-5-8 (44 points). The Spirit had defeated the Pride 1-0 in their earlier meeting on April 19.

Capper Insight: Orlando’s recent offensive consistency has pushed both teams’ total markets over in three of their past four matchups, while Marta’s penalty conversion keeps her anytime scorer prop alive entering the final stretch.

Houston Dash 1, Kansas City Current 0

Ryan Gareis scored her first career goal in the 69th minute, helping Houston deliver a stunning 1-0 win over league-leading Kansas City.

The result snapped the Current’s 17-match unbeaten streak and marked their first loss since May 2. Gareis, entering the match moments before her strike, connected on a feed from Yazmeen Ryan and slipped into the box unmarked to finish the chance.

Goalkeeper Jane Campbell preserved the win with six saves as the Dash ended a three-match winless stretch to move to 8-11-6 (30 points). Kansas City, now 20-3-2 (62 points), dominated the shot count 20-6 but couldn’t break through, with Claire Hutton’s first-half attempt hitting the post.

Capper Insight: Houston’s upset cashes as a +600 moneyline underdog, their second major home cover this season. Kansas City remains dominant overall, but fatigue may factor into closing lines entering the postseason.
