Romania’s Sorana Cirstea pulled off one of the biggest wins of the week by defeating top seed Liudmila Samsonova 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Cirstea delivered seven aces, saved the only break point she faced, and won 78.1 percent of her first-serve points (25 of 32). The straight-sets victory sends her into the semifinals against Russia’s Anastasia Zakharova, who advanced via walkover after Germany’s Eva Lys withdrew.

  • Elsa Jacquemot (France) edged Solana Sierra (Argentina) 7-5, 7-6 (2).

In Monterrey, Russia’s Diana Shnaider survived a marathon three-hour battle to knock out No. 5 seed Elise Mertens of Belgium 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4).

Mertens struck 10 aces and held five match points, but Shnaider refused to yield. She erased three consecutive match points while trailing 5-3 in the final set, then fended off another before surging through a decisive tiebreaker.
