Cincinnati Open – Alcaraz Takes the Crown
Carlos Alcaraz claimed the Cincinnati Open title on Monday, but not in the way anyone expected. Top seed Jannik Sinner was visibly ill from the start, struggling in the heat before retiring down 0-5 in just 23 minutes.
Alcaraz looked sharp in the brief time they shared on court, winning 21 of 29 points while Sinner committed nine unforced errors. Still, the Spaniard was quick to acknowledge that this wasn’t the way he wanted to secure the trophy.
“This is not the way I want to win,” Alcaraz told the crowd, before turning to Sinner. “You’re a great champion. I know you’ll come back stronger.”
At just 22 years old, Alcaraz is now the youngest men’s champion in Cincinnati since Andy Murray in 2008. The Spaniard has been on a roll, winning five of his last seven tournaments, including a French Open classic over Sinner. With the U.S. Open just days away, both players remain favorites for a deep run.
