Monterrey Open: Ruzic, Parks, and Sramkova Cruise

Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic delivered one of the early shocks at the Monterrey Open, beating No. 8 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-6 (4), 6-1 in the first round. Despite firing six aces, Pavlyuchenkova’s eight double faults swung momentum to Ruzic, who saved the only break point she faced. Ruzic now meets Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who handled France’s Leolia Jeanjean 6-3, 6-4.

Alycia Parks also advanced in dominant fashion, needing just 61 minutes to take down Spain’s Cristina Bucsa 6-2, 6-1. Parks sets up a second-round clash against No. 1 seed Emma Navarro in an all-American battle. Meanwhile, Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova overwhelmed Mexico’s Victoria Rodriguez 6-0, 6-3 in under an hour.

Three matches were left pending, highlighted by Czech No. 6 seed Linda Noskova facing New Zealand’s Lulu Sun.

Tennis in the Land: Zakharova Benefits From Upset & Walkover

In Cleveland, Russia’s Anastasia Zakharova reached her first-ever WTA Tour semifinal after a straight-sets win and a fortunate withdrawal. Zakharova beat No. 8 seed Hailey Baptiste 6-4, 6-3 in the Round of 16, winning nearly 72 percent of her first-service points.

Later in the evening, she advanced again when Germany’s Eva Lys, who had earlier eliminated Polina Kudermetova, withdrew from the event. That pushed Zakharova into the semifinals without having to play a quarterfinal match.

Baptiste’s exit continued a tough trend for seeded players in Cleveland, with the third, fifth, sixth, and seventh seeds all bowing out in the opening round.
