NHL roundup: Down 3-0, Caps storm past rival Canes in OT

This slate was packed with the exact stuff that breaks and makes tickets: blown three-goal leads, overtime daggers, shootout variance, and teams snapping skids with one big period. Washington’s comeback was the headline, but Toronto finally ended a skid in a shootout, Ottawa got Ullmark back with a clean win, and Minnesota ran Edmonton over to close the night.

Top Takeaways

  • Washington’s 3-0 comeback is the definition of game script risk. Even a team that looks in control can lose on one steady push and a late tying shot.
  • Shootouts and overtime kept deciding results. Leafs-Canucks and Kings-Flyers are reminders that one attempt or one clean look can flip everything.
  • Colorado’s 5-0 win is the opposite: no drama, just dominance, plus MacKinnon hitting 40 first. Those are the games where live markets never really reopen.
  • Ottawa getting Linus Ullmark back and winning is a major goaltending note for future spots, especially when injuries are already a theme across the league.
  • Calgary winning on a short-handed goal is a special-teams swing that matters. Those are the plays that move totals and wipe out “safe” late positions.
  • Minnesota’s 7-3 result wasn’t close. When a team is scoring in bunches and the goalie change happens, you’re basically watching the market try to keep up.

NHL Game Recaps

Carolina Hurricanes vs Washington Capitals Recap: Capitals wins 4-3

Justin Sourdif scored the winner at 1:42 of overtime as Washington erased an early three-goal deficit to beat Carolina 4-3. Jakob Chychrun tied it with a wrist shot from the high slot with 6:42 left, and Hendrix Lapierre and Dylan Strome also scored while Aliaksei Protas had two assists.

Carolina led 3-0 by the 4:16 mark of the second period on goals by Mark Jankowski, Sebastian Aho and Shayne Gostisbehere, then watched the game slip away. Washington had to use Clay Stevenson in an emergency start with Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren injured, and he made 19 saves while the comeback built. Frederik Andersen stopped 38 for Carolina, but the Hurricanes couldn’t close after building that early cushion.

Colorado Avalanche vs Detroit Red Wings Recap: Avalanche wins 5-0

Nathan MacKinnon scored two goals to become the first NHL player to reach 40 as Colorado shut out Detroit 5-0. MacKinnon added an assist, Mackenzie Blackwood made 28 saves for his third shutout of the season, and Ross Colton, Brent Burns and Parker Kelly also scored.

This was a clean blowout script. Detroit got 13 saves from John Gibson before he was replaced by Cam Talbot after two periods, and Colorado never let the game turn into anything else once it had control.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Vancouver Canucks Recap: Maple Leafs wins 3-2 (SO)

Toronto snapped a six-game losing streak with a shootout win over Vancouver. Auston Matthews scored the deciding shootout goal after missing a penalty shot in overtime and added an assist in regulation, while William Nylander scored in the shootout in his return after missing seven games with a groin injury.

Max Domi tied it in the third to extend his point streak to five, Nicolas Roy also scored, and Joseph Woll made 28 saves. For Vancouver, Jonathan Lekkerimaki and Tom Willander scored, and Nikita Tolopilo kept the Canucks in it with 39 saves, but the shootout finished it.

New York Rangers vs Pittsburgh Penguins Recap: Penguins wins 6-5

Anthony Mantha and Noel Acciari scored two goals each as Pittsburgh held on to beat the Rangers 6-5. Rickard Rakell had a goal and an assist, Ben Kindel scored, and Stuart Skinner made 15 saves as the Penguins won their sixth straight.

New York got a big night from Alexis Lafreniere with two goals and an assist, while Vincent Trocheck had a goal and two assists and Vladislav Gabrikov added a goal and an assist. This was a high-event game where the margin was basically who could survive the last stretch.

Dallas Stars vs Utah Mammoth Recap: Stars wins 3-2

Dallas scored three times in the first period and held on to beat Utah 3-2 in Salt Lake City, despite Kailer Yamamoto scoring both Mammoth goals. Thomas Harley and Wyatt Johnston scored power-play goals, and Jamie Benn added two assists as the Stars won their fourth straight.

Utah kept pushing behind two assists from JJ Peterka and 29 saves from Karel Vejmelka, but the early hole decided the script. Casey DeSmith made 12 saves for Dallas to earn his first win since Jan. 7.

Los Angeles Kings vs Philadelphia Flyers Recap: Kings wins 3-2 (OT)

Quinton Byfield scored at 2:48 of overtime as the Kings beat Philadelphia 3-2. Byfield finished a one-timer off a pass from Adrian Kempe, with Drew Doughty earning a secondary assist for his 700th career point.

Kempe had two goals and an assist to extend his point streak to six games, Corey Perry had two assists, and Darcy Kuemper made 19 saves as Los Angeles won four of five. Travis Konecny had a goal and an assist for Philly, Trevor Zegras also scored, and the Flyers’ slide continued, now 11 losses in 13 games (2-8-3).

San Jose Sharks vs Calgary Flames Recap: Flames wins 3-2

Joel Farabee scored a tiebreaking short-handed goal in the third as Calgary beat San Jose 3-2 to snap a five-game losing streak. Morgan Frost had a power-play goal and an assist, Matvei Gridin also scored, and Dustin Wolf made 23 saves.

San Jose got a power-play goal from Will Smith and another from Adam Gaudette, and Alex Nedeljkovic made 39 saves, but the short-handed strike was the separating play. Calgary got just its fourth win of January, so this one mattered.

Winnipeg Jets vs Florida Panthers Recap: Jets wins 2-1

Cole Perfetti and Marc Scheifele scored third-period goals as Winnipeg rallied to beat Florida 2-1. Eric Comrie made 27 saves and earned his third straight win as a starter.

Florida’s only goal came in the first period from Eetu Luostarinen, and the Panthers dropped their third straight after previously winning three in a row. Winnipeg entered with just two wins in seven, so the third-period push was a notable response.

Nashville Predators vs New York Islanders Recap: Predators wins 4-3

Roman Josi scored the game-winner coast-to-coast with 1:14 left as Nashville rallied from an early two-goal deficit to beat the Islanders 4-3. Filip Forsberg scored twice and Matthew Wood also scored, while Juuse Saros made 27 saves, including two big stops in the final 14 seconds.

New York got goals from Matthew Schaefer, Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Mathew Barzal, and Ilya Sorokin made 38 saves. But Nashville’s late push and Josi’s finish decided it, and the Predators snapped a three-game losing streak.

Montreal Canadiens vs Buffalo Sabres Recap: Canadiens wins 4-2

Cole Caufield scored two third-period goals and Jakub Dobes made 36 saves as Montreal beat Buffalo 4-2 on the road, snapping the Sabres’ five-game win streak. Juraj Slafkovsky and Oliver Kapanen also scored as the Canadiens erased a 2-1 deficit entering the third.

Buffalo got goals from Owen Power and Noah Ostlund, and Alex Lyon’s franchise-record 10-game win streak ended despite 27 saves. The betting takeaway is the third period, Montreal flipped the game when it mattered.

Columbus Blue Jackets vs St. Louis Blues Recap: Blue Jackets wins 5-3

Kent Johnson had a goal and an assist as Columbus beat St. Louis 5-3 for its fifth straight win. Isac Lundestrom, Denton Mateychuk, Damon Severson and Mason Marchment also scored, and Jet Greaves made 28 saves to improve to 4-0-0 in his career vs the Blues.

St. Louis got a goal and an assist each from Jonatan Berggren and Jimmy Snuggerud, plus a goal from Tyler Tucker and two assists from Brayden Schenn. But the Blues dropped their sixth in seven, and Columbus’ current run is now nine wins in its last 10.

New Jersey Devils vs Ottawa Senators Recap: Senators wins 4-1

Dylan Cozens scored his 100th career goal and Linus Ullmark made 26 saves in his first action in more than a month as Ottawa beat New Jersey 4-1. Brady Tkachuk had a goal and two assists, Tim Stutzle scored his team-leading 25th, and Shane Pinto added an empty-netter.

Timo Meier scored the only Devils goal, his 14th, and Dougie Hamilton’s 10-game point streak ended. For bettors, the key is Ullmark returning and looking stable right away.

Seattle Kraken vs Vegas Golden Knights Recap: Kraken wins 3-2

Kaapo Kakko scored the go-ahead goal in the third as Seattle beat Vegas 3-2 at T-Mobile Arena. Joey Daccord made 27 saves, Eeli Tolvanen and Jared McCann also scored, and Chandler Stephenson had two assists as the Kraken won their fourth straight.

Seattle moved within three points of Vegas and Edmonton for first in the Pacific Division, and it was only the second win in team history in that building. For Vegas, Ivan Barbashev and Mitch Marner scored, Jack Eichel had two assists, and the Golden Knights dropped their fourth straight and sixth in seven.

Minnesota Wild vs Edmonton Oilers Recap: Wild wins 7-3

Minnesota crushed Edmonton 7-3 to complete a sweep of the season series. Joel Eriksson Ek, Mats Zuccarello, Quinn Hughes and Brock Faber each had a goal and an assist, and Kirill Kaprizov, Vladimir Tarasenko and Tyler Pitlick also scored as the Wild won their third straight.

Edmonton got goals from Leon Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jack Roslovic, but the game got away when the Wild kept stacking goals. Jesper Wallstedt made 39 saves, and Edmonton replaced Tristan Jarry after 15 shots with Connor Ingram in relief.
